The sword does have a use. A long, metal sword has more armor peircing capabilities than keratin claws. Can you cut through metal with a single swipe? Sword: Yes, Claws: No Can you go straight in one end and out the other? Sword: Yes Claws: No.
To answer about the sword: Sometimes in the books, I can't exactly recall, but I know that there were times that the dragons used weapons. (Like maybe the spears in the Diamond Trial, from Winter's book)

What catches me out with the NightWing armour, is that it isn't full-body-coverage armour. We all remember that they wanted to be fully protected from the RainWing's venom, so i'd have thought they'd stick with the idea of full-body-coverage armour like they had back then. right? right? no? okay.
