I had some hawker just put a pamphlet in my hand.. so I took it and walked off. He tried to say "you gotta pay for that"
And I just walked on and said "no thanks" kept it, and then said "if there's a problem, then the cops can help us sort this out".

Guy: You gotta pay for that pamphlet.
Me: You mean MY pamphlet? Why would I pay you for my pamphlet? It's already mine.
Guy: I stuck it in your hand. If you're going to be that way I want it back.

    History of the Chinese Theater...
Back in the 20s, theaters were built with themes. Before the Chinese Theater was built, there was another theater that was built with an Egyptian theme to it. With the success of having themed theaters, they built more to entice patrons. As for the hand and shoe prints on the cement, it all started as an accident. The theater’s builder Sid Grauman accidentally stepped on some soft cement and gave him the idea of having movie stars to the same thing and sign their names on the soft cement. The Chinese Theater got so popular that they made it to be the spot to premiere the new movies coming out back in the golden age of hollywood.
Hollywood is definitely a weird place...and I live here in LA lol...but we accept its weirdness because it’s just unique. A lot of us here take it for granted tho. We see all these tourists flocking to Hollywood, Venice Beach, Disneyland, etc etc...probably saved up the money they used for a long time to go on these vacation trips and we’re here like “meh...there’s Hollywood Blvd...there’s Disneyland...there’s the Hollywood Sign...etc etc” as we pass them by in our cars or whatever form of transportation we’re on.
As for you dancing in front of the Chinese Theater, that...was...awesome!!!
I vote for more Diane dancing footage

I know what you mean about people saving their money for a "meh" style trip. I grew up outside of D.C. and would hang at Georgetown U. when my older sibs. were students there. The Smithsonian is a revolving tourist trap, although with a little panache, courtesy of it's kitschy gift shops and overpriced cafe's. The rest is : here's the Capital where they rip us off and go home with a clear conscious, etc., etc. Meh indeed.

As Oscar Levant once said : "Strip away the phony tinsel of Hollywood and you find the real tinsel". Practically the entire industry is put together like a giant Potemkin village. If you ever get a backstage tour of TV network, you'd be amazed at how much of those great looking sets are just knocked together 2x4s with a fancy side facing the camera.

Good points, Diane. I learned an important lesson on Hollywood Blvd. My nephew and niece wanted to take a picture next to the guy dressed up like Batman. I knew that these cosplay entertainers (and living statues) will get angry if you take a picture of them without paying them. So, I walked up first with my nephew and placed $30 (a $20 bill and a $10 bill) into his tip container (an empty guitar case). He gladly took a photo with my nephew. Next, my niece stood next to him. He then began to yell at me about paying him again. I told him that I already tipped him $30. He yelled even louder. In an almost threatening tone, he told me, "You better not take that picture." Needless to say, my niece didn't get a pic with Batman. Ironically, the other people (before and after us) were tipping him with $1 bills.

Not only is there is there a Chinese theater on Hollywood Blvd. but there used to be an Egyptian theater right next to it. I think it's the whole "Hollywood is a dream factory and we can make movies pretending we are any damn place we want to be in the whole wide world" thingie. And yeah, you made a good call going to California rather than the Carolinas, it's been too damn hot here of late, highs hovering around 35 C last few weeks, do NOT come to the American South in the summer dear, you will burst into flame. Also, been meaning to tell you, I KNEW you would have a great trip, just before you left suddenly on the shelf of my local grocery store they started stocking Kerry Gold Irish butter, and it was on SALE> I took it as a sign and bought some in your honor, as a good luck token for your trip. Ta!

Hi Diane, some comments from good old la-la-land. Firstly, the Chinese Theatre: it went up during a period when it was fashionable to construct theatres in "foreign" styles. In fact, you could have walked ten minutes east on Hollywood Boulevard and located the Egyptian Theatre, home to the American Cinematheque. There were many more theatres built in downtown L.A. that are now being resurrected after years of neglect. The pee smell: yes, sadly that is omnipresent in many parts of L.A.--a symptom of the enormous homeless problem we have here. And regarding selfies at the Hollywood sign: this was actually a big issue for the locals who live in the hills near the sign--the places where the tourists were going up in droves to take their sign-selfies. It came to a head a few years ago, and now the tourists are pretty much not welcome up there any more. A bit sad, but understandable.

I lived in Hollywood in 1968-for a week. It was trashy and plastic back then. After the conclusion of that sortie, I high-tailed it back to the Haight in San Francisco-which was a little less trashy (from a delusional perspective, I guess) and eventually ended up in Far Northern California, feeling a bit nauseous and burnt out with knowing that I’d been duped into spending any quality time in either of those cities.

Another fun video :-) I am glad you had a good time in Hollywood. Most everyone I have known who has visited there had no plans of ever going back. Who was the star you were dancing on? As far as the Walk of Fame goes, those celebs have to pay $30,000 USD to get their name there.

Just remember, the theatre opened in 1927. Practically everything you see around it today, simply wasn't there back then. There were some other buildings nearby, but for the most part, it stood there on its own, basking in its own glory. :)

Honestly I think the reason you can use a true penny is a legal think and how petty some legal stuff is. And those are static, the owner probably checks once a month, grabs 20 bucks or what not and has 50 of them :) Great video. Chicago next?

  • @depley61
    @depley61 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Most of what you call coin flatteners you put in 3 coins (2 quarters and 1 penny). It squashes the penny with a design on it and keeps the quarters so the machine owner makes 50 cents for each. Really good return on investment since there is almost no maintenance to do and the person has to actually do the work of turning the handle themselves.
Just like everywhere else in the world, all tourist stuff is an enormous rip off.

Was there a comic con going on nearby? I believe there was an anime convention going on in LA at the time, which would explain why there were so many folks in costume in the area. They do it to “freak out the mundanes” - fannish slang for people who aren’t part of their scene.

Since I live in LA, when ever I have out-of-towners visit, they want to see the Chinese Theater among other land mark tourist attractions, and I rarely see hand and foot prints belonging to people I do not know. Even the ones you pointed out I knew. That may be because I am a lot older than you? And I like old movies.
