    Hi everyone! I just wanted to give an update today (07/04/2024) on how the pantry has been working out since it has been about 1.5 years since the renovation and organization.
    First a little information on the pantry.. The closet area that was renovated into a pantry is 47" wide and the shelving is Billy bookcases from Ikea. I chose Ikea bookcases because I wanted to mimic the modular shelving found in larger pantries, but due to the size, I could not find a custom pantry company in my area that offered shelving builds in a pantry space this small (under 48"). Since I decided to DIY the shelving, I had to take into consideration the weight that the shelving could hold and place pantry items accordingly. The modular shelving is only 10.5" deep and the shelving height was adjusted to fit the ingredients (some shelves are less than 9" or 6" tall). More shelving was added as necessary allowing it to hold many ingredients for its size.
    Question: Are the containers keeping the ingredients fresh? I'm happy to say they kept my ingredients airtight and moisture free!^^ I do want to note it's important to understand your climate where you live when planning to buy new containers. We don't live in a humid area and during the rainy months we run a dehumidifier. Dry ingredients will last a long time without absorbing moisture and becoming rancid here.
    Next question: Is the pantry hard to maintain? I had purchased a few containers to test decanting items before I did my pantry renovation, so I had a good idea on whether this would work for me. It has become MUCH easier overall to maintain the pantry with decanted items. I did a lot of research to make sure that the container sizes were equivalent to most of my ingredients, so they could be fully decanted. I don't have to refill containers often and it's very easy to wash a container here and there to refill items when they are empty (I show this in some of my recent vlogs). It's easier to find items, so they get used up while fresh. There are less messes and spills without bags/boxes. It's also easier to open and measure ingredients from the glass containers. I'm able to "shop my pantry" instead of making as many trips to the grocery store. I also get cooking inspiration just by opening the pantry door which takes a huge mental load off deciding what to cook. Everything is functional, practical and works exceptionally well with my cooking habits.
    In my childhood home and previous homes/ college apartments, I did not have a designated pantry (I used cabinet space), so from experience, I know these organization concepts work in cabinets too. Just be creative with your space as everyone's space is different. This is actually my first time having a pantry, and I'm so thankful and happy with the result. Thank you for watching and I hope this answers some common questions! ❤
    Other things to mention..
    I had a little more food on hand than usual due to various reasons (not hosting holidays I usually do/not being able to cook for family as much) which made the pantry organization even more beneficial. All items in the main pantry are meant for long term storage.
    Another note: I keep my Korean red pepper powder in the fridge instead of the pantry now.

      I'm happy you liked the video! ☺Mason jars are a wonderful idea! I considered them for a while and I had also saved up quite a few jars that I washed and planned to reuse. Unfortunately, I have issues with my hands that prevented me from using them for most of my ingredients. I have nerve pain and swelling that can get irritated easily by gripping and twisting lids often. So between sauce bottles and pantry items, that would be a lot of lid twisting haha I agree though, the bamboo containers are probably not as air tight, but they are more accessible for me to use on a daily basis. I'm happy that I haven't noticed any ingredient spoilage in the year since the pantry has been organized though. We do run a dehumidifier in the rainy months which probably helps. Thank you so much for watching and subscribing! I look forward to seeing you again! ❤

    Cute video - I need to look into making powdered sugar now! You can make your own brown sugar as well. I do this when I only need small quantities and don't have any on hand - you just need about 1Tbsp molasses for every 1cup of granulated sugar (up the molasses to make it dark brown).

I had been planning my pantry organization for several months until it worked it’s way into the budget haha I slowly bought containers and it did cost a bit of money but for my cooking habits it is 100% worth it for me. So if you count all the preparations, it definitely took many days 😂 Everything has a place and a space now, so I save so much time and energy when cooking. I think it might be getting close to paying for itself at this point since the amount of dining out we do is significantly decreased. I still think to myself “why didn’t I do this sooner?” 😂 It’s made cooking much more enjoyable ☺️ And I definitely opened it to look at it more than once after it was organized 😂 The gloves are by Playtex by the way! Hello, I loved your video! Great tips and inspiration for organising, thank you so much!
    I was wondering, after you vacuum seal the bags of spices and flours and put them in the freezer, how do you use them later, when you need it? Do you take them out the night before and let it "defreeze" (I don't know the right word) or can you use them straight away? Thank you in advance!

    • @lifebymelaniee
      @lifebymelaniee  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, thank you so much for watching! ☺️
      For any powders like flour or seasonings, you can use them right away! They will just feel cool to the touch, but they won’t clump since there’s no moisture. When I want to refill a canister with them, I remove the outer vacuum seal bag and let it come to room temperature. This makes sure that the cold powder won’t cause any condensation in the container I decant them into and get damp. Hope this helps! Have a nice day ❤️

Buona giornata.

    Nice job making things look 🎉nice. However, this is not really mainly about organizing a small pantry space. To be able to store such a vast variety of ingredients indicates that your space isn't at all small. The very idea of a small pantry is that it stores mostly basic essentials in an organized way. A small pantry will hold like 2 boxes of pasta, not 10😆It's fine that you are able to afford and store so much, but just don't title your video "small" pantry. Your video is really art for the kitchen, but not necessarily relatable as most people don't store hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of food/ingredients all at once. Additionally you are having to freeze many items since it can't fit in the pantry. Freezing is not pantry storage. You indeed have to freeze since no one person, or even a family, could possibly use all of those ingredients within a reasonable time before they go rancid. Just be aware of how you're marketing your video. It's nice to watch, but totally unrealistic as a small pantry and should be described accordingly. This pantry and is vast and varied and an appropriate title would be something like "Luxurious pantry stock organization." Just sayin'.....😂

    • @lifebymelaniee
      @lifebymelaniee  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi, thank you for your thoughtful comment ☺️ I suppose any adjectives are relative based off individual experience and surroundings. The space itself in this video was actually an old broom closet that is only 47” wide that I converted into a pantry. Where I live, my pantry would be considered small. The shelving added a ton of workable space making it look much bigger and allowing me to store many more items than before. The organizational ideas in this video can be scaled up or down to fit most pantry sizes. I had to use my imagination to make use of my individual space as it’s important to do so, since everyone will have different food preferences, space/pantry layout/cabinet storage. I understand that everyone does not cook the way I do (it’s a passion and a hobby for me) and I’m thankful to have jobs that allow me to afford food to cook for the ones I love. There are many ways to show appreciation and this is just how I show it to my loved ones. If I cooked a single cuisine and I wouldn’t have near as many types of ingredients in my pantry either and I would just repurchase more frequently. In the past years, I’ve been trying to improve my culinary skills and I like to try a lot of new things that I don’t always repurchase. I will consider what you’re saying and put thought into the title at some point when I have time (I work during the week and I’m replying on my very short lunch break so excuse any typos haha) I do think that utilizing freezer space is a great idea for people with small pantries though. Understanding/knowing how to freeze bulk items is important if you are trying to save on costs, prevent spoilage, or free up space. I’m also given foods to try from friends and family or if they have an excess of food they send it my way and vice versa (which is why I had a lot of flour last year when I made this video haha). I also purchase certain foods with the intention of prepping and freezing for easy use when I’m busy or my health is bad. I host most holidays and cook a lot for friends and family and I do not live alone, so all the food is shared and enjoyed without waste. Thank you for watching!

      Too much processed food and packed food stuff. Not realistic even for a family of 4 to 6 people. Even if you enjoy cooking and hosting you can't buy and store food products like a supermarket. I believe in buying lesser items and use ingredients fresh (within 10 days maximum)
      Any way u have organized all the things in pretty containers and bins but I am sure it's difficult to remember and locate all the items when needed. So better to buy food products in smaller quantities and organize them. It will be more efficient in managing the pantry and aesthetically pleasing to the eyes .

    • @lifebymelaniee
      @lifebymelaniee  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@silvyzachariah1221 I can understand your outlook on food storage. I can appreciate a household who cooks daily and has a fully stocked pantry and I can also appreciate a household who doesn’t cook a variety of foods and stores very little at a time. Everyone is different ☺️ If you watch the video through, you will notice that a very small percentage of the food is processed/snack packaged food. I mentioned that I had a lot of granola bars at the time because I had nausea and was cooking less than usual. A year later, we have even less snacks because I’m learning how to cook more foods that I enjoy and feel more satisfied between meals. I’m not planning on giving up my ramen any time soon though 😂 I mentioned that I unexpectedly didn’t host the holidays last winter which is why I had so much flour (my bf’s mom also gave me her 2 bags as well because I usually make all the bread rolls, cinnamon rolls, pie crust etc). The other types of flours are typically used in one go (for example wheat starch for har gow or glutinous rice flour for sesame sweet rice balls Chinese New Year). The gluten free flours were for specific dietary needs. I cook in phases (for example I will cook a certain food group for a couple weeks to supplement the fresh ingredients when shopping different at different markets for different cuisines), and I have food vlogs that provide insight of how I cook and buy food. The ingredients in my pantry are constantly changing as I learn new recipes, so I’m considering not restocking the Hispanic food section again after I use it up this time because I have other cuisines that I’ve been cooking more. Inevitably when you cook multiple cuisines, you will have extra ingredients leftover that need to be properly stored until used again. Most of the items stored in my pantry are meant for long term food storage. Whether they are sitting in a supermarket or my pantry, the expiration date and the freshness doesn’t change. I bought the pasta on sale at two different locations. I won’t be repurchasing the ALDIs brand though. My preferred pasta is more expensive, so I usually stock up on it when it’s on sale. Everything is quite easy to see at a glance. The shelves are shallow, and I don’t store many items behind each other. All in all, I had more food than usual in my pantry when I organized it between multiple missed holidays and flying to visit my parents, but with conscientious effort, there is no food waste. My childhood home is in the countryside and my mom cooked every meal everyday of the week and she also kept a fully stocked pantry. When I drive 16 hours to see my family, I take a ton of food back to my parent’s house with me and cook for my family the duration of my stay. I want them to try the new dishes I learn and there are several ingredients that are not available where they live. Once, I’ve cooked and experienced more foods, I’m sure I will settle into more of a routine and my cooking habits might change. Right now I’m learning a lot of new foods (that I don’t always repurchase) and different culinary skills. I have to be up for work in a few hours, so I’ll end here, but feel free to ask questions. I hope you can feel at ease knowing that the food you see is shopped, prepared, and enjoyed responsibly. Thank you for watching 😊

The captions should be showing up in English, so if they are showing up in a different language, I would recommend adjusting them to your preferred language in the settings. There were a few instances where I put the ingredient name in both English and it’s language of origin. Decanted items are beautiful, and I'm sure you know everything by sight, but it would be nice to see labels on the jars for similar looking items.

      Hi, thank you for watching! ☺️ Yes, I do know them by sight but I have a labeling system as well just in case I forget anything (which is definitely possible 😉), expiration dates, and to remember which brands I previously bought. If you would like to check out the labeling system, I explain it and show the labels at the end of the video. This was a large project and unfortunately I didn’t have time to show printing them and sticking them on the jars. Thanks again for watching and I hope you have a nice day ❤️

    Watching on my phone. Your font is too small and doesnt contrast the content enough.

      Thanks for the heads up! I’ll keep that in mind for my next video that’s coming out soon :) Another way to view the captions is by clicking on the “CC” for closed captions. I upload caption tracks for translations and they show up much larger with a dark grey background! Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

      Hahaha Ummmmmm I think she means the font on your canisters!! I don’t think you can decide on the captions each person uses on their computer only they can do that. ???? But I could be wrong ! I just know I always do my own captions. 💖 good video, but the noise of the contents when you were putting things in the baskets was a little too loud😱😱😱

      @@yellowtulip4105 Thank you for watching ☺️ As everyone cooks differently, each person should organize their pantry in a way that best suites their cooking style. I had more food on hand than I typically would due to various reasons, but because of how efficient the organization was in the pantry, I was able to see and use all of the food with ease. I show a little of the maintenance, use when cooking, and restocking throughout my other vlogs. I find using my pantry much more practical and efficient now. I can keep trying new foods and recipes easily ☺️ Have a nice day!

      @@yellowtulip4105 I completely agree with you ☺️ I enjoy cooking so much more now because everything can been seen at a glance and the maintenance is very easy. I only decant items that don’t require constant refilling (so no snack items or single use items) which makes it’s very low maintenance (only a couple jars to be washed every other few weeks). If I would have known how much easier cooking would be, I wouldn’t have waited so long to renovate! I’m very grateful as it has reduced a lot of stress for me. I do wish I was a little taller to reach the bins on top easier. They contain extra pastas that I bought on sale or extra salt for cleaning and pickling, so I don’t use them too often at least. If I ever get tired of trying new cuisines and have jars I no longer use, I’d love to take the extra containers and help organize my mom’s pantry, because I know she would love it too☺️ I’m posting a new video that will show a current version of the pantry soon ❤️
