Just because they got the knife away from him in this hypothetical situation does NOT mean they were also able to immediately put him in handcuffs or subdue him. People fight back and resist and can easily become a lethal threat in a split second even if they are unarmed. Especially when on drugs and/or have an extreme will to not be arrested. In a split second he could have started strangling someone involved; the neck on the human body is extremely vulnerable so lethal force could be used on them to stop them from severely injuring or killing the person they are strangling. Or, another scenario, the suspect could be unarmed but in a split second they could become armed again - unholstering a cops pistol, grabbing a rock from the floor, grabbing the knife somehow, etc etc - and in that split second, a cop has to choose to either take action or risk the suspect using whatever they are attempting to get their hands on to severely injure or kill someone. She was actually one of the more convincing ones, and had she known the name of her service pistol I would thought her the cop possibly. People think America's policing is bad, like that one person said, because America is sensationalized and the most popular and talked about country. People forget 3rd or 2nd world countries, they forget that other places in the world are way, way worse than anything in America or the UK, they forget about the places where governments are run by criminal enterprises, etc.

I think if he came prepared with a couple of stories he would have done better, as it was they asked him some specifics and he completely had nothing. I have defend Matt here on that. "Miranda" rights are only in the US. The Miranda rights here in the US came after a 1966 Supreme Court case issued Miranda vs Arizona. In the UK, the rights are read as follow "You do not have to say anything. But, it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence"

It’s not actually called the Miranda rights there, it’s called the Police Caution I believe. I think they are just calling it that because it’s quite common on American TV. It’s a completely different thing read out
Miranda rights come from Miranda v. Arizona, a landmark case decided by the US Supreme Court. It reaffirms the self-incrimination clause of the 5th Amendment to the US Constitution and establishes that any statements made by those who have NOT been informed of their rights were forced to incriminate themselves, meaning that such statements cannot be used in a court of law. Miranda rights show up in a lot of American television, so internationals less versed in their own legal traditions sometimes get the wrong idea. English law is very similar to American law. In fact, English common law is the basis of the legal system in 49 states. (Louisiana is based on the French system.) But early America had these amendments to protect freedoms that weren't recognized by Britain at the time, such as freedom from the obligation to quarter soldiers, but the UK has since evolved its laws to be on par with the rest of the free world. I'm positive England has something similar to Miranda rights, but it's probably called something different and the technical details are also probably different.

So while the American rights tell you your fifth amendment right and that your entitled to a lawyer the UK Police Caution says that anything you say can be used in court and you don't have to say anything to us but if you don't say something and you use that in court it might not work your way.

I could tell straight away who it was. The way they fold their arms is the give away. The police train you when you fold them not to tuck your hands under but to keep them on top of your elbows as it's quicker to react. It's a hard habit to get out of after years.

I think if he came prepared with a couple of stories he would have done better, as it was they asked him some specifics and he completely had nothing.
Like when he started talking about not liking the corruption and then had no examples of it, just say cops would steal from drug dealers, or extort local businesses for protection money, the correct attitude IMO but didn't have any back story to flesh it out and make it seem believable.

I have defend Matt here on that. "Miranda" rights are only in the US. The Miranda rights here in the US came after a 1966 Supreme Court case issued Miranda vs Arizona. In the UK, the rights are read as follow "You do not have to say anything. But, it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence"

So glad I wasn’t the only one who clocked that. The Miranda rights only came about because Miranda committed a homicide and got away with it because he wasn’t told his rights. I love this case though because later on Miranda was killed by another man and that SAME man who killed Miranda used the Miranda rights. It’s iconic.

@@CatnamedMittens It is required before questioning. If you're not being questioned then you don't need to have them read. It's always been this way.
You can theoretically go down for life in prison without ever hearing the miranda rights if the cops don't question you. There's no requirement to question a suspect.
