      I'd much rather they deliver on Deluxe versions of the original 13 albums than bothering with Greatest Hits compilations, and as an exercise in gathering up all the singles over two sets they muffed up by not including "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love." With the addition of the last Beatles single, the title "1967-1970" no longer makes any sense, and with everything going 5.1, what good are the 2009 remasters now...?

    The best mix of I Am the Walrus is on the Love album. Even the second half of the song sounds great, I don't know why they had problems in 2023 when they absolutely nailed it in 2006

      @luizansounds 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They tried doing too much, when I remixed the song I barely used any effects because the song itself was basically ready, all that phasing and heavy bass absolutely ruined the song, killing the protagonists (the keys, strings and Lennon's voice)

      The original monomix (made 29 september 1967) used a live feed from a radio. It was BBC channel 3 who was broadcasting a Shakespeare play 'The tradegy of King Lear'. This caused a problem when the stereo mix was made 17 November 1967 as the radio sounds was not on tape. The solution was to mix the first half of the song in stereo and then use the mono mix for the second half in fake stereo. The start of the fake stereo is when John sings 'Sitting in an english garden...". It is quite obvious when you listen with headphones. Giles Martins solution in 2023 was to totally redo the second half of the song. Like it or not. The old mix is still there to enjoy. The Love remix was probably done using the mono mix to insert the radio sounds into the new stereo mix. The radio sounds are not so prominent in that mix. But I agree that the Love mix are better than the one on the blue album.
      Revolution is also a much better mix on the Love album than on the new Blue album. On Love you have the guitars panned hard left and right and the drums and base centered. This is how hard rock should be mixed. On the Blue both guitars are on one side and the drums and base on the other side like on the original stereo mix. This ruins the mix totally for me.

    • @girlswanted7
      @girlswanted7 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      On XM they are playing the original stereo mix and not the 2023 mix like they usually do with other songs. That speaks volumes….

      @@rolfolsson6333Revolution still sounds better than the 2009 remaster especially on headphones. That being said I do agree the best version is on the Love album. But, the Love album is disqualified because that is a true remix where Giles added music etc.

    Agree re Andy White version of Love Me Do. Not because of the drum performance of White over Ringo. It’s that the energy and singing performance of John and Paul is way better on the White version. Plus it’s the one that was on the original Red album.

    Nice helpful review, thanks. I agree that Giles Martin has been "hit or miss" on the remixes, in fact I'd say he's been a lot more miss than hit. I hate most of what he did to Revolver (other than the song "Yellow Submarine") . I don't know who should be remixing instead, arguably someone with the hearing of a 25 year old and the soul of a 75 year old.
    I'm glad that you praise the high points but you aren't a cheerleader for every song. I agree that not every song was meant to be heard in an aggressive or even crystal clear way. Giles seems to have little or no "feel" for the songs, he doesn't even seem to be paying attention to the mood of the lyrics. Just because his dad produced The Beatles is not the reason to hand him the job. But it is what it is, not what we wish it was, so I will probably get the Red CD set but not the Blue one.

    • @luizansounds
      @luizansounds 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah you did a great Review ngl, but yeah you would need a mixing engineer that is totally out of the mainstream to so the remix job because everyone nowadays in the industry have terrible habits that don't translate to old songs (heavy compression, too much bass, bunch of brick wall, complete disregard for dynamics and etc)

    Thanks for your summary. I also knew these compilations for nearly 50 years and the album versions of those songs as well. Comparing to the earlier versions, there are much more details in the mix. I also like that the mix is not so overloaded with the reverb effect as ist use to be in the former versions. All in all in my opinion the mix is much more balanced in terms of frequency spectrum and volume ratio. I just love it.

    5:55 - George's guitar solo on I Saw Her Standing There was THE highlight of the whole song. Paul screams, George jams - then a minute later they all throw themselves into the riff and drive it home. The solo sounds best in mono, I think. It's right in your face then.

    Agree with you 100% Spot on! "I am the Walrus" is definitely a mess. I absolutely LOVE the 1967 stereo mix, A real fun listen especially on good headphones. Even the "Love" remix is pretty cool. No idea what the deal is here, the radio bits are distracting and just plain WRONG! Also, what happened to the punchy snare drum sound? Totally disappointed when I know how good it could have sounded. "Old Brown Shoe" sucks, too. Too much bass, rhythm guitar is GONE, some of the lead guitars are missing as well and the voice is way to far back in the mix. "Hey Bulldog"... terrible mix. 1999 mix sounds better. You Nailed it, couldn't agree more. Love the red album remixes though, it was revelatory and like hearing those songs for the first time. 😁

One observation from my listening re Rubber Soul tracks - in a word wonderful. I always loved this album, and this is just revelatory. Paul’s bass sound fantastic, and the overall stereo mix brings this material into the 21st century. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed listening to this new mix. Norwegian Wood has been transported from a great song, to possibly the best ever pop song of all time!

    surprised that they included cover songs this time around.
    although, personally, I've always thought Twist and Shout SHOULD'VE made that exception back in the original release.
    i think that's the one cover Beatles did that they really made it their own. I mean, I know A LOT of people (including me, back in the 80s..who didn't know that much about this and that in music) who think that's a Beatles original tune.
    the rest...I'm not sure whether I would include This Boy...and If I Needed Someone. Personally, I prefer the inclusion of Do You Want to Know a Secret and There's a Place.
    On You Can't Do That, it's a toss between that or I Call Your Name for me.
    I'm over the moon for all the long deserved addition of the Revolver tracks..that should've been on the album since 73.
    but, I was surprised they included I'm Only Sleeping instead of another 1966's non-Revolver number, Rain.
    On the Blue ones...
    I was surprised at the inclusion of Within You Without You (I prefer The Inner Light as George's Indian track to be included instead...I was also expecting Getting Better, as the additional Sgt. Pepper's track)
    The rest: Dear Prudence (glad), Glass Onion (glas, but indifferent), Blackbird (expected).
    I did expect instead of those White Album tracks tho, that they would include: Happiness Is a Warm Gun and Helter Skelter...and perhaps, Birthday.
    Personally, I would also add I Will..a track that really grew out to be one of Beatles' most well known and beloved classics...but, I'm so glad they deemed the much underrated Hey Bulldog to be worthy of inclusion in this.
    On the rest of the added tracks...I expected Oh Darling to be one (I think that's just Paul's best vocals on any Beatles or Wings tracks). I did not expect I Me Mine to be included instead of For You Blue...and I think I've Got a Feeling should've been added to this "expanded" edition.

    Hi Joe, I love the video, but I thought I had better tell you that the versions of Get Back and Let It Be are from the 2015 version of 1(+) album which was also remixed by Giles Martin and Sam Okell. The single version of Get Back did not appear in the Let It Be box set and the single version of Let It Be from the EP in the Let It Be box set might be a different remix than the 2015 1 remix. It would be interesting to compare the Martin/Okell remixes of songs like She Loves You, A Hard Day's Night, Eight Days A Week, Yesterday, We Can Work It Out and Penny Lane from the 2015 version of 1 to the "Red" and "Blue" albums. It looks like Strawberry Fields Forever was remixed by Martin/Okell for the 2015 "1" album before realising that it doesn't appear on the album.

    Sorry Joe, I’ve been a little out of control with the comments because of my passion for the Beatles (plus I wasn’t feeling well). That being said I most likely will purchase this. The way I see it is even the tracks like Walrus, Old Brown Shoe, She Loves, make for an interesting listen (plus nobody can take away the originals). Revolution sounds good, I just love the Love rendition of it better, but that was mix mixed (if you know what I mean). Overall most songs sound incredible. Nobody is talking about You Can’t Do That which sounds extraordinary.

    Original mixes of the early Beatles in stereo are garbage (and understandably so.) Hard panned, vocals on one side, instruments on the other.. I'm glad that's all been fixed with these. I listened to the new Red and Blue and compared the new mixes with the old, and it's a huge game changer. The technology that they have is revolutionary and I can't wait to get the entire catalog *finally* remixed. Magical Mystery Tour was one of the best remixes Giles has done so far, but some of those early tracks were improved on a lot too.
    Would love for them to finally just give us the rest of the albums in a big box set. Deluxe editions and new mixes.

    On A Limited Budget - Red Or Blue For Now.
    For those of you who want to pick up both Red or Blue albums in CD or Vinyl format but a limited budget means you have you cannot purchase both at once here is something to consider in choosing the first purchased. As for myself I am going with Red because out of the 38 songs on it, 30 of them are 2023 remixes. The rest are the 2022 Remix from the Revolver album that is on this collection. The Blue album has only 5 2023 remixes. The rest are remixed selections from the more recent anniversaries reissues of their albums. If you do not own any of the anniversaries reissues and like their later period music more than the earlier years then you might want to go with blue. If you do have those reissues albums as I do then Red is the bigger gang for the buck for more recent remixes. I hope this has been helpful. Cheers everyone. )

      I'm the walrus (and kinda old brown shoe, that keeps the vocals that don't complement the song) spoils the entire blue release, you would be better getting the remixes out of unnoficial sources and just get the red album, sure piracy isn't morally right but the blue album is a ripoff for ppl who bought all the remixes from revolver onwards

    Great analysis and review! God bless you and all you love!
    Mr. Mayo I agree with you 100% on the new mix of I Am the Walrus! The intro is weird. The way it is currently mixed on the 2023 recording now has holes in the fabric of the sound. John Lennon's voice is really good! And I do like the fact that I can hear more cold wind sounds from their voices!
    But the ending is all messed up like you analyzed! And of course I was not at the mixing session originally with George Martin but I will say this one thing I can tell that there's something definitely wrong with the remix. I like George Martin's original mix there's kind of a grittiness and a warmth to what George Martin originally did. And thanks again for taking time to do a great analysis of the Red and Blue!

    Some great remixes here. However, in some cases I prefer older remixes. Tracks on "Yellow Submarine Songtrack" (2012) are still state of the art (for me). Also, some tracks from the "Love" Album are great and I still prefer the “Naked” remixes over the 2021 "Let it be" Version which you can find here on the "Blue" one…. But of course it's a matter of personal taste;-)

    EVERY track on EVERY "Beatles" LP was played on AM radio. The result was that the LPs were #1 on BOTH the LP and SINGLES charts.

      @@peteseaton1547 I'm talking about the United States, and the US LPs.
      And when the worthwhile music moved to FM, for the two weeks before the release of "The Beatles" (aka "White" LP) the entire LP was played, all four sides, without commercials or interruptions, every evening.
      And then the weekends were filled with playing all those tracks mixed with all prior "Beatles".
      Don't know about your part of the world, but in the US "The Beatles" became the soundtrack of the world.

    There is a great article from a few years ago by DJ Ken Dashow called, 12 Of Paul McCartney's Greatest Bass Lines Ever from the radio station Q104 and he says in the begining, One of the greatest song writers of all-time also helped write the book on rock and roll bass guitar.
    There is a TH-cam link to the video of The Beatles great live 1963 performance in Sweden of Paul's great rock song, I Saw Her Standing There and he rightly says that Paul was already a killer bassist by the time the band broke through in America and he said his line from I Saw Her Standing There positively cooks with rock n roll walking bass excitement.
    There is also a great article by self taught bass and piano player Dennis Alstrand from his book about Paul's great bass playing called, The Beatles And Their Revolutionary Bass Player.
    And Dennis says that the bass is not an easy instrument to learn and that you can hear even in 1961 when The Beatles backed up Tony Sheridan that Paul's bass playing was already first rate and Paul was almost 19 and he taught himself to play it like he did with so many instruments.

    Had to listen to I Am The Walrus after hearing your opinion on the song. I think it was quite good and a fun new way to listen to the song. I like how the song clears John's vocal a little while still preserving the gritty sounding effect on his voice. The choir is cleared up too and I'm hearing things louder in the mix that was subdued in the original. Now for the ending, I did like how different it sounds and it emphasis the psychedelic ending they went for the 60's. Lifting things louder in the mix and having the radio static go absolutely nuts without losing the backing track the Beatles did. Now, I do wish the string orchestra at the ending was a little more prominent and I would've liked to have the "bury my body" part preserved because I wasn't able to hear it. I heard the song through headphones and it was a treat for my ears that way trying to follow along with all l the new sounds.

    Regarding the red: high points for me were I saw her standing there, this boy, we can work it out, if I needed someone and Michelle; for their clarity, separation and rythmn sections. Excellent job. Low points were She loves you- not much change really- no separation and low drums; Help- punch has been taken out, and Nowhere Man- the reverb, which always made it a bit other- worldly is missing, and the solo is too low.

    Hey, Joe. Always enjoy your videos. The original US single version of "I Am The Walrus" had the extra beats just before "sitting in an English garden." The original UK single and EP versions had the 6-beat introduction instead of the 4-beat one. No official version had both sets of extra beats. Then in 1980, for the US version of the "Rarities" album, Capitol made a special edit containing both oddities. That version has never been released on CD. The reason the original mix of I am the Walrus goes into faux stereo after "sitting in an English garden" is quite basic. When Walrus was first being mixed as the 'B' side of Hello Goodbye (a mono mix), the excerpts from King Lear were added to the mono tape during the mixing session. They were taken from a BBC radio broadcast that was being aired while they were mixing. That excerpt does not exist on the multitrack tapes. When going back to do a stereo mix, they became aware that the King Lear segment was not on the session tapes and couldn't be included, so they just made the last part fake stereo. There was no way to extract that excerpt from the mono tape in 1967.
