I saw Derek with Tony Macalpine in Philly at the Troc 20 years ago. Tony and Derek signed the back of my new born daughters photo. Though that was the best.
You are a KILLER guitar player!! Derek is actually the one who got me into effects pedals and synth. Once I watched his TH-cam channel, there was no going back. Anyways, I know Derek is probably really busy, but if you get a minute please tell him that a guy named Ben Breed says hello! Thanks Ron!
So I’m several weeks behind, but I finally picked this up and listened through the other day. I listen to most music where Derek is a full band member (basically everything he’s done in the past 20 years except for BCC who I may get round to someday). This is probably the best album Derek has recorded since Mythology. It is that good. Every track is exciting, and so many of them have memorable riffs and motifs. Whilst there is an explicit cover track I don’t think any of the original music sounds like anything Derek has recorded before; it’s all new and fresh and great. Dragonfly and Octopus Pedigree are the standouts for me so far. Derek is one of the best at stuffing as many great players as he can on to a single record, and this one fits the bill as always. It always amazes me how he writes diverse music and uses different players, and yet the record is a cohesive listening experience. Planet X is one of my top three favourite albums ever, and can’t be dislodged as my favourite Derek solo record. Inertia and Mythology compete for second place, and you can add this one to the competition 100%. It’s going on repeat play for sure.
My god. More documentaries like this one, please. This is the best way to enjoy/study/work with big label releases. Best music thing in 2020, for sure.
Love it! Zak Wilde is way better than I thought he was. I remember he played an Andy James solo. And Zak sounded better. Incredible! One of the most versatile keyboard players in the business.
Derek, this release is on high rotation at the Picha house. And the louder, the better! Pesadelo is the perfect ending to this exciting group of tunes. This piece is incredible on all fronts. Such an unorthodox drum part, combined with Tony's ominous bass, and of course, your dreamy Rhodes. Then, Kiko just WRECKS the joint with his INTENSE guitar judo! Chops mean NOTHING without a great song and FEEL. This tune checks all of the boxes! Keep up the great work!!!
Octopus Pedigree bringing those Planet X vibes! We absolutely love Planet X and those albums Derek, please never forget about that side of you. You and Virgil are brothers from other mothers
Thank you Derek for another masterpiece. Great to see al these amazing players and co-writing and producing with Simon. He’s an amazing player and engineer!
Ive said it before ill say it again, kevin may have had the melody, jordan may have the chops, but derek has the VIBE. Amazing keyboardist love his groove
ow, near at the end, that guy with a spannish guitar and you with the rhodes..., sounds really beautifull, like mahavishnu or soft mahine, sounds so good..., cant wait man...., thaks for the vieos...., always xcite me to see simon playing....
Documentaries are always a great thing to watch and making of albums are my favorite kind. Even better when they involve my favorite musicians! Fucking awesome!
Great album! Love the Tony Franklin grooves especially. My first Derek Sherinian album outside of BCC. Reminds me of Jeff Beck at his best (the Blow by Blow era) Very well done! Edit: After several listens, my favorite track is Pesadelo. Outstanding!
I am not derek's fan of his music (except when he was in DT), but after disecting this album, song by song, note by note, I trully beleive this is a wonderful and creative prog album. Probably top 3 of 2020's best albums!! very very well done with wonderful contribution from master musicians, which Derek capitalized for his own and their evolutions...waiting for the next one!!
While I agree mostly with what you say, I just realized that with artists like Derek and all the other guys that play or played with him, I follow what they do for while and then I turn them off. It's justt the opposite of what I do with my favorites from 70's and somewhat 80's. I keep coming back to them, and that music never stops being interesting not me. I think I figured why. With this (and other similar) music, even after several listens, I simply cannot remember anything that has been played. No hooks, no licks, no memorable solos, because gives up the strong melodie aspect in favor of technique skills wizardry. Why is it that I can't wait for solos in Deep Purple's No,No,No or in their more famous tracks? Why is it that I get chills when listening to Jericho, Jericho for probably thousand times now and never get bored by their music even if it's not as skilled as what Derek & Co. do here? I think the artists in 70's were more skilled in creating very strong hooks and they always tried (and often succeeded) to record tracks with very melodic central theme - even as their music was highly technical. Yes, today's rock artists are technically more sophisticated. But do they make more interesting records? For technical skill bugs, perhaps. Having said that, I am a huge fan of Angra's Temple Of Shadows that is a perfect balance between highly skilled and very melodic and memorable music. There are many parts on that album you hook you into loving the central motive of most tracks.
Derek ironically has been putting out the best guitar albums since Black Utopia. He is obviously an amazing player himself but he's got this way at bringing out the best in all of the monsters he plays with.
with so many great releases in 2020 (including SoA, which Derek is in), I thought I may not be getting this one...Outside of Dream Theater and his collabs with Mike Portnoy, I have never gotten into Derek's music...however, seeing all the clips and videos for "The Phoenix," I did not hear one weak song in the bunch. The material and the players sound great! My respect for Derek has gone up a boatload, just based on the diversity and finesse of this album. I think I know what my next purchase will be :-D
...I don't understand how Ron That is not a household name... So talented! Like Vai. Plays tunes..Then played with G n' R...for God's sake! Still relatively underground
So, how stupid am I to NOT KNOW that Simon Phillips is the drummer on JP songs like Let us Prey/Call for the Priest and Dissident Aggressor? I've only listened to it for oh, I dunno, let's say, 40 years. Sometimes, it takes quite a while to put all the pieces together. Well, maybe not 40 years, but....
Love this album. Don't know why Derek keeps taking cheap digs at Dream Theater members. He's moved on and been successful since then. This is my favourite album of 2020
A pleasure to be on this album! Thank you Derek :D
Thanks for existing
🙏🙏🙏Thank YOU!! #BumbleBadAss

Derek Sherinian and Alex Argento, just a couple of modern rock keyboardists with incredible 'guitaristic' sense in their playing.
Great album! Hope Simon and Derek continue collaborating in future albums and hope to see them live sometime in the future!
