Hey Cody, on that last piece there after you make the last cut, just move the piece from side to side while it's over the blade to clear out the excess. Just like you moved it over an eighth at a time, just move it fore or aft a bit at a time for each sideways pass. Considerably faster and easier than trying to chisel all those wafers out.
I'm enjoying watching the shop take place, no need to apologize for the time it's taking... You take great pride and joy in your woodworking, and this shop is somewhere where you will be spending a great deal of time... by all means take the time to make a workbench that will enhance that joy...

I dont know much about wood working, only what i learned from my grade 10 wood work class. What i remember doing every time i clamped, I would put scrap pieces of wood where the metal would contact my project, prevent any indents from the clamp on my good pieces of wood. Let me start by saying please don't take this as rude or insensitive, I am not questioning anyone's beliefs as everyone has their right to believe in what they chose. As an atheist myself, I put my faith in science. It is a much shorter road to put my faith in science than for a god being responsible for my existence.
Yes I have marble head and my conclusion is that any being who can create the universe of witch the Earth is but an infitesimal small part of, can in no way be accurately comprehended by humans. To assume that we are made in "his" image is complete folly. So while I can believe in a higher being, I cannot believe in a "personal" higher being.

That jig you built definitely works fine. You can save time when you build jigs if you build a table saw sled. Even complicated cuts like the one you were doing wouldn't take more than 5 minutes to set up with pieces clamped to the fence of a good table saw sled

We may not rely on all the truths of religious teachings, but we do rely upon our own truths, which are often quite similar. Yes, it is sad, and it is scary, but often the truth is that nothing is constant, things always change - and there is as much beauty and joy in that as there is pain and suffering. A ship that is adrift may suffer more the waves and the storms, and it may also be more open to new and prosperous waters. Some ships may do better without the anchor, and some may be lost without it.

+John Fithian-Franks I hope nothing but the best for the wranglerstars but homeschooling with a very strict, narrow interpretation of the bible or any religion for that matter is not a recipe for a well rounded, accepting and logical human being. Let's say hypothetically jack grows up to be a gay man, as roughly 4% of the population is, the level of inner turmoil and self hate caused by by this upbringing would be unbearable. Christianity and most religions are very much fear based cultures, and when you don't fit the mold, you are a vile sinner. Shame is the name of the game here. But being dead set in one thought process is just pretty silly and unproductive. I was homeschooled but i had more freedom and exposure to actual uncensored science and history, which most homeschooled kids don't. Scott Nei he may be going to finish it with something once it is done. a wet rag will impregnate the glue into the fibers. A finish then won't be able to soak into the fibers
Lots of people don't want to wet the wood. This is one of the very good reasons not to. Another method for applying glue is to actually spread the glue (before the clamp pressure) using a foam paintbrush or the like. If you always spread the same amount of glue over wood as a layer, then the amount of glue pushing out is a rough measure of clamp pressure. You really want to start using cauls when clamping as well. Consistent clamping pressure and avoids the clamp marks. Enjoying your videos; keep it up and happy birthday to Jack.

Long time viewer / subscriber and big fan of your work and your channel. That being said, I really have a hard time with your social / political additions. First, don't feel sorry for those who don't have a book to latch onto, being a "ship adrift" isn't scary, quite the contrary. I find it both exciting and humbling that values I hold dear could be changed given the right situation or experience. To me it's concerning that someone would be so deeply entrenched in their beliefs that they couldn't possible be changed. Even the most clearly defined laws create grey areas, hence the need for courts to interpret them. Second, it seems like a dangerous double standard to attribute anything to God if man has a stake in it. To expand on that, who's to say that Trump's election wasn't an act of mislead men, and that the opposition isn't the response of God weighing on men's hearts? In the long run it's all "God's will" but to say that we understand what that will is at any one time seems ridiculous. Again, I'm a big fan of what you've contributed to the TH-cam community, please continue to make great videos. I have a huge amount of respect for you, your self-reliance and strength of character, but I don't believe those things make you an expert on politics (not that I am either). When you add this sort of content to your videos you transfer your reputation in one field for that of another. It would be like a engineer giving medical advise. Yes, this person is very smart and well trained, but not for the area he's advising on. Just my $.02.

I'll offer a few tidbits that may help you next time. 1. Glue is cheap. 2. Let the glue partially set and use a chisel. 3. Wet rags work, but you may pay for it later when you apply a finish. 4. Never dull a hand plane on hard glue. That's what cheap chisels and scrapers are for. Thanks for the great videos.
I was wondering about the plane, glue hardens stronger than the wood and I imagined it would be rough on the plane. I paid the price of using a wet rag recently on a walnut piece. Ever so slightly, but there's a little bit that wouldn't take my oil finish like the rest of the piece.

Hello Mr. W. Let me preface my response to your brief monologue at the end of this video by saying I have a great respect for what you do and what you think. That said; I am an atheist and although I can understand your point of view on how the bible provides for you a sense of direction and gives you a rock to lean on, you seem to have a skewed view of what being an atheist is. I too have an anchor to rally to and a sense of direction to follow just as you do, however my values aren't printed in an ancient text but founded on common sense and ethics. For example: I don't steal things not because a god says I shouldn't but because it is simply not the right thing to be doing (I lack an interest in receiving what would be the obvious return on my effort for being found a thief.). If I want something ethically it is correct for me to go and work to acquire it. I could go on, but I think I may have made enough of my point for now. TL;DR Don't feel bad for me, we are all stumbling the same road working as best we can, to find happiness in what we can, however we can. All this said, I look forward to your next video and every one after it, I learned a long time ago I don't have to believe everything a man believes to respect him, I simply need to understand what he means when he says the things I may not believe. verteup I used to be a stoner, I was all into the legalization of pot back in the 1980s and 1990s. I am glad I quit 25 years ago but can think of worse things to do. It is a non-issue for me. That said, anything that removes you from reality is sin. You miss the point, as does your friend Forge North. The Bible shows us we are all sinful and that we better find a way out from under its penalty.

love your vids. i disagree you need a guidebook to know right from wrong, that statement is in fact quite worrisome. That's the whole point Eighty cc: Relying on something bigger than you does two things: a) You unnecessarily humiliate yourself b) You conveniently offload the responsibility for your decisions to something else. Yay! Religion - regardless which - us fundamentally driven by humans being incapable of accepting the fact that they do not know everything, or cannot explain everything with their current knowledge. Therefore, they fill the gap with something that resonates their current intellectual capacity. This is very similar to what science does, in that science establishes theories that explain the observed exhibition of behaviour. The big difference between religion and science is that religion stops short right there, and declares the theory as truth, encrusting the frame of reference with dogma. Science goes further, and works towards finding evidence as hard and as accurate as can be to support the theory. A universally - for as far as science is concerned - accepted axiom of science is that anything that has not been underpinned with collected evidence is considered as unproven thoughts. A major portion of the effort of science is attributed to exactly that - a constant "battle " (for the lack of a better word) to reach a point that the general scientific community accepts the presented evidence as sufficient to resolve a theory as part of the foundation for new discoveries. This is only one part of the checks and balances that science is using to minimise erring - as part of the many. Any religion that I studied so far is lacking exactly that, the checks and balances. Only dogma. On the topic of morals, any society that emerges or has emerged from individualism and anarchy - be it western societies, or tribes, or anything in between - arrives at something that I would describe as a code of conduct on how to live together. Simple as that. However, societies that would be labeled as "nature religion based" have a significantly different approach to this code of conduct when compared to the book religions: a) Gods, or deities, exist - but they err just as much as humans do. b) Humans may have been created by gods, but the gods have given them the power of free will. c) Those who talk to gods are humans, hence err, too. d) Humans are a part of nature, hence cannot exist without it. Compare that to the typical characteristics of book religions: a) There is one god, and that god knows everything, and never errs. b) Humans are created by that god, but are imperfect and commit sins. c) Those who talk to god speak the divine tongue that must be abided by. d) Humans are the pinnacle of that god's creations and therefore entitled to rule over nature. e) Those that are faithful are the chosen ones, and all others are heretics. Compare the two generalisations. One set is clearly one that is built on authoritative power of some(thing) over others - and is justified by the dogmatic presumption of superiority of a supernatural abstract entity called God, Allah, or Jahwe. Oh and before this is getting into flamewars: Point e) above is present in *all* book religions, including their various different shards and derivatives. The only difference is their model of how to deal with heretics.
On self-humiliation: You proved my point in staying in the most fundamental contradiction of book religions. I won't serve it on a silver platter to you - I leave it as an opportunity for selfstudy. Simple, short answer to your question: Yes I am certain - with the constraint that I speak for those that I know, and those I extrapolate on. Again, you contradict yourself with your question - and this one I will resolve for you: Those relying on Religion do not have to exercise self-control, as everything is laid out for themselves which they simply have to follow - usually out of fear (because otherwise you will become a heathen who will rot in purgatory, hell, or whatever) of punishments. A fundamental trait of book religion without which they simply do not operate. Convenient free of charge service, however: Perpetual confession and absolution. Those free of the religious corset however, have to put up with themselves, realising that no one but themselves is responsible for their lack of self-control, motivation or anything else. So, summing up: It is those who revert to (book) religion who are unable to face the consequences of true self-reflection.

As an agnostic libertarian I live by the Non-Aggression principle. Also I lean on liberty. I also grew up Christian Reformed so the ten commandants ring true. Morals aren't necessarily intrinsic to Christianity or any other religion. Love the channel. Keep up the good work. To each his own.

When we made diagonals for bracing and doubled them as you did, we would drill at least two holes through the diagonal side and drive 3/4" dowels through to increase shear strength so over time the glue joint would not shear or weaken. We'd dry the dowels in the oven (low heat for a half hour or so to slightly shrink them), and then drive them in holes the size of the unshrunk dowels. The slightest humidity would swell them back to size and they were locked in as if screwed in place. Never had any come loose, and some of the joints are now over fifty years old.

I've seen people use an ink roller to apply glue to a project. Spreads evenly. Scrape the glue after an hour or so after it crusts up. Makes it much easier. God Bless bud!
Your reflection at the end of the video is the essence of a peaceful life. Like the no religion, politics, race or sexual subjects at the table / school / work, etc. As much as one can internalize it, the easier to find equilibrium will be. Great video Cody
I used a plastic card to spread the glue and only need a thin layer, also avoid gluing the last 1/2 inch around the end. once you clamp your wood together the glue will squeeze out to the edge for you.

I use a 4" ink roller to spread glue and it works great. i also wait an hour after clamping then scrap the excess glue with a Triangle Scraper. That seem to work best for me. keep up the good work.

Hi Cody,. I really enjoy your inspiring videos. One tip on removing excess glue. After your parts are glued up, go back in about 20 minutes or so and scrape the glue off in its semi hardened state. It will be pliable and peel right off if you catch it at the right stage of its cure. Give this method a try and see what you think. Best Regards

3:57 What I've learned from the videos is that too little glue is worse than dripping out. You really spread it out for the complete surfaces to be in contact, so those will be joined forever as if they were a single piece of wood. Great job and thank you for the valuable lessons!!

I have never done it myself, so I very might be wrong, but I have seen a lot of people make the dato the same way you did with a quarter of the cuts. wood becomes very weak when the strips gets thin. Will save you a lot of time and battery power!

Hey Cody, on that last piece there after you make the last cut, just move the piece from side to side while it's over the blade to clear out the excess. Just like you moved it over an eighth at a time, just move it fore or aft a bit at a time for each sideways pass. Considerably faster and easier than trying to chisel all those wafers out.

I dont know much about wood working, only what i learned from my grade 10 wood work class. What i remember doing every time i clamped, I would put scrap pieces of wood where the metal would contact my project, prevent any indents from the clamp on my good pieces of wood.

Let me start by saying please don't take this as rude or insensitive, I am not questioning anyone's beliefs as everyone has their right to believe in what they chose. As an atheist myself, I put my faith in science. It is a much shorter road to put my faith in science than for a god being responsible for my existence.
Yes I have marble head and my conclusion is that any being who can create the universe of witch the Earth is but an infitesimal small part of, can in no way be accurately comprehended by humans. To assume that we are made in "his" image is complete folly. So while I can believe in a higher being, I cannot believe in a "personal" higher being.

Might I suggest that you use wax paper under the clamp bars? Prevents staining of the wood and glue getting on the bars.
That jig you built definitely works fine. You can save time when you build jigs if you build a table saw sled. Even complicated cuts like the one you were doing wouldn't take more than 5 minutes to set up with pieces clamped to the fence of a good table saw sled

Mr Wranglerstar note to self if you would have used a wet rag and wiped off the wet glue you would not have worked so hard after it dried
Scott Nei he may be going to finish it with something once it is done. a wet rag will impregnate the glue into the fibers. A finish then won't be able to soak into the fibers
Lots of people don't want to wet the wood. This is one of the very good reasons not to.
Another method for applying glue is to actually spread the glue (before the clamp pressure) using a foam paintbrush or the like. If you always spread the same amount of glue over wood as a layer, then the amount of glue pushing out is a rough measure of clamp pressure.
You really want to start using cauls when clamping as well. Consistent clamping pressure and avoids the clamp marks.

Long time viewer / subscriber and big fan of your work and your channel. That being said, I really have a hard time with your social / political additions.
First, don't feel sorry for those who don't have a book to latch onto, being a "ship adrift" isn't scary, quite the contrary. I find it both exciting and humbling that values I hold dear could be changed given the right situation or experience. To me it's concerning that someone would be so deeply entrenched in their beliefs that they couldn't possible be changed. Even the most clearly defined laws create grey areas, hence the need for courts to interpret them.
Second, it seems like a dangerous double standard to attribute anything to God if man has a stake in it. To expand on that, who's to say that Trump's election wasn't an act of mislead men, and that the opposition isn't the response of God weighing on men's hearts? In the long run it's all "God's will" but to say that we understand what that will is at any one time seems ridiculous.
Again, I'm a big fan of what you've contributed to the TH-cam community, please continue to make great videos. I have a huge amount of respect for you, your self-reliance and strength of character, but I don't believe those things make you an expert on politics (not that I am either). When you add this sort of content to your videos you transfer your reputation in one field for that of another. It would be like a engineer giving medical advise. Yes, this person is very smart and well trained, but not for the area he's advising on.

I'll offer a few tidbits that may help you next time.
1. Glue is cheap.
2. Let the glue partially set and use a chisel.
3. Wet rags work, but you may pay for it later when you apply a finish.
4. Never dull a hand plane on hard glue. That's what cheap chisels and scrapers are for.

I was wondering about the plane, glue hardens stronger than the wood and I imagined it would be rough on the plane. I paid the price of using a wet rag recently on a walnut piece. Ever so slightly, but there's a little bit that wouldn't take my oil finish like the rest of the piece.
I use an old #80 Stanley scraper for dry glue removal.

Hello Mr. W. Let me preface my response to your brief monologue at the end of this video by saying I have a great respect for what you do and what you think.
That said; I am an atheist and although I can understand your point of view on how the bible provides for you a sense of direction and gives you a rock to lean on, you seem to have a skewed view of what being an atheist is. I too have an anchor to rally to and a sense of direction to follow just as you do, however my values aren't printed in an ancient text but founded on common sense and ethics. For example: I don't steal things not because a god says I shouldn't but because it is simply not the right thing to be doing (I lack an interest in receiving what would be the obvious return on my effort for being found a thief.). If I want something ethically it is correct for me to go and work to acquire it.
I could go on, but I think I may have made enough of my point for now.
TL;DR Don't feel bad for me, we are all stumbling the same road working as best we can, to find happiness in what we can, however we can.
All this said, I look forward to your next video and every one after it, I learned a long time ago I don't have to believe everything a man believes to respect him, I simply need to understand what he means when he says the things I may not believe.

I used to be a stoner, I was all into the legalization of pot back in the 1980s and 1990s. I am glad I quit 25 years ago but can think of worse things to do. It is a non-issue for me. That said, anything that removes you from reality is sin. You miss the point, as does your friend Forge North. The Bible shows us we are all sinful and that we better find a way out from under its penalty.

As an atheist, I have my kids, my family, my hobbies, my interests, my conscience, my morals, my hopes, my dreams, and my upbringing to latch onto and guide me through my life. It's naive to think someone who's agnostic or atheist doesn't have anything to hang onto in life. Anything a person can hang onto go get them through this crazy, unpredictable and difficult thing we call life I would consider a good thing.
Also, there's no need for a "guidebook to life" for a lot of people, Cody. For that's what you call it, but to someone else it's just a book written by uneducated desert dwelling goat herders. It doesn't take a book to know to be good to people and do to others as you wish to be done to you.

You can have a code of honor and morals without belief in any religion cody, if you need someone else or something else to tell you how to live because you're not able to be a decent person, you're the problem.
Natural law, do no harm, do not steal. And you cant give away your responsability. Mark Passio have some good lectures on that one. Many of the things he says makes sense.
Eighty cc: no, but when you have enough knowledge to separate right from wrong its your responsability and cant lean on what someone else says or does. Listen to them but decide for yourself. But naturally, you need to get that knowledge from somewhere to start with.
That's the whole point Eighty cc: Relying on something bigger than you does two things:
a) You unnecessarily humiliate yourself
b) You conveniently offload the responsibility for your decisions to something else. Yay!
Religion - regardless which - us fundamentally driven by humans being incapable of accepting the fact that they do not know everything, or cannot explain everything with their current knowledge. Therefore, they fill the gap with something that resonates their current intellectual capacity. This is very similar to what science does, in that science establishes theories that explain the observed exhibition of behaviour.
The big difference between religion and science is that religion stops short right there, and declares the theory as truth, encrusting the frame of reference with dogma. Science goes further, and works towards finding evidence as hard and as accurate as can be to support the theory. A universally - for as far as science is concerned - accepted axiom of science is that anything that has not been underpinned with collected evidence is considered as unproven thoughts.
A major portion of the effort of science is attributed to exactly that - a constant "battle " (for the lack of a better word) to reach a point that the general scientific community accepts the presented evidence as sufficient to resolve a theory as part of the foundation for new discoveries.
This is only one part of the checks and balances that science is using to minimise erring - as part of the many. Any religion that I studied so far is lacking exactly that, the checks and balances. Only dogma.
On the topic of morals, any society that emerges or has emerged from individualism and anarchy - be it western societies, or tribes, or anything in between - arrives at something that I would describe as a code of conduct on how to live together. Simple as that. However, societies that would be labeled as "nature religion based" have a significantly different approach to this code of conduct when compared to the book religions:
a) Gods, or deities, exist - but they err just as much as humans do.
b) Humans may have been created by gods, but the gods have given them the power of free will.
c) Those who talk to gods are humans, hence err, too.
d) Humans are a part of nature, hence cannot exist without it.
Compare that to the typical characteristics of book religions:
a) There is one god, and that god knows everything, and never errs.
b) Humans are created by that god, but are imperfect and commit sins.
c) Those who talk to god speak the divine tongue that must be abided by.
d) Humans are the pinnacle of that god's creations and therefore entitled to rule over nature.
e) Those that are faithful are the chosen ones, and all others are heretics.
Compare the two generalisations. One set is clearly one that is built on authoritative power of some(thing) over others - and is justified by the dogmatic presumption of superiority of a supernatural abstract entity called God, Allah, or Jahwe.

A fundamental trait of book religion without which they simply do not operate. Convenient free of charge service, however: Perpetual confession and absolution. Nice way out!, I acknowledge my sins and failures and *poof* away goes any need or motivation to better myself! Again, offloading that responsibility to someone else...
Those free of the religious corset however, have to put up with themselves, realising that no one but themselves is responsible for their lack of self-control, motivation or anything else.
So, summing up: It is those who revert to (book) religion who are unable to face the consequences of true self-reflection.

Ben Fellows - Well, you assume you aren't adrift. You feel like you have morals and principles, and faith. But without God, your truth is derived from human standards. Thus you have easier levels to attain to make you feel like you are doing ok. The real truth is that you need God (yes, capital "G") in order to be held to a higher standard. A standard that will earn you eternal peace in the presence the One that created all. So while you "feel" like you are doing ok, it is a false sense of security. Find God my friend, He is the only real truth.

I would make two separate jigs for each cut. You have one already with the 45. Then find the other angle and make that cut. Two cuts and your done!
When we made diagonals for bracing and doubled them as you did, we would drill at least two holes through the diagonal side and drive 3/4" dowels through to increase shear strength so over time the glue joint would not shear or weaken. We'd dry the dowels in the oven (low heat for a half hour or so to slightly shrink them), and then drive them in holes the size of the unshrunk dowels. The slightest humidity would swell them back to size and they were locked in as if screwed in place. Never had any come loose, and some of the joints are now over fifty years old.

I've seen people use an ink roller to apply glue to a project. Spreads evenly. Scrape the glue after an hour or so after it crusts up. Makes it much easier. God Bless bud!

I used a plastic card to spread the glue and only need a thin layer, also avoid gluing the last 1/2 inch around the end. once you clamp your wood together the glue will squeeze out to the edge for you.

I use a 4" ink roller to spread glue and it works great. i also wait an hour after clamping then scrap the excess glue with a Triangle Scraper. That seem to work best for me. keep up the good work.

Hi Cody,. I really enjoy your inspiring videos. One tip on removing excess glue. After your parts are glued up, go back in about 20 minutes or so and scrape the glue off in its semi hardened state. It will be pliable and peel right off if you catch it at the right stage of its cure. Give this method a try and see what you think. Best Regards

3:57 What I've learned from the videos is that too little glue is worse than dripping out.
You really spread it out for the complete surfaces to be in contact, so those will be joined forever as if they were a single piece of wood.

I have never done it myself, so I very might be wrong, but I have seen a lot of people make the dato the same way you did with a quarter of the cuts. wood becomes very weak when the strips gets thin. Will save you a lot of time and battery power!
