Here's a further insight of the original platform Jak and daxter was released upon Here it is : The PlayStation 2 (PS2) is a home video game console developed and marketed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was first released in Japan on 4 March 2000, in North America on 26 October 2000, in Europe on 24 November 2000, and in Australia on 30 November 2000. It is the successor to the original PlayStation, as well as the second installment in the PlayStation brand of consoles. As a sixth-generation console, it competed with Nintendo's GameCube, Sega's Dreamcast, and Microsoft's Xbox. It is the best-selling video game console of all time, having sold over 158 million units worldwide
After years of needing my older brother's help to beat games, beating Jak 2 on my own as a child is probably the moment I had become a video game playing man.
Talking about beating Jak and Daxter, I remember a great deal of playing all of the older Jak games A LOT, but I've never found the time to beat Jak 2 and 3. Just recently have I started to get back into the grind of Jak and so hopefully I can beat it in the next month or two, wish me luck.
Bruh I never beat that boss battle with the fat mf in the floating chair! It still haunts me that I never got any farther. I have been reduced to a young boy for life. Lol
The weapon ammo in jak 2 resembles the powers of eco from the first game, red being short range high damage, blue being speed, yellow being single shot fire, and peacemaker of course being dark eco. Too cool.
As a kid, I went to a friend's house and played a game with a buggy driving around the desert. 15ish years later I finally know what game it was (Jak 3) thanks to this video.
didnt had a memory card back then so i played jak 3 everyday from the start to the point i speedrunned the game in 11 hours. gosh my childhood was good
12:22 I just like to note that although the Eco powers were removed, they were essentially replaced with according Eco guns where every gun represents an eco type that has similar attributes to the Eco powers of the first game.
I love in the games, Eco has states just like regular matter. Solid (eco crystals), liquid (the dark eco pools) gas (eco vents), plasma (dark eco lightning/light eco shield/gun projectiles/gun emissions), and a fifth state (eco pickups) I want to say the fifth state is supercritical, but supercritical matter irl has no surface tension and fills whatever container it's in. The states also seem to not depend on temperature/pressure. Weird stuff
In Jak 3, me and the friend that got me into Jak and Daxter found it that the Dune Hopper was actually the BEST vehicle overall. The grenade launcher insta-killed any enemy vehicles caught within the explosion radius. Added with Turboing from Midjump-Peak of Jump, as long as you were going half of the Max Speed, you would essentially clear 5-6 car lengths before landing again. The game was broken, as any desert level (without a Set Vehicle) essentially didn't exist anymore. We'd just have to kill the first 2 enemies, and then just start chaining from there. We never took any damage, and could make it across the Desert Map within 1 min.
The Precursor legacy was the first ever game i remember playing, and Jak 3 is probably the game i replayed the most. This franchise defined my love for games, it's truly special to me. 🥰 Music is awesome too!
The Jak and Daxter Era was great, game developers being like "you know what would be cool? if we add this to the game" when they don't have to but do any way and it turns out to be a blast.
I got 2 tips for Jak 2 1st: Crimson Guard ambush, Use your hover board on the wooden walkways helps get past ships quicker, hop on and off it when you need so you don't fall in the water 2nd: Metal Lord final phase, use the overboard to circle round for some reason he can't keep up give you time and distance to shoot him
I remember finding *Jak 3* at a GameStop years ago, back when ratchet and clack where somewhat still a thing (I think). Loved the desert bits and the fighting in this game. The dark and light jak power ups where super cool then the weapon upgrades enhanced the game that much further for me. 9/10 game as I was growing up, highly recommend people give this game series a shot.
The first Jak game was actually the first video game I ever played so it holds a very special place in my heart. Even though it's not nearly as popular I would say Ratchet & Clank is still a thing, the new game released only last year or smth. This is completely unrelated but I like your pfp, One Piece is such an amazing series.
@@thealmightycouch311 Thanks! Yes, I remember seeing a few things about the new Ratchet & Clank game that had come out. After looking through my game book around the same time or a year later or so. I discovered the Ratchet & Clank series with *Ratchet & Clank Deadlocked* and *Up Your Arsenal* on the Ps2. Only two games I've played and enjoyed for hours on end.
I'd also like to add: the morph gun uses eco for ammo. The scatter gun used red, and like in the first game, you have to get up close and personal to deal damage. The blaster uses yellow, and like in the first game gives you some good long range. The Vulcan Fury uses blue, and as such, has a fast rate of fire. And of course the Peace Maker uses dark eco to deal a huge amount of damage. So all the types of eco are still used in 2 and 3, just not in the same way. Equally, eco is used in X for car abilities but I've yet to actually play it so I don't know exactly which is used for what, aside from blue for the boost
If you are interested in playing the original Jak a team has made the game work natively on PC with settings an modding in the possible future it's called opengoal. They plan on doing the entire trilogy.
I've played a few of the Jak games never got to far, im very fond of the storyline I'm gonna have to force myself to play the trilogy lmao great video!!
Honestly, a lot of the difficulty in Jak 2 can be cut down by just using the Vulcan Fury liberally. It singlehandedly makes the seal piece in water slums mission a total breeze, and its stunlocking ability makes it useful against all of the toughest enemies. It's the main reason why I found hero mode to be a relative breeze.
I never finished the first Jak and Daxter but I played the hell outta 2 and 3. Whatever they were trying to do it worked on me, I thought they were cool as hell.
Jak 1 was a fun goofy platformer Jak 2 had more edge than a medieval armoury and was more engaging Jak 3 lost some of the edge and gained some fun and lightheartedness Jak X was Jak and Daxter Kart lmao
Technically the "Escape from the Water Slums" mission isnt actually that hard when you know how to do it properly. Just shoot the guards that the dropships bring out, and the dropship closest to you will fly away. You just have to be able to take out the guards, or at least shoot them before any one of them individually fire more than 3 shots, as their 4th shot will always perfectly hit you. If you do it right and be patient, and remember to check behind you ever so often since they can sneak up on you, you can get through the mission without even taking any damage. Especially if you use the Vulcan Fury for parts of this.
FUN FACT: You can cheese the seal piece mission by hoverboarding on the docks instead of the water. your too fast for the ships to shoot you because you will be out of range of the laser before they shoot, and you will pass before troops get dropped- i completed it in like 30 seconds with no bullet fired no health lost
The waterslums mission can be done with the hoverboard, you just have to stay on the walkway. and if you get it right its much easier as u beat the guards dropping from the ships.
I really think there is no need for it. If one day J&D comes back, they would reboot it, and if so, it will end up with a generic woke storyline just like TLOU2.
Ah those Dream Sequences from Daxter was my childhood. I remember being addicted to the Matrix one so much that I can complete that sequence 100% with my eyes closed
It’s like this era has been off limits to remasters and remakes in a way that others have been spared. I have fond memories of these games from back when I was so young I couldn’t read or figure out how to finish them.
Talking about the load times tricks. Here's a fun fact: if the game has trouble catching up to the player an animation of jak tripping and falling on the ground will play. This rarely happens if you play the ps4 version. But this also sadly meant that if your disc was messed up , jak would just keep doing that , forever
For Jak 2…. I never thought it was overly frustrating. Except for that one mission where you’re on the docks and get bombarded by crimson guards. I liked it quite a bit besides that part. Lol
The only part of the game I remember being stuck on was the button matching mini game for the parot monkey about 3/4ths of the way through the game. I actually didn't complete it until after playing through jak 3 a year later as a kid lol
@@abbababba2554 haaa I remember staying the night at a friend's at 12 years old or something and we were getting so pissed at that part, but also dying laughing at each other's frustration
Yeah the intention with that mission is ur suppose to play it with more upgrades so you can do more as dark jak or have harder hitting guns . Problem is you can do it early and suffer and most people do it that way
if I were to play through the series again, I think I'd mostly skip 2. A couple of those clips of the tricky camera angles brought back some extremely frustrating memories lol.
This series was my childhood. Got a precursor orb tattooed on my forearm when I turned 18. Would I get it again now that I’m 25? Probably not but these games are the GOAT haha
Oh my God, that Slums Run in Jak 2 just gave me flashbacks. One of the worst designed missions in gaming, despite the rest being pretty darn fun (And a bit overly difficult). If I remember right there was a way to cheese it by roll jumping.
There's a few cheese strats, like dark bomb on the death robot in the water or mashing square to punch. But the average player isn't going to realize that 😂
It's funny how the most criticized aspect of Jak 2 is that there isn't enough checkpoints but at the same time, if the game had more checkpoints, it would make the boring and barren open world more obvious. Imagine this: You are driving for 5-10 minutes and then you do a mission that lasts up to 10 minutes at the most and then you do another 10 minute driving segment, then another 10 minute mission. Everyone would be calling this game, "hovercar riding simulator". The lack of checkpoints is a flaw that is meant to hide another bigger flaw with the game. Jak 2's open world had interesting idea with the different vehicle planes and different car builds but it's a glorified mission select menu at heart.
i played the first Jack and Dexter really intensively and for a long time as a child. At the time I thought it was simply the best game with Haven: Call of the King that I had ever played and you made my fingers tingle with unpacking my dusty Playstation 2 again and playing Haven: Call of the King and Jack and Dexter ! a very great video, thank you very much for that
Jak 3 is my favorite game of the series but i think Jak X is criminally underrated. The story is cool and the soundtrack is still on my playlists to this day, its just awesome
Legit just watched a retrospective on this series within the past few days. I'll be honest, they took 2+ hours and this was way more informative. I didn't actually get to play the series. Love the shit Niosai!
@@caylobbailey5149 good call. Niosai did a way better job though. They had many of the same points but it didn't take Niosai 3 hours to make them. If you see this Niosai, thank you for knowing how to be concise and stay on track. I get excited every time I'm surprised by a new video of yours. Feel like I'm watching a band play shows before they get huge.
Jak 2 was the first video game that made me throw a controller in rage 🤣 I got stuck on that mission at the strip mine where you needed the hover board to throw in those bombs on the eco devices. Racing Erol through the city while hitting all the rings was also BS too.
This series was my childhood, I even remember the trailer for the 1st game when I WAS 4 YEARS OLD. My top 3 series for sure and would wish it to be remade or something. PS4 re-release few years back was a great nostalgic trip and felt like new experience at the same time. I could now understand the story and speak english as it wasn't my 1st language.
So many fans didn't know Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier existed. I played the life out of the first three games during the early 2000's and always wished for more until one day I went into Family Video and walked by it on the shelf. I couldn't believe my eyes and I quickly picked up to look it over. Sure enough, it was the next installment after Jak 3. A lot of people wonder what ever happened to Jak 4 and well, that was it. lol
16:13 I hate this mission with all my heart. After dying for hours I realized that i could skip parts of the mission using the jetboard (only thing is that if you touch the water you die). Still haunting me in my nightmares
Struggling with the jak 2 timed bomb mission on the hover board. With the difficulty of the levels you don’t really get the satisfaction of completing it, more so relief that you don’t have to continue doing the level over and over again and can actually finish the storyline 😭
Loved this series; Jak II and III were some of the few games I had on my PS2 when I was a child. I've also always considered and played them as some kind of Grand Theft Auto; in fact, since I was too young to play GTA, I remember asking my parents to gift me Jak 3, so that I could have had something similar to play.
"every level was designed by a different person" - paraphrased - THAT is a great point re: Jak II. Would love to hear the thoughts of the developers, and what they were going for on each level they worked on.
The interesting thing about High Impact Games is that this studio consisted of former R&C employees, including the character designers of the original Ratchet (Rest in Peace) AND Jak and Daxter employees. And that's exactly how I would describe The Lost Frontier. It plays partly like an R&C but just packaged as a J&D game. On the other hand, I would also describe Size Matters, although it is not so noticeable there (apart from the difficulty level of the game😂😂). But I don't blame the developers for the fact that The Lost Frontier was a complete failure in my eyes. All the blame clearly lies with Naughty Dog. But instead of making up for their mistake and giving the fans a worthy finale, they prefer to hushed it up. No, it's better to create a new franchise from scratch and at the same time completely cannibalize TLoU (It's kind of ironic that this franchise, which was supposed to be a J&D game, helped Naughty Dog to a huge success...). My hopes now lie on Ruben Fleischer, who says he is working on a J&D movie, and Tom Holland, who said in an interview that he would like to do J&D as the next video game adaptation. The only thing that helps is to pray...
Jak 2 Hero Mode: Destroy Tanker Ship THE hardest mission in the entire game. There's no way to cheese it, and the success rate is largely dependent on luck.
I am an OG Jak vet. Jak 2 is my favorite game, but IMO jak 3 is more fun. Funny enough, I never really struggled on the slums mission. I just run, roll, and long jump all the way to the end. But that Errol race to the coliseum? 🤬🤬🤬 took me a whole week.
Circumstances led me to only ever owning the original and 3. I played the og almost religiously I was obsessed, and the next one I played was 3. I wasn’t even sure I was playing this right game I would have never believed it if it didn’t have Daxter still being..well Daxter lol
I loved Jak and Daxter but I never finished it, I definitely preferred Jak 2, never played Jak 3, Jack X and The Lost Frontier. Daxter was good fun, enjoyed it a lot
I miss playing videogames completely. But, Jak and Daxter was the most fun I ever had. I remember when it first came out. I was happy I got it. It came with the PS2 when the console first came out. My parents brought that and I was super happy. Jak 2 was another story. I got the demo because I was so excited. ❤🎉
if they make a mature jak and daxter game with graphics like the concept art you showed it would be a hit!!! have us move around a big open world like in 2 and 3 but just add more detail and improve the movement even further. Kinda like how they changed the game mechanics for god of war.
if you want to play the game on unofficial platforms, I would highly recommend OpenGOAL, a custom engine aiming to reverse engineer the GOAL scripting language to run the entire Jak trilogy. TPL is almost 100% complete and progress on Jak 2 is going smoothly.
Wasn't there 1 more Jak game that was entirely the flying bits? I remember playing it, you bought different aircraft with scrap you got from destroying sky pirates
I had strict parents growing up, so anything rated T for Teen was off the table until I was older. I absolutely loved The Precursor legacy and always begged my parents to let me play the sequels. I tried to buy Jak II once by covering the rating on the cover at Gamestop, but my mom still saw it and said no lol. Years later I'm an adult and finally played Jak II... And it was aight. I love the first one so much more, and I feel like the charm of the first game was destroyed by making it dark and gritty and giving Jak guns. I preferred the collect-a-thon open world platformer vibe of the first game. Looking around for Power Cells and doing crazy side quests to get them was honestly so much fun, and that vibe was gone in the sequel. Maybe I would've liked it better if I played it as a kid and had the nostalgia factor. Idk

Problem is you can do it early and suffer and most people do it that way
For some reason dark daxter reminds me of the werehog from sonic unleashed in a way
Great video for a great saga! For someone who is interested, you can still play Jak X online, the game has a server with frequent players
Who else hopes he does "I played every Sly Cooper game" and "I played every Ratchet and Clank game" videos?
Jak and daxter the precursor legacy was such a blast from the past of how games have evolved since 2001
if I were to play through the series again, I think I'd mostly skip 2. A couple of those clips of the tricky camera angles brought back some extremely frustrating memories lol.
This series was my childhood. Got a precursor orb tattooed on my forearm when I turned 18. Would I get it again now that I’m 25? Probably not but these games are the GOAT haha
There's definitely worse tattoos you could get lmao that's actually really cool!
I'm confused.
Why aren't you famous yet when you make such awesome content?
Let's blame youtube algorithm
😭
@@donovanhadley2209 and Zoomers, they prefer 15 second videos
@Kimarnic
they often watch shorts
@@mr.dumbum8209 Ahh yes one of the worst features of TH-cam. I really hate those. The aspect ratio is awful everything is awful about them
Jak X has always been my beloved and always has. Also failed to mention, you can perfect boost the miller second you GO.
But the average player isn't going to realize that 😂
@@Niosai I just used the hoverboard on the docks.
The hard parts in Jak 2 are a mix of power through and a careful moving forward
Jak 3 so much nostalgia
Jak and Dexter all 3 games deserves remakes and the treatment Spyro and crash got with there remakes
Would definitely play all these games as long as I get to hear Daxter's dialog 😂😂😂
Love the shit Niosai!
was it js reviews?
@@caylobbailey5149 good call. Niosai did a way better job though. They had many of the same points but it didn't take Niosai 3 hours to make them.
If you see this Niosai, thank you for knowing how to be concise and stay on track. I get excited every time I'm surprised by a new video of yours. Feel like I'm watching a band play shows before they get huge.
@@caylobbailey5149 seriously, great job spotting that. I had to go check the name just to be sure.
@@Facebones2391 You do realise the other video is a compilation of three different videos right, hardly a fair comparison
@@MintyCoffee I do realize and he could have done it all in one go. I watched the videos. He didn't have to do it how he chose to.
Jak 2 was the first video game that made me throw a controller in rage 🤣 I got stuck on that mission at the strip mine where you needed the hover board to throw in those bombs on the eco devices.
Racing Erol through the city while hitting all the rings was also BS too.
Those 2 missions are bullshittt. Lol it's a love hate relationship with jak 2
I grew up on the first game! Great video!
Sly Cooper has some pretty similar vibes to this is say. That would be awesome to see.
Jak and Daxter TPL is my Breath of the Wild back then.
Struggling with the jak 2 timed bomb mission on the hover board. With the difficulty of the levels you don’t really get the satisfaction of completing it, more so relief that you don’t have to continue doing the level over and over again and can actually finish the storyline 😭
I’m so glad people still love this game and are still active in the fandom.
I totally forgot it's not Jak II Renegade in other regions
Supposedly Jak II was hard in some points was because people were complaining that Jak and Dexter was too easy.
I probably should try the R&C series sometime.
Jak 2 Hero Mode: Destroy Tanker Ship
THE hardest mission in the entire game.
This is a wonderful video and perfect timing too, getting back into the series and currently playing Jak II right now!
I got 100% for the Precursor Legacy in one sitting (about 7 hours, with an hour and a half being me dying to the final boss)
you did a great job on this retrospective. I enjoyed these games so much when I was a kid. Really sparked my imagination back then
The 2nd one was legendary. The 3rd one was just to easy with light eco. You literally never die.
I still remember when I got the original game with my PS2. It took me over a year to finish, but It’s probably my favorite game on the console.
This is an old trilogy so a spoiler free review just seems half baked.
Why'd you stop playing games?
@@Niosai Reality hit. I work a lot.
I had an affinity for Jak 2 and 3 when I was a child, but I definitely say I never beat either game because of the difficulty level.
if they make a mature jak and daxter game with graphics like the concept art you showed it would be a hit!!! have us move around a big open world like in 2 and 3 but just add more detail and improve the movement even further. Kinda like how they changed the game mechanics for god of war.
I miss this series I truly hope they come back to it!!! I loved playing jack and daxter would be nice if the bring it back
if you want to play the game on unofficial platforms, I would highly recommend OpenGOAL, a custom engine aiming to reverse engineer the GOAL scripting language to run the entire Jak trilogy. TPL is almost 100% complete and progress on Jak 2 is going smoothly.
the hoverboard in Jak 2 did have attack abilities though, you had to do a trick near an enemy to activate it
I loved the trilogy, got stuck in jack 2 back then so I need to replay that on an emulator when I have some time.
You can replay on ps2 or ps3 with hacks on modded consoles. That is the only way I am beating 2. Honestly 2 is a mess when it comes to difficulty.
10:30 I never noticed this 4th wall break 🤣🤣🤣 this one didn’t stand out as much as the others
Jak 3 is my fav personally
Why's that?
@@Niosai I just feel like it was the coolest game out of all 3
I just did a full 100% walkthrough of Jak and Daxter in one sitting lol
Wasn't there 1 more Jak game that was entirely the flying bits? I remember playing it, you bought different aircraft with scrap you got from destroying sky pirates
Great, well-rouded and unbiased review. Thanks mate
Appreciate that :)
Idk
Great vid cant wait for your take on Sly and Ratchet
I still play this game to this day lol can’t wait for the remaster or the movie to come out man this game deserves it so much
this guy plays everything and thank you for giving more recognition for old games giving a sub
I personally think the first one was the best and most unique. Had the most color and maps were just beautiful
