The best compass I've ever used has been the Suunto RA-69, which I still have and use as my main compass, sadly no longer manufactured. My two backups are a Recta "match-box' compass and a small , Silva compass. All of them are luminous.You can't compromise on quality, especially for yourself. Agree with you Doug, the small button compasses never have great reliability and will let you down when you need it most. Great educational video for those starting out in the great outdoors .

I have the Suunto MC-2G USGS version. Suunto are a super high quality compass made in Finland. Fantastic compasses. They’re very sensitive as well. Silva make a global version now as well. I’ll stick with with Suunto. Ideally we should have three high quality compasses when out and about. 1 is the main compass 2 is the backup 3 is the backup for when 1 is broken or lost. When you have one you have none, when you have two you have one.
I had a solid brass button compass 🧭 once for years and years and I never knew the brand name of it but it could be unscrewed and taken apart to clean 🫧 it and it didn't have any liquid in it just air and you could see the magnet 🧲 alignment marks to make sure the magnet 🧲 hadn't changed position on the bottom of the face and it was the absolute best most accurate button compass 🧭 I've ever seen but unfortunately I ended up losing it during a move somewhere and was never been able to find another one like it since. I'd give a hundred dollars to have that compass 🧭 back! I was thinking about using the face and bearing needle from a reasonably good plastic button compass 🧭 and machining out a housing with screw on bezel from solid brass with a watch crystal just like that one I had. I bet you could get rich selling a superior quality button compass 🧭 like that today with 100% quality control on the manufacturing!

I'll chime in with the others that like Suunto. I've had Silva compasses and find that they develop bubbles over time but haven't had that issue with Suunto or Brunton. The Mecgear (not sure about spelling) brass compasses seem okay for a button style but I don't have one so can't personally recommend. My wife and I went out our usual weekend woodlands walk we went every weekend only one time we had a snow storm we were so confident we knew the way we didn't take our mobile phone within a half hour all the trails were covered with snow and everything looked so different it took us a few hours before we found our way back to the car Alec from Scotland

My grandfather's 1st wife (who tragically died young) was a Scottish immigrant, so I grew up hearing about the culture, and some uncles have a Scottish accent. 👍👍👍 I've got a little Button Compass hanging on my Day Pack Shoulder Strap. It is pretty accurate. I test it regularly at home from a 'fixed point' indicating North. Where I live, the Declination is +3° 2' so pretty close to True North. However, It is just there to give me a general direction NSEW .. handy for going off and out of sight of the trail to take a leak / rustle up some grub / whatever and then getting back thereon. For more serious work, I have a proper compass. This little compass also comes in handy during my infrequent forays to the City (which, being 'Historic European' has nothing even close to a street 'grid' pattern). .. and specifically areas therein that I am not familiar with.

As mentioned previously, I use it only for 'general direction' .. to prevent me inconveniently going North instead of South 😏 and would never trust Body and Soul in cases when more accurate Map / Compass Land Navigation is essential to preserve the fore-mentioned. Good Advice! I have some cheaper ones, such as Coleman that work, but I also have a Suunto, if I'm out of my known areas. The cheaper ones are good backups as you say
In a vehicle filled with magnetic speakers, copper wire with current running through it I think liquid filled is the least of your worries. That’s why aircraft magnetic compasses are checked and deviation tagged.
Hi Doug thanks for the heads up on those cheapie compasses, I have a couple of the older Silva compass, seem to be still accurate when matched whith other types, I see some comments that Silva are not what they used to be, probably made in China like nearly everything else these days,lol. I purchased a 10 pack of button oil filled compasses. When I set them all on the table they all point different directions. It’s almost funny. I just did a search for air filled button compasses. Same price for 10. After your review I have much higher hope for these. Trying to build 10 survival kits for $100. So only $10 for each kit.

I got a bunch of those and was able to re magnetize them using a really strong magnet. But I don’t trust them at all because I have no idea what would cause them to get magnetically screwed up again.
That is what they said about the challenger space shuttle. But it was 36 degrees at launch which caused seals to leak. Now that I understand how an oil filled compass works I’m just going to stay away from them.

The story of the hiker that got his hand stuck permanently under a boulder and only had a dull crappy pocket knife enters my brain a lot when ordering equipment. So I’m going to go get a dozen air filled compasses.
I build kits to give to other people. So I go extremely cheap. But I give them a list of what to upgrade. I think the compass is going to be the first on that list.

I like the one I used in my infantry days here in Canada. Those button compasses don’t seem easy to use like the military ones.

I bought a bunch of Chinese compasses off eBay. One said south was north because it was magnetized on the wrong side
