    This is Dan. I flew this flight at OSH 2017 and it was not during airshow. It was just one morning when it was kind of quiet and GA arrivals were on Runway 27 so runway 18 wasn't getting used for much. I asked for left circuits on 18 and it was approved, there is nothing insane about the flying. I fly this plane from the right seat so simple circuits on a very long 18 were not a problem. The turn in looks a bit sharper than it really was, but this was at ATC (tower) request in order to keep us well south of GA arrivals flying right downwind for 27. I don't fly this aircraft, I am one with it, and I sense each and every sound and vibration as it happens. It is a very harmonious method of flying gracefully and there was no high G, aerobatic, or dangerous aspect of this flight. This was very simple graceful flight operating the craft exactly the way Mr. Douglas designed it to be operated. Thank you for your comments. I will be happy to answer any further questions. Dan Gryder

    My father made two one wheel landings during a thirty year career of flying DC-3's and C-47's. (they were landings due to damage to the plane during hazardous flying when an attempt to shoot it down resulted in damage to one engine). He said, "this damn plane can get through nearly everything. It may come in on its last leg, but, by God, it WILL come in"!

      Agreed. Any operator one with their machine is a beautiful union, even if it is just a lowly automobile, or a diesel generator. Not many join deeply with a machine in a way that there is a, dep devotion to it and they know it so well. When we see an old man with just a 1976 Cordoba many think it is just an old man that bought an old car. But if the old man has had that Cordoba from when it was new, that is almost a mystical bond. What about a person that salvaged and has rebuilt the engines of an old boat 30 years ago and still has it running like new. That is much more than an owner and his machine. That is a person one with his boat and he knows every screw and bolt on it.

    This video is great for those who dont recgonize the difference in sound between an opposed engine and a radial engine.
    Opposed engines are lighter sounding, putterier, and sharper.
    Radials are smoother, deeper and heavier sounding. They rumble, and have a nice rythym from the camring & counterweight rotation. And the ones that have roller valve tappets have the smoothest sound of all.
    Best heard on a proper surround sound system.
    Or, better yet, in person.

      Left wheel had to suddenly accelerate from a static condition. The sudden weight put on that wheel when lowered was greater than a normal landing when the wheels can tickle the runway and accelerate more slowly. A DC3 can be made to land so gently that the passengers don't know exactly when touch down occurs.

      Ce bruit est typique du DC-3, tant a l'interieur qu'a l'exterieur. Les moteurs Pratt & Whitney, Modele-1850, je crois, sont, evidemment, a plein regime au decollage et durant la montee.

    "Insanely Low DC-3 " It doesn't appear to be any lower than DC-3s in general.

    is not any properly done xwind landing a one wheeled landing. i routinely do one wheeled passes down the runway in my luscombe purely to show off and the fact is it is much easier to steer on one wheel than on two! anybody who is awed by a one wheel pass in a taildragger probably has little or no time flying one.

    No, I Guess the PIC pushed the structural limits next to the red líne.
    Old aircraft should be preserved from crashing ( you know the saying" there aren't old bold pilots " ) . High "G'" manoeuvres should be avoided at all cost.

      @Astircalix…..what video were you watching? While I generally agree with your sentiments regarding preservation of classic aircraft, there were no high loads imposed on the airframe in these flybys.

      @@raycoleman3183 I partially agree with you. At some point, it appears that the structure will not be damaged. But let's not forget that this old plane is as old as most of the surviving WWII pilots who still walk around. What I meant was to take care of the old DC 3´s / C47´s as we take care of its veteran pilots. Cheers from Argentina!

      @@astircalix4126 you people keep saying there are old pilots and bold pilots but this pilot is both 💀💀 the fact the dude is in his 60s ruins your whole argument. Dan gryder is a calculated and careful pilot with great skill. I'd stop armchair quarterbacking

      Now, back to the problem you pointed out: I'm not talking about Dan Gryder's aeronautical prowess; on the other hand, I think that old planes should be handled differently so that they are preserved for the next generations. I assume you conflate both arguments.

    a wing low one wheel landing is a standard in the tail dragger pilots bag of tricks for cross wind landings.. not so much awesome as basic competence and mastery of the aircraft. .

      Zac vaper Like he said, its a standard maneuver for a tail dragger. You will ground loop if you land any other way in a crosswind.

      Joe Schmoe
      You miss the the point and your stupid. He's doing this with no crosswind and you say it's a standard maneuver for a taildragger? The maneuver is called crabbing and it has NOTHING to do with his plane being a taildragger. You and Larry should just stfu and stick to licking windows and eating crayons.

    • @joeschmoe7978
      @joeschmoe7978 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Zac vaper "Crabbing" and "Xwind landings" are two different maneuvers entirely. You never "crab" on final into a landing. If you have ever sat in the left seat you would know that you side slip into a landing and plant the upwind main gear first. This is the proper procedure in everything from a 172 on up. If you were taught to "crab" on final and then try to straighten it out in the flare before your wheels touch, go find your instructor and punch them in the throat. You're going to have an accident doing it that way. Make sure you know what you are talking about before you start calling others stupid. This post may save your life one day. I suggest you go find a flight instructor and ask them to teach you how to do it properly. Cheers :-D.

      @ZacVaper 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joe Schmoe,
      There's no "two different maneuvers" when landing in a heavy crosswind; you crab and land on one wheel first. Now you go back to licking windows and eating your crayons, before you hurt your little brain.
