Such a unique sound. Still fresh today. Also female vocals, which is not that common in rock/metal. Really fits their sound.
I'm completely addicted to this band right now. Absolutely phenomenal metal, best I've heard in many years [life long metal fan, 40+ years old]. This song is fantastic, not remotely too 'experimental' as is being said here.
This is one that really grows on you as you listen to it repeatedly. Not saying it SHOULDN'T hook you immediately, just that this one grew on ME. Whatever. I'm not a Sleep Token Stan, I just think this one is very "ear-worm-y".
I had to go back and listen to this song a second time before I could make sense of its unorthodox structure. They are very talented and creative musicians. The lyrics are also really good. Thanks G&R for introducing me to something new.
So far, I like what I’ve heard. The other songs I’ve sampled have more of a conventional flow to them than “The Summoning”. The vocals, lyrics and instrumentation are excellent. I like the chord progressions and love when the heavy riffs come in. The drummer is amazing and very musical. His fills are great, especially when he starts reeling off one after another. This stuff is right up George and Ryan’s alley. They really should hear more from this band. So far, I’ve listened to “Alkaline”, “Hypnosis”, “The Offering”, “The Love You Want” and “Atlantic”. I’m going to continue going through their catalog and look forward to hearing more of their songs.

Post-metal is very different from what you're thinking it is. Post-metal is the long, drawn out, powerful chords with a slowly evolving theme. Bands like Isis, Cult of Luna, Russian Circles. Mostly atmospheric instrumentals, not so much with complex riffs (that's a Math Rock or Prog Rock feature)
This song is kinda unique in that it is their most complex track they’ve released out of their entire catalogue.. got to see these guys tour in the States this last summer and was completely blown away by their live show. Instant fan and cant wait to see where they go.
This channel and review channels similar to this are incredibly important for the metal genre (and most genres tbf). You guys keep it real and give a perspective that a lot of artists otherwise wouldn't get; genuinely well thought out criticism. There's a good few reaction channels that I enjoy but they're almost all hype-manning the music, which I enjoy but I don't imagine is all that helpful to the actual artist beyond an ego boost, which in fairness anyone who puts out well crafted music deserves.
The quintessential Sleep Token sound for me, and where I fell completely in love with the music, was their track The Offering - I encourge you guys to check it out :D
Might wanna edit the statement here bud. Remove the “than”. Because that turns it into a negative statement. It doesn’t look like that’s how you meant it. Because we all know Sleep Token deserves all the recognition in the world! So my guess would be a typo lol
Vessel (the lead vocalist) is an amazing talent and if you like this you will dig his vocals throughout. I'd suggest the piano version of Bloodsport for really hearing him pour out the emotions.
If you guys liked this, definitely do more songs from them, they have a fairly varied catalog. They borrow from a lot of genres. I’m so happy they are starting to blow up. Went from about 200k monthly listeners on Spotify to well over a million in about a week and a half. Been cool to watch.
To stay within the same vehicle of expression limits creativity. Post Metal and or Avante Garde Metal in itself is the fusion of many genres and experimentation is primordial. Music should be celebrated regardless of genre.
The thing about this song is that it is in every way a slight departure from sleep tokens “usual” sound. They’ve never been this heavy and the ending is something no one saw coming.
So glad you guys did this song! I literally just heard this song and band yesterday and loved it. The more I hear it the more I love it. Take a listen to Aqua Regia from them that was also just released!
I love your analysis of this tune -- and all of the stuff you do. I'm just getting into this band and this was my first listen to this song too. Thanks for taking your audience along! I'm a musician and crave those transitions, odd-meter and other complexities. I'm 52 and have been studying/composing playing music since I was 12, so I've heard a lot of music. And my musical brain loves the complexity. But I also love a filthy funk in-the-pocket groove and crave that too. Snarky Puppy is a favorite. Duke Ellington said (?) "There are two types of music -- good and bad." Hence, there's something for me to love in all genres.
This was my first dive into Sleep Token, you need to really dig into their entire catalog! It’s like reading only one chapter of a book, you don’t get the full scope without their other songs
You absolutely nailed it, I think Sleep Tokens mission from the outset was to prove you could make heavy music more accessible - so they've always included almost poppy elements. No one knows who any of them are, especially the singer. There was loads of speculation that it was someone like Hozier (it obviously isn't), but a lot of folks were certain it was a pop singers secret heavy side project. I even saw some folks speculating it was secretly Ed Sheeran 😂 So yeah, the pop influence is there. And what's interesting is that even some of the most pop hating metal heads I know, absolutely love Sleep Token. So they've managed to do it without alienating the more metal crowd. Massive kudos to them.
To sum this song up and the band in general, the are very similar to Deftones, heavy, soft, sexy, dreamscape and down right awesome. But yeah... not the song i would of recommended for you guys to start on. This is an eclectic mix for a single song. Most of Sleep Token is multiple genres over an album not one song. This was them flexing and showing how they can make it all come together in one song. Check out "Altantic" "The Love You Want" "Alkaline" or "High Water". PS: Ryan, those are high pitch screams not growls brother.
These types of songs where things switch up are great. You have to listen to them multiple times to get the groove they’re in. So Ryan, give it 2-3 more times
Sleep Token has a staggering level of stylistic range and musical ability. Vessel’s singing is just unbelievably great. And their drummer is one of the best currently out there. Check out ‘Jaws’ if you really want to be blown away. I suspect you guys would really dig that one. Keep in mind that metal is actually a really small aspect to the incredibly diverse rage of musical styles they integrate into their music. There’s also quite a bit of R&B, Pop, Ambient, etc. throughout their catalog.
this is the purest unique band i have ever gotten into. i love different and this band is beautiful. i want to see them live. their music is fkn awesome

This song took a few listens for me to appreciate. Aqua Regia and Granite are worth reviewing/reacting to. They’re both incredible. It’s worth noting that these guys are anonymous. People have made some good guesses, but no one really knows who they are for sure.
Oh my GOD!! Finally, I have been waiting for you to react to Sleep token on this channel since I started watching. You NEED to listen to The Offering, it’s their biggest track and their best by a mile, which is saying a LOT with the likes of Alkaline, Higher, Gods etc… You will not be disappointed!

I know this is a very difficult thing to grasp, but I'm certain if you put on your big boy thinking cap and focus really hard on this basic concept, you might just be able to do it and keep your mouth shut when people don't ask
I’m just here for their reaction to the last bit. 😂
Been waiting for you to hit these guys for so long!! Each song is so different.. the musicianship is so amazing..but I hope it's a rabbit hole you guys explore!
This band is the most amazing band on this earth, guys…the talent is oozing out of these guys…give ALL of their stuff a good listen…you will not be disappointed!
So true...they keep getting better. Peace and love.
I was waiting on y’all’s video for this! I’ve recently fallen in love with them and can’t get enough. This song is perfect.
Can’t stop listening to this song. His voice and the transitions are amazing.
Love your breakdown of this song. This record as a whole is a masterpiece.
I become more addicted to every song the more I listen to them. The rest of their new tracks they just dropped are really popular as well. Chokehold, granite and aqua regia are my new absolute favorites.
Everyone always compliments the singer, which, don't get me wrong his vocals are fantastic. But who else is appreciating the drummer!?! Like damn, those fills are clean!
One of those bands where almost every song I've heard from them sounds different. Such a unique band.
Wow, this was a really spot on, thoughtful analysis. I think you guys nailed it.
Aqua Regia and Granite are the two singles released after this one. They are much more up your alley, and they are definitely amplifying the sexy trend lol
The Birthday Massacre is a band that died with the phase it was apart of, but they are so much more. Under-Appreciated. Try the songs Always, Kill The Lights, Goodnight, Lovers End. Such a unique sound. Still fresh today. Also female vocals, which is not that common in rock/metal. Really fits their sound.
Oh man, haha my hometown! My mom worked with one of the members sisters for years
Such a great band.
Welcome 🙏 let me know what you think of their other work
So far, I like what I’ve heard.
@@colinmanderson2185 thanks for sharing, so happy you're enjoying it ❤️. I've been listening to them non-stop for about two weeks now and feel/ thought the same. Keep going!
@@domesticated_kat I'll add to that list as I'm a new convert also. The Night Does Not Belong To God & Distractions
they don’t keep going and THAT’S the brilliance! You want that ONE MORE piece. Just one more! But they cut. So, now I gotta go back because they hooked me. GD genius!
And Neurosis, the creators
Just found your channel. Love the ST vids. I think their music has something for everyone, which is one of the reasons I love them.
This song is kinda unique in that it is their most complex track they’ve released out of their entire catalogue.. (so far) but give it a few listens and it’s REAAALLY not as disjointed as you think at first. Nonetheless, I HIGHLY recommend going both back in their music to old(er) stuff, as well as forward to the three songs they’ve released also from this upcoming album! You 100% will NOT be disappointed! You’re so close here but it’s a challenging listen for your first with them! The rest is much easier
I love your guys' breakdown of the song! Subscribed 😁
Y'all have got to check out Aqua Regia or Granite by Sleep Token. I promise y'all will not be disappointed.
got to see these guys tour in the States this last summer and was completely blown away by their live show. Instant fan and cant wait to see where they go.
All the tracks they've released this month have been amazing and genre bending, hope you guys do Aqua Regia
So glad you guys got this request, these guys are different but I am so happy you got to hear this.
This channel can help a lot to Sleep Token gain more recognition!
I'm not saying they need, but it's a nice plus to their exposition! :)
Might wanna edit the statement here bud. Remove the “than”. Because that turns it into a negative statement. It doesn’t look like that’s how you meant it. Because we all know Sleep Token deserves all the recognition in the world! So my guess would be a typo lol
@@twall91 Thanks :)
That song was definitely knocked out of the park. I absolutely LOVE that song on that album.
No genre can encapsulate Sleep Token. Bottom line, It’s art. It’s soul healing and it’s definitely a BANGER. 🤘
I was WAITING for this reaction. Love you guys.
Vessel (the lead vocalist) is an amazing talent and if you like this you will dig his vocals throughout. I'd suggest the piano version of Bloodsport for really hearing him pour out the emotions.
Gives me goosebumps thinking about it. Such a beautiful stripped down verstion of the song.
So true. The stripped back version is pure emotional realise
Oh man the piano version of Hey Ya! Brought me to tears. Love it so much
The last 1:30 of this song snatches my soul
If you guys liked this, definitely do more songs from them, they have a fairly varied catalog. They borrow from a lot of genres. I’m so happy they are starting to blow up. Went from about 200k monthly listeners on Spotify to well over a million in about a week and a half. Been cool to watch.
Finally you guys have a collection to be amazed with
My favourite song of theirs so far, I hope they make more heavier tracks like this as I couldn't get into their slower more electronic poppy songs.
Super agree
Accord
To stay within the same vehicle of expression limits creativity. Post Metal and or Avante Garde Metal in itself is the fusion of many genres and experimentation is primordial. Music should be celebrated regardless of genre.
Never would’ve thought I’d see you guys react to sleep token! Really cool to see you guys expand your channel 💯
The thing about this song is that it is in every way a slight departure from sleep tokens “usual” sound. They’ve never been this heavy and the ending is something no one saw coming.
I’ve had all of their new singles on repeat!
Ryan started commenting on the transitions early in the video, and i was like "damn, they havent even gotten to the funk section yet" 😂
Thank you for covering one of the most incredible bands out there
So glad you guys did this song! I literally just heard this song and band yesterday and loved it. The more I hear it the more I love it. Take a listen to Aqua Regia from them that was also just released!
Appreciate y'all checking them out. I think Alkaline is a song by them you'll really like
I think the disjointed transitions exceed expectations and therefore provides something that truly stands out.
This new Hozier song slaps.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that hears it.
Yeah ❤ hozier is great I think they might consider a collaboration with him at some point
NO WAYYYYYY 😭😭😭
Did not expect them to jump on this one anytime soon tbh
fvkin loved this a super lot. unbelievable musical content. so unique 😍😍😍
I just discovered ST a few days ago. Great band. I've been playing drums for over 30 years and I love a tight rhythm section! Great band!
There’s also quite a bit of R&B, Pop, Ambient, etc. throughout their catalog.
how Lost in Vegas gonna finally do Sleep Token and they don't even mention the drumming once? II is the best out there right now, check out Hypnosis
Made my day with this reaction
You can’t pin down their genre & that’s what I love about them 🤘🏻🖤
this is the purest unique band i have ever gotten into. i love different and this band is beautiful. i want to see them live. their music is fkn awesome
Finally getting into sleep token! The best kept secret in music right now
how are yall so talented when it comes to breaking music down no matter the genre, its honestly crazy
You really gotta start with the sundowning album to really get sleep token. It’s felt like a journey since discovering the song “higher” a few years ago. Super cool to see how they’re evolving.
YES! I knew y'all were gonna hit this joint!
Vessel has one of the best voices I've heard in a very long time.
Listening to this song, it sounded like love. When he said, “It sounds like an awakening”, that moment in the song felt like when two lovers make love in the purest sense. The feeling of bliss and love and pure happiness in that moment. It was amazing the way I felt the song in that way.
You NEED to listen to The Offering, it’s their biggest track and their best by a mile, which is saying a LOT with the likes of Alkaline, Higher, Gods etc…
You will not be disappointed!
Here comes "Dad Rock" Ryan complaining about too many changes and odd time signatures...
Well butter my bread, not even halfway through and I'm thinking I should take up a career as a future-teller. ☠
Kind of weird how after all these years he still has issues “catching a groove”
Well he still loves Gojira tho
