The machine gun skeleton archers are a bug that occurs on modern hardware. Iirc, their attack animation was tied to the frame rate. You can make them act normal by throttling the frame rate I believe.

Yeah, it wouldn't even run without it (at least on steam). Even then it took like an hour of messing with it, so I'd say go with the gog version over steam.
