Frank is the shit! Bass the way bass is supposed to be played pure groove. And later for the bass face or what he has on . He makes the bass come alive with his spirit,No fancy fast runs just holding that grove down pure fat backing. Would love to have him as a teacher, but I''m 69 years old and have no money, but you touch me every time I pull up your video, you rock Frank itt, through all times and that's all that matters.
One of the things that makes this jam so enjoyable to me, is the way the dude Frank returns to his initial root note every other bar. It is so pleasing to my ear, to know that no matter how much the player will ...wander in other chords, sooner or later he is going to bust that initial note! I find it similar to musical phrases arranged over a drone note... an underlining frequency that keeps the pieces together - in my mind at least! This is this the kind of thing that I can instantly appreciate and relate to!
Frank nailed itt!!! Everyone today wants to slap and pop (and it has it's place), but there's nothing like the clean smooth sound of the classic finger style. LOVE IT!!!
I have played this one like 100 times over past 3 years. Its just best bass vid there is on YT for me. This is where I want to get. Dont get me wrong. There are faster, more WOW players, slappers, record breakers. Frank Itt is the name I say every time some one asks me "who" is my role model for bass.
But, "slapping" first arrived on record (at least) in 1969, when Larry Graham was playing with Sly & The Family Stone on tracks like "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)", and Graham started doing that when he was a kid while playing in church. You can't get no more "old school" than Larry Graham and other the subsequent 1970s era of bass thumbing / slapping / popping. Your comment makes no sense.
I am in USA and always enjoy seeing and hearing a great bassist in Germany or anywhere else in the world. Isn't Bass the World from Germany? They have very talented bassists and Josef you can't tell me you cant compare them to our USA bassists. I don't want a comparison anyway. Just to listen and learn. Peace.
I love watching Frank’s left hand. The dexterity and independence he has is something else. And he is always tasteful in his playing - very much a theme and variations thing happening here. While I resemble Frank a bit, that’s as far it goes. I admire this guy…
I watched this video for a minute and a half dead, then I pulled the side bar down on the right and listened without watching the screen, and man that walking right hand you have is really very, very good...G...
One of my favourite tracks Frank was playing is the „the Duckwalk“ with/from Michael Sagmeister. He even slaps at the end of his solo. Frank has been a big inspiration why I started playing bass. Thanks Track can be found on YT
Man I was grooving to this. I have practice the drums everyday note for the last month. I'm trying to get better. I got tired of playing to church songs so I found this. Two thumbs up.
Hahaaa.
Daumen hoch . Die Behringer-Box im Hintergrund ist aber peinlich .
Well it's almost the hundred time I enjoyed it Frank. Simply great perhaps we'll see us sometime in Salzgitter again. And now folks it's time for me to go for some bass practice, although knowing that it's hard to reach this level. For me it's work and for him just jamming, that's the difference.
I know it's wrong to compare myself to this after just over a year of seriously playing bass but....arrrrgghhh, why can't I come anywhere near this level of improvisation. So good. So envious.
Yeah, man! True skill on bass isn't he who has the fanciest slap-bass solo. Although bass slap can sound cool and add some nice grooves, the job of a bass guitar is low-end support. Stuff like this shows that you can do low-end support with groove. Skilled bass playing is about keeping the song moving and making it look effortlessly.
Six Beers In fair enough , players like victor wooten prove that the bass can lead fantastically , however I think the point mr parl was trying to make is that no instrument does bass groove better...
bass groove = bass, its in the name. I get the point but to many people want to pocket bass as simply a separate portion behind the drums. Much of this is because bass "players", loosely used are sloppy, lazy, one note wonders today. I may not be as good as the kid in the link i used BY FAR but I always refused to simply sit back and play roots behind the guitar for most songs. I even hated covers where the bass did that, unless the guitar was basically doing the same thing. One of my fav covers to play was always "girls not grey" by AFI cause that bass player is amazing. Im tired of lazy, loners picking up the bass because they feel theyre "in the band" with little to no real responsibility except to spew "Im the foundation of the music" or "remove the bass and see how good it sounds"... hey shitstain, stop playing, no one will notice and by how well you play it might actually sound better.
Dude its like with any good performance , each section should carry the whole song and do whatever it needs to do to make the song better , in some cases that is just sitting on the root and groving in others its modally shifting around extended harmony or providing rythmic support to the lead section. Music is music and there are thousands of fantastic pieces of music which have simple bass ideas , just as there are thousands with more developed ideas. In my opinion off the wall (album) by MJ gets the bass balance perfectly in terms of groove to technique ratio. I'll put it this way , I can't think of a single time I would want to hire a bassist to come in the studio and play Demi-quaver ghost note nonsense if I wanted a bass dep.
of you wouldnt because bass has been so shit on no one would care if you did. So you would be pissing money out the window. But I love how you used the example of hiring a bassist as opposed to a bass player just being part of the band and having a say in the music.
Bassists have just as much of role in the creative process , as someone who studies music at university my perception of bassists and drummers has changed somewhat after meeting bassists , pianists , guitarists , vocalists who are all professional quality. I get the point you're getting at ,that many musicians resolve themselves to just doing the bare minimum to suffice but lets face it , that's lazy... people who don't work at their skills can be as you said uninteresting to watch. If a bassist feels they have to just fade into the background they should find a more active band not become a guitar player. peace.
This is the best debunking I*ve seen yet of the endless myth that bass solos were not interesting. I couldn*t stop watching this one. Also, while for most viewers the technical production in the photography of a video is only noticed when it were done poorly, I can see that yours helped capture the visual performance well too here, and you carried that part off naturally as well.
When he was playing with "The Touch" in american army clubs in frankfurt and munich in the 80s... with Terence Trent d´Arby... we called him "the pig"... but in full RESPECT for this great talent and performance! No offend... it was like a big compliment, Frank!

The concept of "never soloing, always soloing" perfectly illustrated. Awesome groove
Nevermind the great play, this man has an amazing jamming face.
+Carl Bernroth HAHAHAHA totally!
the groove himself
Carl Bernroth ...bass face

Sounds good and he never had to start slapping. Old school. Like it.
I agree. Very confident playing style.
I prefer this style to slapping 100% of the time. Gimme that fat tone and those tight ghost notes.
eric pieper ...agreed

Greatest comment ever.

Fucken best comment !
Such a killer groove. I could listen to this all day long
the way he resolves that tritone riff he starts at 3:01 is beyond satisfying
Finaly a nice honest Bass groove perfect Doodelying away in the background on a Saturday morning, gonna play again and then do it myself !
You don't dare to call yourself a bass player if you don't feel what's like to have that look at 4:46. Love it, keep the groove coming!
I am in USA and always enjoy seeing and hearing a great bassist in Germany or anywhere else in the world. Isn't Bass the World from Germany? my ears are smiling !!! pure talent - WOW

I have watched this video several times since it came out, and it always makes me happy :)
Very smooth playing and great bass groove, Love the soft touch you have so many people play to hard.
Damn. That was so good. Restrained, melodic and tasteful.First class playing.
Amazing stuff!! Technique is stellar
Now there's great bass playing and great bass grooving... I think we got a little bit of both worlds there.... Awesome post.
Time to read up on my grooves. Thanks for the new material! Namaste.
This is a prime example of what we like to call "The Groove Face."
You are amazing! I am glad to have run across this post!!!! Relaxed and Tight at the same time....I wish I taken up the bass!!!!
Man I was grooving to this. I have practice the drums everyday note for the last month. I'm trying to get better. I got tired of playing to church songs so I found this. Two thumbs up.
Awesome chops. Very nice groove!
I have heard this groove many many times, this guy es really good!

Awesome! I've seen Frank play live on stage at the Musik Messe Frankfurt, Germany. He really grooves!

I still enjoy listening to this on my playlist
Great technique man! Sound like Stanley Clark without hardly any effort. You are a groove master!

Terrance Mason, you're right. A lot of bassists think that bass is just slapping.
I just picked up my bass for the first time in 20 years and jammed along. I can't keep up with Frank but it was fun trying
By the way, I love that utube has a devoted bass channel.. KEWL!!!
