    I think Sleep Token are the freshest metal act to come out in years! The genre was definitely in need of some revamping.

    • @carryingfire286
      @carryingfire286 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Hard disagree. They sound super contrived and cliche to me. Its that shaky, cliche voice that pops up on every electronic pop song now. Some cliche, uninspired de-tuned guitars pop up with a piano then drop out and back to the cliche pop voice. I really dont see anything special or unique going on here at all.
      IMO this is regressing metal. Metal is one of the most creative, exploratory genres out there. Having a big band who minimizes themselves to big poppy hooks and cliche riffs isnt the "revamping we need in the genre" IMO.

    Definitely a band worth coming back to. This song doesn't showcase it so much but the drumming on tracks like The Offering or Alkaline is really amazing. This song is more chaotic than a lot of their work, it's by far their most experimental. This was my first dive into Sleep Token, you need to really dig into their entire catalog! It’s like reading only one chapter of a book, you don’t get the full scope without their other songs

    This channel and review channels similar to this are incredibly important for the metal genre (and most genres tbf). You guys keep it real and give a perspective that a lot of artists otherwise wouldn't get; genuinely well thought out criticism. There's a good few reaction channels that I enjoy but they're almost all hype-manning the music, which I enjoy but I don't imagine is all that helpful to the actual artist beyond an ego boost, which in fairness anyone who puts out well crafted music deserves.

    I'm completely addicted to this band right now. Absolutely phenomenal metal, best I've heard in many years [life long metal fan, 40+ years old]. This song is fantastic, not remotely too 'experimental' as is being said here.

    To sum this song up and the band in general, the are very similar to Deftones, heavy, soft, sexy, dreamscape and down right awesome.
    But yeah... not the song i would of recommended for you guys to start on. This is an eclectic mix for a single song. Most of Sleep Token is multiple genres over an album not one song. This was them flexing and showing how they can make it all come together in one song.
    Check out "Altantic" "The Love You Want" "Alkaline" or "High Water".
    PS: Ryan, those are high pitch screams not growls brother.

    As a fan since their first record, this is the first time we've heard them approach a song this way. The throughline is usually WAY easier to follow, but I think the fans have been eager for this. Please check out "the love you want" off their second record (I think I've been screaming for this a long time lol)

    Sleep Token has such a huge variety of sounds across their catalog, it would be interesting to see what you guys would think of other songs of theirs. This song definitely is one of their most experimental, as well as their heaviest. Their newest song, Aqua Regia, has some r&b, pop and jazz influence, and is vastly different. Like most of their tracks though, it's very hooky and an enjoyable listen!

  • @fyndor

    This band I think is definitely reaching out to a broader audience. Anecdotally, I posted on my FB feed the video for Chokehold and talked about how enamored I am with that song, and my sister's friend said she loved Sleep Token. This girl is a choir singer and I seriously doubt she has any other band in her playlist that would be considered metal, based on what I know about her while I was in HS band with her. She is who I talk to when I want to ask questions about singing, and I have a feeling that this vocalist plus some of the more "palatable" / poppy instrumentation you find in the songs allowed her to like a band that also mixes in metal. With her being a singer herself, I bet the vocalist just sucked her right in. The vibe of Chokehold sucked me in, but also the vocalist has just one of the best voices in rock I have ever heard.

    Sleep Token have such a wide range of sound. Hearing one song you still don't know Sleep Token. Gotta listen to a few songs to really understand that they're truly doing whatever the hell they want. I love when a band sounds like they ain't just playing music to play music, but because it's what they were put on this Earth to do, and Sleep Token feels like that. Everything works so well together, and the vocals are amazing

    I was turned on to this band last year and this they’ve become one of my favorites. The mystery of the lead singer, the prog metal/ ethereal / pop sound is so cool! They cover Whitney Houston I wanna dance with dance somebody on their first album. Bloodsport (from the room below) is one of my favorite. I think you would be really surprised by it.

    The song reminds me of Ayreon "The Day That The World Breaks Down" in the sense it has a vast variety of vocal technique as well as instrumentation/genre. It's got great cleans, cool high notes, rough growls and screams along with some heaviness, an emotional solo, proggyness, and some groovy jazzy/bluesy type sound.
    Definitely recommend checking out "The Day that the World Breaks Down" for some of the best vocalists, musicianship and a mix of everything.
