@@OfAbstract Nolly’s settings revolve around some concrete approaches but his exact settings likely differ from song to song. But he has a masterclass on TH-cam. Just look up nolly masterclass
One thing worth mentioning about the "Clean" step is also to clean your guitar. Being able to see a generous layer of dust on your headstock in 720p can be very distracting...
Lighting... Do not underestimate the power of a great light source. Good lighting can make a cheap camera look pro. Bad lighting can make a expensive camera look cheap. Great video.
The mood part really is true. I recorded my first 2 videos in the street so it would look a bit more appealing then recording at home. But the colorful lights tip is gold. Tks
Dude no way... I was just searching for advice on how to film guitar videos to my channel and god blessed me with a Keyan Houshmand tutorial... Thanks man.
Im so guilty with this. Im hella awkward in creating covers. Playing like im on a stage is def the best advice I took from this video! Thanks man! Always a great content dude!
Thanks a lot Keyan! Your tutorials are always super straightforward and that's important to show people you can improve yourself without a annoying amount of effort
Essentially, you can light yourself with only one key light and use bounces for the fill and rim/hair. Alternatively, a clam-shell setup (1 key light centered from above and fill from below) also works great for guitar playing.
Great tips (and this is coming from a professional photographer). I think the goal of the person will dictate how far to go to create more professional looking content. For someone who wants to make a living as a musician or TH-camr, then investing the time and energy into creating a more professional look will be non-negotiable, but for the people who just do it as a hobby and uploads covers now and then, it really doesn't matter. In fact, the lack of polish adds to the casual hobbyist charm.
Another tip I can give you is trying to reframe your video in post as to make the vertical lines (such as your speakers and wall lines) in the background be perpendicular to the horizontal lower part of your frame. dunno if i'm any clear tho, there should be a "restraigten angle" option in your video software. A single degree change can assure your picture to look pro in an instant. You can also tackle this while shooting. Great video overall, as always.
Hi. I'm complete beginner. Lets say for example that I want to record and post guitar cover of Novelists song. How can I post this cover legally? Should I completely rewrite all the instruments so I don't get banned? Or is there some way to use ready-made instruments and record only one guitar. I know nothing about recording, mixing, mastering etc.
Hey what’s up man. I picked up my guitar again at 25 years old, and I wanted to begin making cover songs. I recently subscribed and the quality of your videos is great. Would you ever hop in a zoom call or anything of your preference for guidance on how to set everything up? I’m bad with the technology stuff. I would be willing to pay for your time of course whatever you decide! Thanks man
how do you record your videos tho ? like do you use a nice camera that is not hooked up to your computer .. then do you transfer the video to your computer ? and as for the lets say backing track stuff .. do you use like OBS at like the same time too. .then when your done do you edit it all together in like premiere pro or something ? or like how do you do it
Thank you for the tips! I won’t be using them anytime soon as I’m not a content creator, but I see the tremendous value this presents to an up and coming creator and it’s a huge service for the scene (pun intended)
Some of my videos from years ago have junk on screen everywhere- who knew? A clean staged background also identified you as part of your brand- always could be improved too. Thanks
Keyan, can you recommend me a good camera for guitar videos that's not very expensive, because I don't have one and that's one of the main reasons my videos aren't quality enough.
Panning 180 degrees from my video frame is an absolute mess. Blankets, shoes a boxing bag and piles random stuff scattered everywhere. But my set still looks nice haha
You can find $15-20 lightboxes on Amazon/AliExpress that take 2/4 bulbs per fixture, which you will have to buy separately. 1 bulb per fixture is typically not enough output. Make sure the bulbs you buy are LED (so that they don't radiate heat in infrared) and of higher color accuracy (CRI >85) than the regular cheap ones that produce an unpleasant green tint on camera.
Could you do a video on audio levels for uploading to YT. Your videos are some of the best sounding videos on here always. Thanks for all the great videos you post 🎸
I think another point that should have been stated (at least for DSLR users... maybe an advanced section on this video :P ) is Focal Length, Focus, and Framerate. Those there also reeeaaallly help with some gnarly video shoots.
What I'm curious on is how everyone does their sound. Do you record the video live with the guitar signal going through an interface and use that audio? Or is it pre-recorded and then sort of 'mimic' playing? I'm sure there are folks out there that do both. Which works better for you and why?
The thing I am most wondering, but I maybe oldschool, is why everyone is sitting down in these videos. I used to play everything standing up, especially when performing for an audience. Is it a matter of space?
Honestly, it’s most likely from learning from each other and watching how other people do it. However, space is definitely a factor, I don’t think I could stand in my studio and get a good camera shot

Any chance you can share what stand up lights you have on either side of your desk? They look sick
They’re from a local retailer, the bulbs are LIFX
I'm so guilty of the messy desk in the background. I need to clean that up for my videos from now on.

If I wasn't watching you - I'd have said I was listening to Plini talk

A mixture is nice like he does. It'll be actual playing during the video then usually the "in the mix" parts are mimic
