    This is a great video in that we had a greyhound once upon a time that would sleep with her eyes almost half open so you didn't know if she was awake or asleep. Thanks once again for a valuable public service!

    Magnus is just so cude ❤who could resist these Eyes....thanks for the sleep startle part...my lovely Boy Balou is here for 5 Weeks now and for him its a big issue, he is allowed on the Couch and once in a while he will growl at me when waking up.....but he is getting much better...i was very worried about going out for work....never mind....within two weeks he was so House clean and secure that he stays alone for 7 Hours and doesn't mess up anything or bark or howls...i am so impressed and in Love with Greyhounds...just the best Pets ❤❤❤

      Puppy may startle for a long time. They sleep REALLY hard and are a bit shocked when they wake up. I just remember it's not personal.

    Thank you very much for sharing your Beautiful Greyhounds. I recently rescued a Borzoi, and while not the same dog, very similar in behavior. Your videos have helped me immensely to bridge the gap with a needy, neglected hound. I am immensly grateful to you, your wife, Magnus, and Scout, you have helped me in a dark time when I wanted to help a dog and not give up, but also cried tears every night. I have a better relationship with my Borzoi today following you and Magnus. I still keep hope that I will be lucky to get my Borzoi a rescue Greyhound brother or sister. Keep up the great work!!!!You are loved. I only wish Virginia, USA has such a rescue club as your local one someday.

      Glad you found the videos helpful. that is great to hear. We had a tough time with Magnus when we first brought him home. we had lots of issues to deal with. But you get past those tough moments and before you know it you forget all the drama and just enjoy your new companions. Magnus is a great communicator now and it is easy to know what he is after.

    Hello. Wonderful presentation. I never had any problems with sleep startle, but then I never did any of the things you mention not to do. I don't like being startled awake, so I don't do it to anyone else including my pets. You always give sound information. Magnus looked so funny as he watched Scout carry off a shoe. I had to chuckle to myself. Love to Scout and Magnus. Greyhounds are so very sweet and gentle. Thanks for telling the world what greyt pets they make. Virginia Denney in Ohio

    My Timmy had terrible sleep startle when he first came to me. It took a couple of months for him to settle. He had come from a very difficult background, so understandably, it was a tougher adjustment for him. Great advice to anyone with a hound. Love your videos & the shoe thief is hilarious! Just wanted to say that I've really enjoyed your videos. I'm from the Midlands in the UK and 6 weeks ago we adopted our own greyhound Sully aged 3.5 years. I've been able to understand some of his behaviours better from watching your videos and after some trials our whole family loves Sully. We have some work to do as you would expect, he has some reaction to smaller dogs when out walking, but mainly to dogs that are off lead and run up to him. His recall is rubbish, but that's no surprise. He isn't interested in sofas or upstairs, but loves to sleep on the rug next to me while I'm working. He's finally stopped growling when we lie next to him to pet him (perseverance on our part) and his sleep startle is minimal, but he does growl a lot in his sleep which is quite amusing. He happily stays home alone if needed and sleeps through the night with no issues and is completely clean in the house. I've considered doing some videos of my own, but I think you've about covered it! :-) Good job guys.

      @@magnusgreyhound Hi, sorry I'm late. Although I'm wondering how do you test out if they have sleep startle? Would the rescue center know and have tested this out? I obviously don't want to disturb a sleeping dog, although I want to be able to walk past without losing a foot lol. I also don't want to test it out as I want to prevent losing a finger 🤣. I've reserved a greyhound named Grace and hopefully soon she'll be coming home for her two week trial, if all goes well she's mine to adopt 🤞🏽. I think this is one of my biggest fears and I'm looking as much advice I can get :).

    I learned this ........ We had a Lurcher pup {from RSPCA} who had health issues from neglect even at 12 weeks.
    Anyway, she was asleep on the sofa, and I leaned over her to get a book off the bookcase...and stopped to kiss her snout as it was on the sofa arm.... She awoke immediately and ''snapped'' the air, it clearly alarmed her, it was absolutely a reflex....
    I never did anything so silly again.
    First time dog owners, newly adopted, she didn't know us well yet.
    She was a ''Soul mate'', but probably took a few months to really 'bond' and become less aloof...She was never a ''cuddly'' dog, but happy to lie next to you on her terms. She died aged 12, {A kindly vet came to our house } after being a superb companion. 💕 I was heartbroken.
    Edit : She adored shoes and socks too but never damaged them. Would run off and take any visitors shoe..only one...and hide it.

    My second greyhound came with sleep startle. Something I had heard of but never experienced despite having had many many dogs. It was quite scary the first few times he woke with a start which could have just been by another of my dogs waking past him. He would air snap or bark or growl. I researched it and although the other four sleep in the bedroom his bed was put in the hall. He liked this. It was out out of the way so you didn't have to step over him.
    I learnt that it can be improved or stop all together if the dog is reassured he is safe each time he wakes. The suggestions were for you to touch his foot to get him used to touch while not being threatened by anyone standing over him etc ie touching him from a distance. Also touch him with soft toys so he wakes with his favourite toy with him. But no sign of you etc. And calling their name to wake them up. It worked. Mostly he wakes happy and relaxed. Occasionally he yelps if another dog has woken him. He got over most of his sleep startle within a few weeks and I've had him five months now and it's all bit gone. However I do not forget and give him space. Now he wants to sleep in the bedroom 😊

    I never ever saw myself as a greyhound man until I saw my girl Banjo at a local shelter. After going through all the usual checks we adopted her and has become the queen of the house, she's a retired racer and came with some psychological baggage but there are workarounds and she's really doing fine. The dog's a thief to the tune of eight pork chops, one Kg. belly of pork, two fillet steaks, and a sirloin steak, all our own fault bless her. Fortunately, we like beans on toast as the dog slept digesting our dinners. Barbed wire fencing is now the order of the day when meat is left to thaw.

    Hey
    We have a dog named Happy and he is about to be 1 year old. He is generally a loving and playful pup and recently he started a new behaviour of growling after waking up from sleep. One time after he woke up in the middle of the sleep and he tried to snap at me because I was very close to him and then after coming back to reality he then licked me and then he was normal...but lately this behaviour has increased a lot.. Even though he himself gets up from the sleep and he will be wagging his tail if I try to pet him he is growing and chasing me to bite and after few hours he comes and acts normally. The frequency of the behaviour is increasing and it's really getting scary . He does this to me and my mom.. we are the ones who generally feed him play with him etc while he is growing my dad comes and stops him ..he then becomes silent and he will stop his behaviour. Can you please help us with this

    • @magnusgreyhound
      @magnusgreyhound  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Unfortunately, there is no cure or fix for sleep startle. You need to give your dog space when it is sleeping. This can be hard as some dogs sleep with their eyes open (Magnus does this at times). It is best to give them their own sleeping space and not on a human bed. Also it is best to call their name and get them to react to you before approaching that way they have time to wake up and not get startled. Glad the video helped. I had seen a few comments on various facebook group about people getting frights from their pups being startled, so i though I would make the videos to highlight it so people can know how to interact with a pup who suffers from sleep startle. It can be challenging learn to live with some greyhound behaviours so no need to feel like a bad dog mum.

    Mine suffers very badly from this, your not wrong about them looking awake and not being so. None of my previous ones have had it so it was a bit of a shock, special with the growling and snapping (also biting on occasion). I'll try some of your tips, thanks!

      Although they are fast, they do not need much walking. they do like to run; but it only lasts a couple of minutes then it is back to napping.

      @@oxcart4172 Greyhounds don't live in harsh conditions. They have very clean, comfortable crates or pens to sleep and eat in. They are regularly exercised and walked and get plenty of play/potty time every day. They are groomed and checked by kennel Vets all the time. They are loved by their handlers. They love to race, to chase the lure. It's a fun game for them.

      Do you have a crate or dedicated dog bed space?

    • @Wallaceandi
      @Wallaceandi ปีที่แล้ว

      @magnusgreyhound the shelter said he didn't do well in a crate and I really needed a dog for security and feeling safe so I feel that might make my anxiety worse. I bought dog beds etc. Even if I try making my bed he gets on it and won't move. If I try to move him he growls.

    • @Wallaceandi
      @Wallaceandi ปีที่แล้ว

      @magnusgreyhound he's fine on the couch if I touch him etc.

    • @magnusgreyhound
      @magnusgreyhound  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a bit of resource guarding as well. You may have to bribe him to go to his bed, rather than yours. There is a training technique where you drop small treats on there bed to make them go there. You then drop a treat every 10 seconds then spread it out to every 20 and then 30 then you build up to every minute. The idea is to make the dog want to go to there bed as that is were the good stuff happens. We used a crate with Magnus and had it all cushy for him. We did not shut the door as he did not like it but he had his place to go out of the way of any disturbances. It worked for Magnus. Now we no longer use the crate and Magnus has his bed on the floor next to our bed and he is no longer reactive. Hope this helps
