  • We got our car and caravan weighed for the first time and increased our caravans weight capacity with an ATM upgrade!
    Watch this video to find out:
    - How much we were over our GVM.
    - Process for having your rig (car and van) weighed + why it’s important to know your weight.
    - How to get an ATM caravan upgrade + the process.
    - The difference between Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM), Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM), Gross Combined Mass (GCM), Tow Ball Mass (TBM) + Gross Trailer Mass (GTM).
    Massive thank you to Rod from gvmcheck and Deon from Okajaro
    (engineering and trailer plan specialist) for sharing their wealth of information with us. We can’t recommend these guys enough.
    SPECIAL OFFER ~

    A few good things to know when you go for your GVM check is to make sure you're in the car when it gets weighed, and you have a full tank of fuel. We also got weighed whilst all our water tanks and gas bottles were full.

    We are a family of four living in our caravan nomading around our beautiful home country, Australia.
    We've sold our house and most of our belongings to live a life of freedom, minimising our environmental footprint and to simplify our lifestyle. We aren't bound by a time frame and are happy just floating with the breeze (hence our name inspired by the proverb 'A rolling stone gathers no moss).
    We want to park our home on wheels at a destination and let fate do the rest!

    Congratulations on doing the checks guys, so many people don't. Not only is it a legality thing but even more importantly it is a safety issue. We also had Rod do our rig and can't recommend him highly enough.

      100% agree with you Steve! It’s something that was on our to do list for a while but since we’re getting ready to leave (again) we felt better knowing we’re compliant and safe.
      That’s awesome! A lot of people have seem to have gone through Rod. He’s great 😊

    HI Guys,
    Good informative video.
    WE have the same van as you. Ours is a 2018 Appeal 647. We had the double bunks but had the top bunk removed. Our Tow vehicle is a 2016 Prado with 2500kgs tow capacity. When we bought our Appeal we had it weighed and were shocked that the tare weight was only 1860. The ATM on our was 2230 however as our cars tow capacity was 2500 kgs we had our ATM increased to 2499 kgs to stay compliant. After fitting a second battery, Additional water tank and grey tank were still way way under and had heaps of room to play with when loading. Stray well and safe travels. Ken

    • @NoMossNomads
      @NoMossNomads  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ken, cheers mate, it’s a pretty light van and it’s awesome that the ATM can be upgraded so easily, we are looking at adding more water and battery’s as well. Safe travels to you too mate ✌🏽

    Hey guys,
    New to your channel (today) but have already watched a couple of vids :)
    How did you go with GVM upgrade with Outback Armour suspension?

    • @NoMossNomads
      @NoMossNomads  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, so the guys at outback armour have found and engineer they have worked with in order to carry out the upgrade (10% increase in GVM). Take the Ute into their shop and get it back with a mod plate; granted that it passes the brake efficiency test. Bit pricey and we didn’t actually get a chance to do it. I upgraded the brakes in the triton as well so I’m happy knowing it can handle the weight 👍🏽

    What about tow bar weight, with 2600 ATM ball weight could be 260kg. Is the tow bar on the vehicle able to accept that 260kg load????

    How did you go with the GVM upgrade on the Triton ?

  • @Brian-hq8gy
    @Brian-hq8gy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have a MQ Triton in Victoria and tried to find an engineer down here to do a GVM upgrade and couldn't find anyone who would do it. Was told the vehicle has not been "approved" or something to that effect for GVM upgrade here in Victoria...very interested to see how you go

    • @Aphony66
      @Aphony66 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tritons have one of the highest GM's in the ute class. If you need a GM upgrade of your Triton you're doing it wrong

  • @NoMossNomads
    @NoMossNomads  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It’s crazy how quickly weight adds up! Our guesstimating was a bit off 😂
    Have you gone over your van or car’s GVM? By how much? Let us know!

    • @sww82
      @sww82 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our van was 108kgs over so after watching this we called Okajaro, now we have an extra 500kg payload, thanks guys.

  • @owenkelly2580

    Your titan draws weigh approx 100kg empty. Your engine would weigh 20-30kg? Have you thought about removing the draws and replacing with cheapo Bunnings plastic ones- or swapping the two loads to bring weight closer to front axle. Those kings draws are a killer!

    • @NoMossNomads
      @NoMossNomads  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Owen, the drawers weigh 31kg each, and are far too handy to replace with something that’ll break in a few months. It is defiantly something we considered though. The tinny is non negotiable haha, but I thought about moving the engine to the back of the van. Weight distribution is great when we don’t have the van attached, it’s only an issue cause by the ball mass. Weight distribution hitch should sort that out 👍

  • @wallyj1234
    @wallyj1234 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got mine done when they were building the van. I asked why don't you do it for every van and they said so they can keep it in the lowest class of tow vehicles and their vans can be towed by more people, more sales. makes sense !

    • @NoMossNomads
      @NoMossNomads  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate, I wondered why they didn’t, i assumed it was cost on there behalf. Rod said some vans come in brand new and empty and they are over there ATM and GTM.

    Yep awesome stuff guys but because you have a Queensland mod plate does t that include all states and territories or would have been better if it was a federal plate?

    • @NoMossNomads
      @NoMossNomads  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate, QLD modplate will cover us in all states and territories. And I’m not sure what the process is for federal plates.

    • @philfoote829
      @philfoote829 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep it's all a bit too confusing thought you had to have a federal plate because it was only plated in Queensland if you sold it to someone in New South Wales then that would not be active correct me if I'm wrong any one please

    Law must be different where you guys are....I thought ALL trailers over 2 tonne needed to have TWO safety chains. Perhaps I'm mistaken?
    Also, I was surprised the GVM weigh-in bloke measured the TBM (to ball mass) by placing the scales under the jockey wheel. The jockey wheel is NOT at the correct point for measuring the TBM....think about it; elementary physics.
    Also, I would consider it to have been unsafe to have allowed you to leave there with the excess weight on the drive and too little on the steer....hope you moved some stuff around before you left.
