I think when they say that they didn't have the technology to make what they wanted to make with Metroid Dread, I actually think they were talking about AI. The AI of these robots that are hunting you and tracking you down. That stuff ain't easy to program well.

Probably, despite the scary feeling, SA-X AI isn't that good, she stop chasing you very easily in Metroid Fusion

That was my thought, too!! They probably wanted to replicate the feel of scripted SA-X encounters AND bring back open-ended exploration, but it's hard to do both. Now they got the AI to pull it off
@@ArloStuff I wouldn't buy into that idea. Nintendo wanted some nostalgia dollars and nostalgia cred. There's no reality where they couldn't create the "dread" game they wanted with the tech at the time. Don't buy into the BS hype
The fact that they actually subtitled it “Dread” is the icing on the cake. They knew that hardcore Metroid fans would know that name and that makes me happier than it should.

@@waddledottz Metroid Dread has been the working name of the sequel to Metroid Fusion since 2005.
It actually isn’t just in name. It’s a full revival of that cancelled concept.
Apparently Sakamoto in an interview clarified that not only will there definitely be more 2D Metroid games after dread, he already has a new idea in the works. Love to see that Metroid is back in the limelight

I don't know if this is mentioned in the vid or not but its good that, even though this is the conclusion to the current story, they are still going to continue Samus' adventure. Metroid wouldn't be Metroid without her.

I imagine the reason they said it's another new metroid game before revealing it was so that people don't think it's metroid prime 4 when samus appears onscreen, so people don't get disappointed or confused.

They could've not mentioned it was a Metroid game, while still saying Prime 4 is on the way. They could've said, "Metroid Prime 4 is still in development, but here's something else you may want to see." Still, you make a good point.

I saw some people during the live stream when they showed “Metroid 5” thinking that they actually skipped Metroid Prime 4 and that this was Prime 5 or something like that, so the clarification was definitely justified 😅

Can we please, please just get a 1-2 slam dunk of Dread and Prime 4, reviewing and selling well? Metroid deserves to be cemented as a household Nintendo franchise.

problem is metroid isnt a very “normie” friendly franchise, it never really holds hands, it puts all on you to figure things out, harder than most games on the market, darker stories so less mass appeal, not advertised as much, it lacks consistency in its gameplay as every new game shakes up the formula, and also its got very little in the name of direct story and sure mario doesnt have much but its much more consistent and much less experimental
I think itd be cool to expand on the franchise and have a game or 2 follow a new character or characrers with different attacks and abilities. Unless a franchise is built around that concept already we dont see it too often but whenever it happens its great
@@majintv24 it would be very interesting to expand and follow other characters, but with the Metroid series it has and always will follow Samus until she is either too old to put on the armor, or she dies.
Samus is as important to Metroid as Link is to Zelda. She is literally the only humanoid we know of that can wear and utilize the powersuit to it's full potential because of the genetic grafts she received from the Chozo, they built the armor to fit her properly. No other armor would work for a human.
Samus is the best leading lady in the Nintendo library, because she's good at her job, and she has character. I think it will take Samus being incapacitated or killed outright to have a new character take her place in the franchise, but I hope they let us play as a chozo from before Samus's life
It was interesting to see some reactions where people went "Metroid 5? Why 5?" Without seeing the title sequences of Super and Fusion, it's not common knowledge that those games are labeled Metroid 3 and 4, in the exact style they used in this trailer. That really showed me they care about the small stuff in the best way.
It's like how in Japan, Super Mario World has thr subtitle "Super Mario Bros. 4"
Also shows it's been way too long since Fusion if the mainline games aren't even known anymore being numbered

Oh yeah, Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion use the "Metroid 3/4" label during the game's start clip before going to the title screen.

I would have been happy with Metroid Prime Pinball for Switch or a 2D collection. But Dread makes me happy.. though I had my own concept in my head for a metroid that was even more expansive.. but that could be done in a Metroid 6 or even 7.

I never played a Metroid game in my life. I never cared about the franchise and mostly watched bits of gameplay from the original. But seeing as this took almost 20 years to be made I may just make this my first Metroid game.

What if EMMI is tracking the Metroid DNA in Samus? EMMI may be programmed to hunt Metroids.

Hm…if it was designed to hunt Metroids, then why weren’t they deployed sooner? The story so far would imply that these were created only after Fusion. Assuming your theory holds water, it holds significant implications for the story at large.
According to the online thing for Metroid dread, the EMMIs were made for exploring and extracting DNA. My guess is that they were sent by the federation to hunt down samus and extract the Metroid part of her DNA so they can resume their Metroid cloning program after she blew up the remaining Metroids in fusion

My jaw dropped when I saw Metroid 5, then hit the floor when I saw the word Dread
I wasnt even born yet when rumors of Dread started but somehow I must have heard about it somewhere because i felt deep down in my memory when I went through my metroid phase and completed super metroid a bunch on the wiius vc when i was about 5 or 6 I must have stumbled upon the name Metroid Dread somewhere on youtube rapidly watching metroid videos. It felt really familiar and strange and really felt like I heard it somewhere but not recently. I just feel like I really need to play this now.
I actually shouted “No f**king way!!” And got goosebumps when “METROID 5” popped up 🤘
As someone who knows next to nothing about Metroid, when I saw "Metroid 5" I was confused. But when I saw "Metroid Dread" I felt like I had heard it somewhere before. Then I heard people talking about Arlo and his reaction, so I got here and watched him die. But now I have (some) knowledge, so that's cool.

Also, back in the GameCube the storage space was a HUGE issue. The thing was more powerful than the PS2 yet the mini disks turned down a lot of developers, since they didn't wanna deal with the hassle of splitting their games into multiple pieces
You really think the AI in a game like this is going to be anything more sophisticated than a basic finite state machine? Gameplay-wise I don't see anything here that couldn't have been done on the Gamecube.

Yeah, no, I'm sorry but I seriously the AI in Dread is going to be anything so CPU intensive that a gamecube couldn't pull it off. What Sakamoto really should be saying is that at the time they didn't have the creative drive and energy to properly execute this. Super Metroid is a masterpiece but that masterpiece also came at great human cost with staff essentially living a Nintendo and not emerging until the game was done.
@@Furluge This is nonsense. First off, they couldn't have made it a GC game even if they wanted to. It was ALWAYS a strictly handheld (in this case, the DS) targeted game, just like the prior 2 games that same team made (aka "Metroid Fusion" & "Zero Mission").
Development costs & dev team requirements on the GC would have simply been way, WAAAAAY too high for Sakamoto's super small team at Nintendo R&D1 to handle (let alone even get approved by upper management) and the GC was on its way out by 2004-2005 anyways. And 1st party Wii games had even LARGER budgets + dev team sizes as those for the GC, making it even LESS feasible a possibility.
Secondly, the single-core, super low clocked IBM PowerPC CPU in the Cube was way, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY slower than even the 4-core ARM A57 setup in the Switch. It's VERY within the realm of possibility that the dynamic AI routines Sakamoto desired for the E.M.M.I's would STILL have been technologically unfeasible on even the GC without negatively impacting the rest of the game's design/quality. Only having a SINGLE CPU thread to work with is hard enough when dealing with stuff like complicated AI subroutines, let ALONE if that single thread is also crazy slow, and this was true even for that time. Both desktop CPU's like the Athlon/XP & Pentium 3/4 AS WELL as the P3 based Celeron in the OG Xbox were all EONS beyond the GC in raw CPU performance. The Cube's PS2 ass-kicking power came primarily from its custom ArtX designed "Flipper" GPU, NOT a super powerful CPU.
The GC hardware's primary strength was in pushing STOOPID amounts of simultaneous polygons on screen at once (see "Metroid Prime" or "Rogue Squadron II"), where it could even whoop the OG Xbox by a notable margin, but complicated AI routines? That's the exact kind of things that the GC struggled with & which even the otherwise slower PS2 could do better (assuming an experienced PS2 dev).
And even if it was technically possible on the Cube, getting a proper full-on 2D Metroid game greenlit for the home consoles w/ a proper home console game budget during the peak of the "Metroid Prime" era & the dawn of HD gaming would have been a COMPLETE non-starter. The massive indie led 2D gaming revival simply hadn't happened yet, as 3D gaming technology & game design was still evolving by MASSIVE leaps & bounds basically every single year.

Same here. They're *just* uncanny enough.
I also like how the EMMI look like robots that could exist in real life: they seem to be designed similarly to four-legged bots that exist in real life (e.g. Spot or BigDog), although EMMI is clearly much more flexible. As such, it's not hard to believe that it's built specifically for both maximum stability and maximum mobility--the perfect weapon to chase down an agile target like Samus.
They have that smooth chrome style. Reminds me of the music video for "All is Full of Love" by Bjork

The fact that this is a sequel 20 years in the making based on a concept the developers have been wanting to make for 15 years is just awesome. I don’t know a lot about the Metroid series but I’m so happy for Metroid fans this is really cool.

I have never wanted a video game to be made as badly as this one. I play through the entire series every year around this time, and I always get bummed when I get to Fusion, knowing that it was the last entry to an incomplete but otherwise boss series.

Arlo, as a die-hard Metroid fan, I’d love a video elaborating on your feelings toward Metroid Fusion, since it’s actually my favorite game in the series. I totally understand why many prefer Super, but for me it’s Fusion all the way
I feel exactly the same: love the Metroid series a lot, and Fusion is by far my favourite!
Fusion was dissapointing for a lot of people becuase it was the first 2d metroid that wasn't actually a metroidvania... that's why I'm even more excited for this game, knowing that it'll be the first metroidvania from the ORIGINAL metroidvania series in 27 years!
Not sure of your age, but us older Metroid fans were blown away by how Super Metroid perfected what Metroid meant at the time (and we walked uphill in the snow both ways to buy it at our local video game shop ;-) ). After experiencing that, all the hand holding that occurred in Metroid Fusion was kind of a turn off. At least that's how I felt about it. The whole concept around Metroid up thru Super Metroid was that you were alone. After the brief intros, there was zero talking in those games (that I remember, and remakes aside). No help was coming. Win or die. Then all of a sudden, in Fusion, you have this "Adam" guy telling you what to do, holding back upgrades from you, and putting a pinpoint on your map telling you exactly where to go. Oh and everything else is basically closed off until you achieve this next step of the mission. It was a guided tour of that research station. Sure, Zebes was sectioned off based on your abilities in Super Metroid, but it didn't FEEL like anything was being held back from you.
I still like Fusion. It is a fantastic game. But when I make the decision to play a Metroid game, 70% of the time, I'm gonna sink the next 3 hours into Super Metroid.
@@lukew1383 Yeah, you've pretty much summed up what makes Dread such a big deal as a return to the Metroidvania-style formula of Super. Another exciting thing about this game is that Adam returns as your ship's computer from Fusion, but this time around he's just there to give the player a bunch of lore and a few gameplay tips. You're still on your own when it comes to finding your way out of the bowels of planet ZDR.

I like the fusion suit. It shows that they're willing to change the character and go interesting places with the story. I'd be lame if they just kept doing similar stories where nothing changes in the universe.
This new suit is a contender for my favorite Samus look. It's so clean and sleek looking and the color scheme is striking and brilliant. I adore it.
One of my favorite things about the Fusion suit is that it accentuates beyond any shadow of a doubt the non-euclidean alien anatomy it gives her, subtly conveying how incomprehensibly advanced the civilization behind it is.
1st impression was bad for me but after watching the gameplay and it warmed up to me it just shot to the top.

I love the animations on the emmi, they move in such an "efficient" way, using the least movements necessary, not even turning their torso when mot needed, thus walking backwards. so cool and ominous.
I feel like such a dummy in retrospect for watching the entire Dread trailer thinking it was a Fusion remake. Why, because Samus looks slightly blue? C'mon, me, get it together!

It would have been super hype if they hadn't told us ahead of time what they were showing us, but then people would be so confused as to whether this was Metroid Prime 4.
It was super hype for me because I tuned into the direct just as Metroid Dread's title popped up. Yeah it gave me a heart attack.
I don't think they should have done that. The thought of a side scroller MP4 would have been kind of disappointing.
Also, after the first seconds of the trailer I thought "please, don't be Other M part 2, but then I quickly realized the similarities to Return of Samus".
I already saw people thinking like: if this is 5 then where was 4? 😅
@@Chrisco_Thingking For those people I will note here, Metroid and Metroid Prime are considered different series with a shared canon. There's Metroid Prime, MP2, MP3, and the upcoming MP4. Separately, there's Metroid, Metroid 2: Return of Samus, Metroid 3 is an alternate title for Super Metroid given in-game, and Metroid 4 is an alternate title for Metroid Fusion also given in-game.

I, after seeing how badass this game looked, managed to pre-order the Special Edition of Metroid Dread, quickly caught up and lore and I can officially say I'm hyped.
This is gonna be my first Metroid game. And boy could I not be more excited.

@@kite4803 - Canonically there hasn’t been a direct sequel to Metroid Fusion and that was in 2002, every other Metroid game like Prime was set in between the Metroid games 1-4. Zero Mission, and Samus Returns were remakes, and Other M was a sequel of sorts to Super Metroid since it leads into Fusion.
So yeah, this game is a huge deal for Metroid fans like me, and personally I never thought we would get a Metroid 5 let alone Dread, Fusion felt pretty wrapped up by the games conclusion and I wasn’t really sure if it needed a sequel. I loved Fusion despite it being linear, the story was amazing and the SA-X was what kept me glued to my GBA screen at the time. I’ve played it many times over, it’s a great game. But I’m very excited for Dread.
This game feels like a passion project, and seeing that coming out of a big company like this warms my heart.
My thoughts on the game being open vs. linear: Here’s the thing, in a horror/tense setting, linear works very well because it’s not a question of if you’re going to run into something that stalks you but when, and you don’t know anything about the whens or the wheres on first playthrough, just that it’s going to happen. In a linear game like Metroid Fusion you can’t just sequence break to avoid the SA-X. You can’t find another path around it. No, you have your inevitable run-in and you have to deal with it; you have to survive. The dollhouse section of RE Village is a great example of this. These E.M.M.I.s give me the same feelings I had when I first dealt with SA-X as a child only there is one mechanic that gives an out that isn’t running away like King Arthur and his knights from Monty Python and the Holy Grail as extreme an example as that is, but it’s basically a last resort since if you mess it up, you’re dead, so best not to get caught in the first place.
On the other hand, open can also work in a horror environment. REmake 2 is a perfect example of this with the Mr. X tyrant and how it roams around the map, but that’s also the sole reason why it works: you _know_ Mr. X is trailing you at all times he’s active, and it adds to the strategy of blocking off paths and having to plan out your routes, whether to take risks and ford through hordes of zombies and other things that want you dead, unlocking shortcuts, stuff like that. The E.M.M.I.s would need to provide that same feeling throughout the entire game since your introduction with that first one seemed like it was breaking down, and while I doubt all E.M.M.I.s patrol the entirety of the game, if the game is going to go with open exploration, there’s gotta be plenty of them to give a similar impression that they’re all stalking you and that you’re never safe except for the Save rooms and the like, and given we’ve seen at least two variants (the white and green ones), it’s certainly possible to get enough of them to make that impression, especially since we know that these are GF robots and the GF at this point of the story probably wants Samus dead.
Not just that. There's a variety and different types of these robots as shown with how the green one straight up slinks through small areas like a morph ball.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when Metroid 5 popped up on the screen. Then the fact it actually was Dread after all these years later hearing about this game! I can’t believe it! It’s going to be awesome!

I just got this great idea for an area in dread. What if samus goes into an factory made by the chozo where you can see the making of the energy tanks. That would be awesome.
Personally, I think the Fusion suit is the best suit design in the series. It looks a lot sleeker and less clunky than the classic versions of the Power Suit, and the forearm blades are a nice nod to the Chozo statues. The new version also looks good, but I think the helmet shape looks slightly odd.
i get the feeling that the E.M.M.I that we've seen so far are the "easy mode" and get progressively more TERRIFYING as the game goes on. like one that is faster, one that takes more time scanning making it more risky to use that cloaking thing, one that's gonna take more super cannon hits to take down, ect

I really want the same feeling I got playing Zero Mission the first time in Chozodia where if the space pirates spot you they all chase you and it was TERRIFYING but I also love it in metroid.

I'd love it if they also become faster, stronger and more intelligent as the game progresses.
Instead of introducing a new variant that possesses expanded abilities, it would be really scary to encounter the same E.M.M.I as before, hide behind a wall, and suddenly it's able to break through and pursue you.
That's just an example, but all it would take is to have a few abilities that they gain over time. They could break through terrain, work together to corner you, lock doors to funnel you down paths - there's loads of ways they could become more threatening.
Also, if they didn't all improve at the same rate, it would make it more interesting (as well as more fair) every time you encounter one - not knowing if you'll be able to take the easy way out, or if it'll be too smart to be tricked. By the end of the game, they'll all be incredibly powerful and cunning, so you'll never truly outclass them.
Actually that was shown in the treehouse, like they first start off not being able to crawl through tight spaces, and then they introduce ones that do just that.
When they said this is the end of the Metroid arc, to me that means that any sequels to Dread won't be focusing on Metroids.
They might make prequels where Metroids are present, but as for the story moving forward, Metroids will only be found in the history books from this game on.
Yea initially I assumed it meant the end of the story and future games would be set before. But then realized coukd just mean focused on other stuff than Metroids/X/etc. If they aren’t heavily involved and resolved here maybe 6 on could be focused on Samus against the Federation themselves or a new alien threat.

8:19 I would say that most of the dark atmosphere comes from not knowing when you'll run into the robots.
I. Knew it. I saw Emmi and thought, "That tech looks federation". I didn't catch the treehouse because my break ended but I think the federation made Emmi to beat Samus as a backup plan in case she went rogue. Which, if we recall the end of fusion, she did to a T. Now Emmi has gone rogue from neglect in the facility she was created in, and with the federation out of options to stop Samus they wake her up. Afterwards it's simple to put up a distress beacon because Samus always goes after distress beacons
Actually, in the Dread Report the devs said that the GF found readings of possible remaining X parisites and sent 7 E.M.M.I. to investigate it. The unit of E.M.M.I. mysteriously dissapeared soon after, and Samus traveled to the planet they were dispatched on to investigate. She might not be on the nicest terms with the GF at the moment, but it's obvious that they aren't openly hostile to her as of yet.

Yeah (most) past Metroid games haven't exactly been friendly to newcomers, since it's often confusing and has those moments where you're just stuck.
Have you tried metroid fusion? That game has more accessibility options and is just better imo
yes, i think the best games to try for newcomers are fusion, zero mission, the prime games, or if any of those games are not easy to come by, Samus Returns

I've actually never played a 2D Metroid game before, but I'm in love with the prime games. I'm super excited for this game along with prime 4!
I forgot until someone brought it up, but since this is a sequel to Fusion, Samus is part Metroid and on the run from the Galactic Federation.
Also, some possibilities of the X Virus still being alive.
Being a sequel to Fusion makes the horror adventure aspect make even more sense

I personally suspect EMMI is attacking Samus because it detects the Metroid DNA inside her.
EMMI seems to have some of Samus’ abilities, so maybe they are made from the parts of her suit they removed at the beginning of fusion? They don’t look like anything we’ve seen before so they might have been created by the Federation.
Nvm, i forgot that the SA-X WAS her original suit, and not just a copy. It’s still not impossible, but it’s pretty unlikely.

I hope it lives up to Metroid fans expectations and sells well. I’m also hoping they up the creepiness factor as the game progresses. Maybe you think the robots can’t follow you out of their patrol areas, but than they start to. Maybe a bigger, way scarier enemy stalks you at the end.
These things were probably designed to hunt down or contain Metroids, and Samus has to find that out the hard way after destroying them.

Closing the story of the Metroids is a cool and unexpected idea. The part that’s really neat to me is that the title would still work as Samus now permanently has Metroid DNA in her. The series can expand on her possibly gaining new powers (like life steal maybe?) and being a triple threat to the space Pirates now. Now they’ll want Samus alive so they can do experiments or something. This isn’t even mentioning the evil Chozo, which is potentially a VERY interesting can of worms to open for the franchise.

Some people just have more specific wants, I suppose. I hope Metroid fans in general aren't going to be in too particular of a mindset as to what this game should exactly be like. Many of them have been playing Super in particular so long, I can imagine at least some of them feel on a certain level that Super is exactly what Metroid as a whole should be, and consequently might be less open to divergence from that formula...
It pays to go in with an open mind, I believe.
Yeah its ridiculous. The game still has a ton of exploration you can do too, its just the main story is now more linear.
@@Nicholasryan17 which is not a bad thing at all. The story will likely be pretty important since this is the last game in the story arc so they need to be able to tell it in an efficient way.
One of my biggest issues with breath of the wild was that the story was an absolute mess, constantly being shown via flashbacks every so often.
Ironically, I like fusion (and zero mission, those two are my favorites), but I really disliked samus returns.
It felt too easy (at least after a certain pickup), relied too hard on its gimmick, and looked.. weirdly generic.
I saw this comment (from the user Zaku Guriin) on the Metroid Dread trailer (in the Gamespot channel):

The final (11th) Chozo Memory is an edit of the 10th one, it is all red and shows a Chozo with an arm cannon having killed another Chozo, posed as if giving orders for war. The "cryptic message" instead of saying 11/10 saying "2d/10", with "2d" being in red, so "M5D and the D was colored red" is only partly true.

Since MercuryStream is based in Spain and I speak Spanish as my first language. I remember seeing an Spanish news article one month ago hinting that they were working out on another metroid title. I assumed they were refering to a port of samus return or another remake (maybe of super or fusion), but damn HOLY SHIT this is so much better.

@@Ray_2112 Agree that the revised games are better than the originals… BUT they were updated with Quality of Life improvements which required additional buttons… L & R buttons… Game and Watch only has two buttons… which is probably why the Zelda Game & Watch has the NES games, and the Gameboy Link’s Awakening… In retrospective the Mario Game & Watch could’ve and should’ve had Mario, 1,2,3 or Super Mario Land 1, 2, 3, Wario Land… Maybe a Mario Game & Watch 2… could have these Gameboy games…as they’re infinitely more fun than original Super Mario Bros.

@@HolyCow0273 True. Prime is mostly, the two spin offs not counting, all about the Phazon. It is a closed storyline. But you should play it to see how the space pirates claimed their power back and that they never were gone.
When I saw the reveal I was honestly spending the first part of it dumbfounded trying to process seeing the words "Metorid 5" on screen then I absolutely lose it when "Metorid Dread" shows up on screen. My Hype is freaking through the roof. I've been thinking "Metorid Dread" all day.

I can’t think of any other examples of stuff that was cancelled, but Metroid Dread was technically never even announced, nor was there ever any public cancelation statements, at least that I’ve seen. I’m still excited for it, though, and it’d be cool if it was the game Reggie was talking about.

I think indie metroidvanias will actually boost this game’s sales. The indie games introduced so many people to the metroidvania genre. I wouldn’t be nearly as excited for this game if I hadn’t enjoyed other metroidvanias like hollow knight and iconoclasts.

Crazy how the whole genre is named after Metriod and Castlevania and yet we rarely get games in those franchises these days. Indies have been keeping the genre alive for years.
