In my opinion Casino is one of those rare movies where it was based on a true story, remains fairly factual, and is very entertaining all at the same time. A great work from one of the greatest directors of all time and will forever be one of the best films of all time.
Right! Scorsese kinda down played some things.
It's based on true events, not a true story. They took events that happened and edited them for a movie as opposed to telling the entire story as is.
Masterpiece, the best movie ever made about Las Vegas, the scene where Pesci and his brother get taken out is one of the most disturbing scenes in film history, extremely powerful.
And extremely deserved
Richard Bay true lol the fact that it’s his own crew who he’s lorded over the entire film just makes it disturbing, especially how they force him to watch his brother get beaten to death before he gets the same.

It was a masterpiece and continues to be one of my favorite all time movies! every couple of years, I will take it out and watch it again !! Never get sick of it !!

My brother lived in Vegas from 1978 to 1985. So he basically "saw the movie" even before the movie came out.😄

No denying what a great movie it is, it's almost tragic how many millions of people who loved the movie but will never watch it or anything with Deniro ever again. What percentage of the people who made Deniro super-wealthy were Trump supporters?? Same with Bruce Springsteen. Born In The USA? Could he have played directly to the people he waited until he took their money and then urinated in their faces to a greater degree? I worked as a musician at the Stardust Hotel during this time when the mob was running it. Lefty Rosenthal was running the hotel as head of the entertainment department. Most everthing in the mivie Casino was accurate. Lefty would have his wife start his car every morning in case it was rigged to explode. When he went to Tony Roma's rib joint for a meeting a bomb was placed under his car. The e
explosion blew out the windows of the Marie Callender's next door. Wild times!

You're talking about how accurate was the movie compared to real life events but the title indicates that something went wrong with it or the perception of the movie has drastically changed over the time. Years ago, I was hired to be part of a "scab" film crew to film a stage show at the Riviera. On the drive from L.A. to Vegas, our crew leader warned us to mention a union local and bosses if we were approached while filming, or we could be in real physical danger. When we got to the casino, the stage manager who met us was straight out of mob central casting and could have easily been part of Nicky's crew. Sure enough, while I was in the middle of filming the show, two huge goons approached me and started asking me questions. I was fortunate that I gave the right answers, because I can honestly say that was one of the scariest moments of my life. I know this has nothing to do with the movie, but I think of that incident whenever I see " Casino".

My family is old time Las Vegas, and my late dad was a partner in one of the original casinos. Even though wonderfully adapted for the screen, this film is pure gold! Mr. Joe Pesci's performance was the best ever. His portrayal of Nicki Santoro was truly blood-chilling in his depiction of Tony The Ant. Now, that's a mobster! Although I can't stand Mr. De Niro's politics, this role, directed by the grand master, Martin Scorsese, he was perfect as Rosenthal. No one could have done it better.
You would think deniro would be smart enough to know the 2 party system is just a tool to divide and conquer. Even a fool like me knows the same exact international bankers own and control both parties. 2 party system is there to offer the illusion of choice. What a sham.
I saw the old Las Vegas spring break 1981 when I was 13, had the time of my life, all the old places like Circus Circus, Flamingo, Ceasars Palace, Dunes, Sands, Frontier, Aladdins, Golden Nugget, Pioneer Club, Showboat, Landmark Hotel, Maxim, MGM, Riviera, Sahara, Stardust.

Back in the day in Chicago Steve Dahl told the story about how he was once at a bar with Anthony Spilotro. Dahl said Spilotro told him the baseball game on the bar's TV would be won by the team that was losing because it was fixed and they did.
Still goes on today just look at the Huston Game last week. The fix was clear for anyone with an objective mind. It makes absolutely no sense to go for 2

I saw Casino opening night and loved it. A few years later I moved to Boca Raton Florida and went to a local reggae club and who was there but lefty Rosenthal ( De Niro’s character ) silk suit and cigarette holder. He was managing or owner of the club . He was a real old school gentleman. This is true . He eventually moved to Miami. The name of his club in boca was Crocs

When Casino opened Rosenthal called the New stations in Boca, he hels a press confrence from his front porch on his 5 acer estate in Boca. I was living in Palm Beach at the time and drove over to see him. Later his kids were grown up and he sold the home and moved into a Condo in Miami, where he worked for off shore gambling and was a consultant at the Hard Rock Casino

Casino is one of my personal favorites. The casting was genius as was the direction/acting. Visually stunning with set and costume design which - even decades later - is remarkable. Gotta admire the old skool way suitcases full of cash were used to transfer wealth. Instantaneous electronic transfers (looking at you HSBC and Deutsche Bank) of stolen billions are today’s norm.
Agreed, it's a gorgeous film, especially the opening titles.
This channel is far superior than History Buffs, much more concise and energetic in comparing actual facts with fiction. Great job folks!👍

@GamebroTV I hear ya, Casino was just way more epic to me. It was like a surreal experience, just watching that film. A complete and utter masterpiece that's 3 hours long and somehow feels like not much time at all.

One thing that's never mentioned is Joe Pesci's accent. He's originally from the East Coast, but his Chicago accent is on point. There might be a subtle, if no distinction to the casual ear. But I'm familiar with both, and JP does an admirable job. He could have just said "fuck it" like De Niro, and used his natural accent, but he put in the effort.
Tony Wheeler de niro is Irish in this movie that’s why he doesn’t have the accent. Pesci is Italian in the movie

This is my most favorite gangster movie of all time, Scarface is a close second and was actually holding the title until Casino came along, absolutely brilliant.

I acted in both films (Bernie Blue in Casino and unnamed Paul Sorvino 1970's Henchman in Goodfellas), and they were based on true events with very little added material.

I remember those days well as a teen, living, going to school and working in VEGAS back then! The Hole in the wall gang (Used in the movie) is what they really called Spillatro's gang after the cut a hole in Bertha's (Think of Ethan Allen on steroids)high end furniture store.
As the actor that played one of the Hole in the Wall Gang (Bernie Blue) I can assure you that our portrayal of that gang was accurate...one of the old members was an advisor on the film and made sure we were accurately represented :)
I was lucky enough to have worked at the Riviera when filmed. Worked overtime to move machines and games per the set. It was really a great experience . Whats sad is all the old Hotel and Casinos are gone now. Whats sadder is? The Mob ran Vegas better, Greed runs Vegas now. Pay for parking? Whos the real criminals?
Yeah, the first one to charge locals for parking was Bob Snow's "Main Street Station" and that parking lot is where they filmed Lefty's car being blown up!

I figured there was very little truth to this at best. I'm even more impressed with this movie and it was already like my favorite movie ever.
The story seems to crazy to be true right? But it seems like 90 percent real. In a weird way you can get it when you watch it.
The movie made Allen Glick (Phillip Green in movie) a passive owner/front man. In real life, He contested Frank Rosenthal's decisions often to the point where Allen was forced to meet a high ranking boss in Kansas City. He let Lefty run the show without interference afterwards.

If Any if you remembers the 1980's series "Crime Story" would have known the "Casino" story because it was used in the series when they moved from Chicago to Las Vegas and using Ray Luca "Anthony Denison" and Max Goldman "Andrew Dice Clay" to tell the story in the roles played by Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro.

Does anyone else find the blowing up of the hotel at 1:45 creepy and somewhat disturbing? Just something about the way it falls triggers an uncanny valley reaction... I think it's the increased speed.
By now DeNiro and Pesci could have sleep walked thru their roles with all the experience they had. Gotta admit it, Scorsesse does these mob movies really great. Italians playing Italians best.

Ginger was actually modeled after Theresa Ferrera. She was a former showgirl who dated Tommy DeSimone. Ironically, DeSimone was the character Pesci played as Tommy DiVito in Goodfellas. Scorcese speaks on this in an interview about The Irishman.

Lefty really did fire the county commissioner's brother in law but it was not the slot manager as depicted in the movie. In real life, Allen glick (phillip green in movie) asked Lefty to evaluate all the executives at the Hacienda hotel and fired one of them. That was a major mistake!
I always called this film Goodfellas in Las Vegas.

Strange how Alphonse "Al" Capone gets mentioned in "Casino" (1995) and Robert DeNiro played him nearly a decade earlier in "The Untouchables" (1987) - worth remembering.

Outstanding video, Brother. As a person who is fascinated with early OC in America, this video is spot on. I have read both books you mentioned in the video. The "mobsters" are a special kind of human. They have no conscience and most no education. Complete psychopaths and sociopaths that function daily in society. A "normal" human would have no chance in their world. It would be a living nightmare for almost all but these "mobsters". If you run with these big dogs, you'll wish to God at some point you stayed on the damn porch. Drive on Brother.

The actors were so much more attractive and mesmerizing then the actual peeps they portrayed.Sharon was so stunning..she deserved an Oscar for this brilliant movie..and The clothes were delicious to look at. Not to mention the incredible soundtrack...wow

I was at the taping of one of the Frank Rosenthal shows. You show a small clip of the one I was at. I witnessed a bit of mob history firsthand.
@Jess W Moved to Vegas in Nov. 73. Had some influential friends there who arranged for a lot of comps and back stage behind the scenes adventures. I would guess this show segment was early 74 but somewhere between then and 77. Sinatra was there as well as Jill St. John, Robert Conrad and Larry Minetti. We were all saying, "who the hell is this Rosenthal guy. We found out later how powerful he really was. Funny thing, we went home later to watch the show and saw an announcement that it would not be shown. Found out that the Tapes of the show had somehow gone missing. All I can say is that maybe the mob was getting tired of the publicity. They were all some real scary guys. When I finaaly saw the movie Casino it hit me about half way through that "Shit, I was there during a lot of this stuff."

The writer of Casino and director said the movie would never been the hit if it wasn't for Frank Coulatas help.
He was on set every day; and was advising them on everything that happened for real.
All the little details and most of the favorite parts in the movie came for him.
He has a channel on TH-cam where he tells hundreds of mob stories about Vegas and Chicago.
He did pass away in August of complications related to Covid, but he record hundreds of videos before he passed away.
Go check his channel out; he is a great story teller and you will be stuck there for hours watching his videos.

I have one nitpick besides the "Al Capone/Black Book" issue that several others have already mentioned: The bar that Tony Dogs shot up wasn't owned by Nicky; it was owned by Remo Gaggi, one of the top mob bosses "back home." A furious Gaggi orders Nicky through Frankie to get "all of the names of all the other people (Dogs) had with him."
The one thing you are leaving out is that it came out about 4 years ago that both Ace and his wife gave info to the FBI on the subject of the mob
Frank Rosenthal became a FBI informant in 1964, his code name was Achilles.

l lived two houses away from Frank Calabrese Jr. in Elmwood Park. My little brother played with his kids. One of my sisters' husband is in that book too, he was an attorney for the Chicago cop that was charged with all those Outfit guys in the Family Secrets trial. And that house where the Spilotros were killed was just outside of O'Hare in Bensenville.

Nicky Santoro didn’t have a nervous tick of naming his thumb because they were under surveillance...they were covering their mouths to keep from having their lips read. They actually had toothpicks in their mouths
I have watched the 5 minutes opening titles of this film a dozen times. Scorsese using the music from Bachs St Matthew Passion was pure genius! To me it signified betrayal and sacrifice and set the emotional mood.
This movie is a masterpice, I dont think we will witness such good movie anymore. Great actors and filming.
I don’t know if anyone will see this but Al Capone was dead before the Vegas “Black Book” was even created. It’s a glaring historical inaccuracy in this film. That being said, it is still one of my favorite films of all time.
