    Hey guys, this is a really special video. I lay out a completely unique and unheard of road map to go from being a complete novice to a highly paid sound design professional. No gimmicks. If you're a beginner or previously unsuccessful sound designer, editor, or recordist... this video is gold for you.
    Listen in on my talk with a young and aspiring sound designer as I answer some of the most common questions newcomers have for the field. Around the 8 minute mark I begin laying out a straightforward path to becoming a senior sound designer much faster than the "traditional" path of college to internships to the long and slow climb up "the ladder".
    I highly recommend listening to the entire talk though as I give tons of pointers and mindset advice that all came from my personal journey of having to try and fail on many levels. This way you can avoid the mistakes I made and expedite your journey to the top of the industry.
    This is a new series I call "Tools, Theories, and Mindset". I'll be regularly making videos like this to reveal industry secrets, the tools you should learn that are actually needed (skipping the frivolous things that beginners always waste time learning only to never really need once they start their professional career) and mindset advice to make sure you're fully optimized to lead the most successful career as possible.

    After reading some of your responses to get started I’ve subscribed. I had no idea Pro Tools and Kilohearts were subscription models now. The library recommendations are great and I’m stoked for your channel. I didn’t realize how many opportunities there are in audio! Thanks for making this and for the detailed responses to your comments!

    I've went from my hometown to study physiotherapy for 3 years, while I was there I've pirated FL Studio 3.6 and composed a few songs just for fun (that was in 2009.) I quit my job 2 years ago because my income from music was bigger than my pay as a physiotherapist. I now own every piece of software that I use, including FL Studio 20 lol 6 months ago I've started focusing on game music and SFX, and in 6 months I've increased my monthly income by 300$ only because I didn't wait too much to sell my work. I am not a fast learner, and although I watch many tutorials I can't always keep up precisely, I drift away easily to my own way of doing things. The point is that you need to be hardheaded, a hustler :D I could write a book about all the ways I've sold my music even though it's still not professional enough for big companies.

    Hi Braden great video, what tools do you recommend? You mentioned libraries plugins, whats your recomendation on that ?

    • @bradenparkes
      @bradenparkes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      in the beginning, buy libraries that fit the projects you're working on. if you don't have projects lined up, then save $ and buy basic intro libraries from boom, soundmorph, etc. plugins it's good to start with Waves, Sound Toys, and eventually moving on to GRM, Uhbik, etc. in my videos I show a lot of plugins and libraries so scan through those and you'll see!

    The audio job market is FLOODED! Flooded, flooded, flooded. For every job, there are 1000+ applicants. It's insane. Every kid with Garage Band on their computer is trying to be a Sound Designer. I used to give elaborate advice to people who would ask me how to get into the biz, but now I advise them against it.

    Thanks making these videos! just watched all your content last night. I recently started reading "So Good They Can't Ignore You" (Cal Newport) and it follows similar themes what you talked about by just getting really good at your craft to pursue success.
    Do you have a recommended project idea to pursue for a sound design beginner? I'm in an exploratory phase in my life and think it'd be cool to see if I make a side career (or perhaps full career?) out of sound design, editing, music production, etc. I've only have experience with music production and live sound. I only work part-time right now. I always have a hard time picking out what I like because it all sounds interesting but also overwhelming.

    • @bradenparkes
      @bradenparkes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Colly, I think a lot of people in the sound & music field can relate to what you're feeling. There are so many different niches of this industry it definitely can be hard to narrow it down early on. Usually the easiest way to do that is to get an internship and work around the people who do the different jobs, talk to them, ask them questions, and see which ones you enjoy talking about the most! That's usually a good indication of natural interest. Of course, that method is a good bit harder now during the lockdowns.
      Instead, you may just want to explore these different fields from the comfort of your own home. If so I'd follow similar advice to what I give in this video: save up money, buy the tools, and start learning & practicing in the evenings/weekends. If you're not sure between game sound design, film sound design, trailer/commercial sound design, or music production/editing/mixing for any of those genres, then you'll want to get yourself set up to try them all. This means getting ahold of Pro Tools, some decent headphones (i recommend hd600's, about $300 USD currently), a decent windows/mac computer that wont freeze up on you, some plugins (start with a simple waves bundle for mixing, for sound design you may want to add sound toys, or SnapHeap if you want a lot of plugins for a cheap $10/month subscription), and some sound libraries if you're going to be doing fx/sound design work.
      I know this sounds like a lot, and sadly this field does require these tools to properly get your foot in the door, but if you break it down into small chunks it may make it easier. For example, first month maybe you just buy a pro tools subscription and start learning pro tools as best as you can. Second month, maybe you try mixing a song in Pro Tools, etc. Every week you should be gauging your own interest and motivation to make sure you're actually interested in what you're doing, because, as I say in the video, if you can't do it on your own terms, it's going to be 5x harder doing it on someone else's terms (i.e a client, a supervisor, etc).
      Hopefully this helps, best of luck!

      @@bradenparkes thank you so much for your reply! This is such super helpful information and great guidance. My gut reaction to what you said is that with the tools/gears/plugins that I already have from music (Ableton Live Suite, sry forgot to mention that!) that I can probably just jump right in to designing sound for a scene (like the Link & Pitt one you reviewed). It's nerve-wracking to think I can just jump right in once I find some libraries but maybe that'll be best.
      I think I also really like the idea of supporting other artists so maybe I'll be able to find video/film folks or freelancers that need audio support and find a route that way. Anyways just thinking aloud now.
      Thanks again, Braden! Looking forward to your future posts. Shoutout to Dietrich too! It's so nice to see the two of your connect and how you're helping him - and that excitement he has haha. Appreciate what you're doing!

Also back then you didn’t have the tools for both learning, promoting and selling your art/craft. Of course, the socio-historical context cannot be reduced to this comment but I what I’m trying to say is that this is totally achievable if backed up by real, deep passion, motivation, persistence, a solid strategy and research, faith/confidence and good self management (in terms of habits with the full spectrum they occupy).

      @@devalah I totally understand what you're saying but it's really hard at 35, or 36, or even 30 to immediately "change" careers and pursuit one that may or may not give you dividends to pay the bills. That's the scary part. It's easy to try to motivate someonem but taking a leap of faith and not getting anywhere, at the end of the month, with rent and bills, that's the tricky part.
