  • Shannon Sharpe and Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson react to the news that Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is benching Russell Wilson for the rest of his second season with the team and likely parting ways with him not long after. Unc and Ocho think it's time for NFL players to stand up to the owners and GMs who are willing to make cutthroat business decisions at the drop of a dime.

The calmness and maturity of this guy is something I wish I had. That's not being a punk, that's being a mature man.

I love Shannon, but he's full of it on this one.
First of all, teams are bound by salary cap. If you want to field a more competitive team, top earners need to take a pay-cut. It's a sad reality, but it is a reality. If you don't take a pay-cut, then it's fine, but don't come around complaining that you don't have a great squad. Look at LeBron, he's bitching about being top-heavy at every opportunity. Dude, you're taking a freaking 50m out of 136m salary cap. Add Anthony Davis on top of that, you two are taking 90m out of 136m. No fucking shit that the team can't build a good squad around your ass with the remaining 46m dollars, when a decent role player costs 15~20m in the market.
Second, the relative scale he's using is bogus. No one is asking the players to take 50~60% pay-cut. They're asking a pay-cut of a million here, or a million there, which is equivalent to 1~5% of the top earner's salaries. Also, a scale such as 10k to a person who's making 20k a year, and a scale of 10m to a person making 20m is completely different. One is unsustainable to live a healthy life, whereas the latter is perfectly capable. So Shannon trying to lecture the fans about the "relative scale" is flawed on its very premise.
Third, he needs to drop that bulljive at taking shots at team's owners. There are obviously shitty ones that just wants to make money, but there are great owners who take money out of their own pocket to field a great team, but are bound by salary cap. The Golden State Warriors, in the previous season, had an operating income of 79 million dollars. The owner placed 700 million dollars to field and run that team. The owner made fewer dollars than Steph Curry and Klay Thompson's salaries combined. Most team owners actually LOSE money running a franchise. They only turn a profit for owning it for a very long time, which is a great risk. Every law firms that had association with sales and purchases of a sports team came out and said this.
I love watching this channel. Shannon is amazing. But he's often in his feelings, but he tries to disguise it as wisdom, and use examples and portray that in a logical way, but a lot of his arguments are actually based on his feelings and perceptions, not facts. He even admitted himself that he often gets in heated argument, and brushes people off who say that he's wrong, without doubting his knowledge, but then later come around and think that he might be wrong. It's certainly better than never admitting that you're wrong, but it sure does seem like he's always in his feelings when trying to make an argument.

Payton treated Russell like he was a billion dollar quarter and expected Russell to be a billion times better than Brees. And then Russell got found out. It is totally just for Payton to expect the HIGHTEST level of play since Russell claimed by taking the money that he was the best player in the world and that the team could be all about him. Russell took the money first in Seattle, handicapping the team, and proving he is all about money, not championships. So he whined and complained and took even more money for the Broncos...and proved to be slightly better than a division 2 college quarterback. Stop complaining about his treatment. Good grief.

Nor is their jobs so tightly linked to the company competing against someone else. In a normal person's job, typically individual performance is weighted higher. The employees typically is not caring as much as an NFL player how its business is performing against another, and employees normally are not worried about championships and how it affects their legacy. There are so many differences between the two situations, but people often resort to the lazy comparison

But he never was taught the things that the Brady's kno or Peyton Manning know. So that's why he's always played backyard football. But I thought Sean Payton was going to take time with him and teach him. When he was in Seattle the legion of boom used to call him all kind of curse words in practice say he wasn't black enough. Not things that you should have to deal with in a work environment. And he still gave them two Super bowl appearances he's the consummate pro

He didn't tell him how to learn to quick game they just ran the ball in Seattle. And Sean Payton saw those highlights and try to make him do the same thing here. You can't bring a tight end like Adam Troutman over here who is supposed to help the run as a bk up and expect Russell to have a great quick game. Russell definitely came to sean trying to learn everything he could. Its documented from jump Sean told Mark scherlith we know what he is and we know what he ain't and we're going to focus on what he did good in Seattle. Sean made sure that he worked on timing w the play clock n running the ball that's about it . There was not a concerted effort to hit the middle of the field or to work on that stuff most likely Sean Payton treated it like a waste of time. I completely understand where Shannon is coming from but when you compare the millionaires and billionaires, it’s still a bit unfair because we’re not asking you to take less from the billionaire each team has a salary cap and if my team desperately needs a defensive back and a safety that would put us over the edge and you are hogging up 35% of our salary cap as the quarterback The owners can’t say well I’m going to pay these guys anyway screw the salary cap at the same time. I understand exactly where the players come from not taking the pay cut, but as a fan of a team with a salary cap, would I have liked if Aaron Rodgers said hey I’m going to take 10 million less to give to another player not to give back to the owners, but to give to another player to make our situation better yes I would have loved it
