This video reminds me of when I stuck in slump first time. it gives me original intention. When I found myself in times of trouble, this video made me clean up and back to the practice. Sometime this kind of lesson is more important than just practicing. Great mental lesson Derek.
I met him in Poland, during his clinics in Opole in 2011. It was an honor to talk with him. So humble, skilled and vital guy. Most of the top drummers tell you that you have to commit yourself, you entire life to drumming with metronome and Derek Roddy is about "Play, play with other musicians and get a life".
BRILLIANT!!! Absolutely freakin' brilliant! I don't even know who Derek Roddy is but I'm about to find out a whooooole lot more about him. I've seen a lot of stuff on TH-cam but this was the best 10 minutes I've spent on here ever. Great advice, great tips and it's obviously coming from a guy that's been down "that road" before. Thanks tons Derek.
The part about know everyone's body language on stage is pure gold. I've played with some great musicians who have technique for days, but just don't quite get it, no matter what instrument, they can play all the right notes and have the most perfect timing, but there's certain things they just don't get no matter how long they've been playing. I may not have the best technique on all the different instruments I play, but I can make my part blend with the whole group better than most, for simple know every musicians characteristics and body language.
This is exactly why I think you're one of the greatest (metal)drummers out there. You're keeping it real and saying it like it is! With every lessonvid I see from you, I can relate to what you're saying, because I experience drumming exactly how you're describing it. Thanks for the great motivation!!
It is great to witness a musician articulate with the instrument. I believe it often comes from a deep understanding of the instrument but also from straight clarity of thoughts and approach. That was great and came from one of the very best IMO.
Tusen takk Derek Roddy!Thank you! This is the answer ive been looking for over some time. Its the ultimate solution! You should get an award or something for that speach!Awesome! Takk igjen!Greetings from Norway!
I agree! This speach has to be a duty in every drumschool! Incretible how fast you can advance your drum-play just becouse of this interview. Thanx, and greetz from Germany! :)
My advice, know your limit USING the metronome, keep the control for 10 min on that bpm speed, raise the speed gradually (2 or 3 mpms a day) and after time you'll be flying without even notice it...
James Hernandez I never said he is wrong and I am right. And my advice is based on the theories of Hannes Grossmann, George Kollias and many other great and also humble drummers the have succeed in the extreme metal scene. Thanks for your so constructive comment.
we're all saying the same thing. Some may need an increase of 1 or 2 while others can increase by more. Increments of 5 or 10 works for me but doesn't work for my band's drummer. Find the core & tweak it to suit you
Hi derrick liked your video i remember watching your video on hand and foot technique when you were on your practice pads you were saying 2 minuetes on each foot then hands for two mins does that still stand in drumming please
well said, i am the worst about just sitting down and running through x workouts and calling it a day. I have learned just recently it is all about control. Working that left foot into patterns is great.
Stick Control, excercises 1-24 every day at VERY SLOW bpm (75-100) for 6 months. You won't believe the carryover to high speed blast beats. It takes slow deliberate strokes to drill the motor pattern into your brain, and time to internalize it.
+newboldspawn But you still have to use your wrist and ankles right? If not we'll train legs and arms at slow speed and then when we'll speed up we won't have the control of our wrist and ankles, am I wrong?
yeah, i agree :) in my opinion, a good example of this is Jonas Johansson from Slice The Cake. although his groove parts aren't exactly Jazz per-se, he combines speed with groove in like 70% of their songs. but i think the best part about Jonas and Derek is that they know when NOT to play and let the music climax. Aaron also doesn't do that a lot. but, nevertheless, they're all incredible drummers. they just have different styles. just because they dont play a certain way, doesnt mean they cant.
What I do for practicing is just keep a practice pad in front of the tv with a pair of drumsticks, and practice whenever I watch tv. Works pretty well for me
Agreed! But therein lies the one main obstacle - making yourself do what you don't want to do. (Or, finding a way to make it fun....which I'm developing on my guitar teaching site right now)
haha was thinking the same thing..... thanks for clearing that up.... and thanks for all the "leasons/tutorials" they help out a lot :-)@DrumBrotherProject
Do what you do to your hands with your feet, rudiments; stick control; different notes like 16th note triplets; different lead; you'll be amazed at the results within a few months
I actually just put up a lesson video on how to increase foot speed and its just using basic rudiments but with a twist! will also work your control and build your backbeat
Derek is the man and definitely has a lot of good ideas... I gotta say I totally disagree on his philosophy on "not practicing" though. You should both practice AND play as much as possible, especially as far as metal goes.
Rod, I'm not sure what you mean about setting a time limit helps you do the exercises better. Are you making the point that if you set a time limit, it's easier to be more disciplined about actually doing the exercises rather than slacking off into jammin & playing what you want?
This, and also time managing your practice time in general and most importantly (for certain things) working on your endurance. If you can't play a certain single strokes thing on hands or on feet during 3 minutes then you won't make it through certain songs, less alone an entire gig.
Is it possible some people just won’t be able to play blast beats and double bass as well as others or as fast no matter how long we practice at it? I’ve been practicing double bass for a year now and I’m not even close to guys like him. Genetics ?
Could be many things (how you practice, what level you were at before, etc) BUT looking at "genetics" as an excuse seems like you're looking at an excuse to not get better. If you want to get better, thinking "i'm not as good as drummer XYZ for this" won't help you and is counter productive.
This really is the best drum lesson ever!! hands down!! what a great guy!
This video reminds me of when I stuck in slump first time. it gives me original intention. When I found myself in times of trouble, this video made me clean up and back to the practice. Sometime this kind of lesson is more important than just practicing. Great mental lesson Derek.

It's weird and awesome to hear from one of the fastest double pedal drummers of the world, that speed isn't the most important
The part about know everyone's body language on stage is pure gold. Derek is really honest and that makes him even more a great man as well as a great musician! Glad you've liked it! J.
It is great to witness a musician articulate with the instrument. I believe it often comes from a deep understanding of the instrument but also from straight clarity of thoughts and approach. That was great and came from one of the very best IMO.
That's why Roddy's up with the best in the world...

You make a lot of sense and I can really relate to what you're saying regarding practice, stamina and control. Glad I discovered this. A new fan.
My advice, know your limit USING the metronome, keep the control for 10 min on that bpm speed, raise the speed gradually (2 or 3 mpms a day) and after time you'll be flying without even notice it...
I think he means to use a metronome but don't focus on what the bpm is, just a tempo that's 'comfortable'
so your unaccomplished arrogant advice is better than an accomplished humble mans advice?..an i understanding this correctly?
James Hernandez I never said he is wrong and I am right. And my advice is based on the theories of Hannes Grossmann, George Kollias and many other great and also humble drummers the have succeed in the extreme metal scene. Thanks for your so constructive comment.

I will definitely try that!

Oop - sorry! That should be Derek, not Rod!!
