i am a big MSU fan..i sat probably 20 rows behind this guy in the student section..i must say..the sonic boom really impressed me.. when i heard they were coming.. i'd always heard about the dancing and figured they'd take away from the music just for dance..but they really won alot of MSU faithful over.. they were classy and great for the game... it was different but i believe everyone enjoyed the sonic boom!!.. JSU fans were great.. and the atmosphere was awesome!!.. have a great season guys!
WOW! I went to MSU and I was at this game. It sounded so great live. I kid you not, MSU fans stood the entirety of JSU's field and sat down when our own band took the field.
This was an awesome half-time show performed by the Sonic Boom of the South...very well done in memory of the "King of Pop", Micheal Jackson. Thanks to the entire music department and students of JSU's Sonic Boom of the South. Keep up the awesome work!
Great show jsu..nice way to show Msu fans what a halftime performance is suppose to look like...I don't have anything against corp style bands because I played in one, but corp style has its place and that's competition...halftime is for entertainment purposes only and that's what SWAC bands and hbcu bands do they entertain and nobody can touch that at halftime!! If you go to a nfl game or nba game they have entertainment at halftime that's how it's suppose to be, which is why the nfl always invites hbcu bands to perform...now I will make an exception for corp style bands that put on good halftime shows like Ohio state etc...but Msu is not one of them they don't even roll their feet they walk
Great show Boom...This is a preface to what awesome and exciting showmanship the Sonic Boom is going to put forth this season...I look forward to seeing the Boom in person for their 1st home game and performing with my fellow alums. on homecoming...LOVE THE BOOM BABY!!!
Showband shows are set up different from DCI bands. JSU actually drills a lot, but they were the visiting band at a school that typically performs alone during halftime. This meant that JSU only had a small window to perform within. Most show bands have feature pieces with dancers and concert selections which is why the band was in what we call a concert formation.
Checkout the was that other bands looking at them perform, they a saying to they self when we grow up we want to be just like them, they are capable of doing both types of marching on a field just like all HBCU bands Their just that good
A very nice first performance. The sound was decent (even from this angle) and the band seems to have a RENEWED ENERGY that has been missing over the past few years. They even restored the TIGER RUN-ON! So far-SO GOOD w/o LIDDELL!!!!! LOVE THE BOOM!
Mississippi State witnessed a Broadway caliber show, then got 'gangstered' off of their own field lol. The addition of the fan narration was helpful and entertaining also 🤣
Unfortunately the network did not show the halftime performance. Don't they know you can't go to break during a HBCU halftime?!!!!! MSU looking like wow- good stuff!
LOL its funny how ppl on here bashing MSU or JSU. Both bands are capable of performing excellent. The ones speaking negatively probably hasn't been to anybody,s University before.
ooooo i can't wait for the first game this year and now imma actually be in it! AND the field show will be even better this year under the direction Dowell Taylor.. Sorry Famous Maroon Band, the Sonic Boom of the South is back to kick butt again!
Knows that they have to be knowledgeable of all styles. Many of the phds are from MSU! So, if they are incapable that means that MSUs music program sucks. JSU can do both styles can MSU? The name is SONIC BOOM of the South! So, it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that they are about the shake the earth with sound with Tubas fonking it up! They can play and march to whatever they choose because they the best band in the land. I've never heard any celebrity shouting out MSUs band
You are so right about that. You think football players have to get out there in that heat in the summer alone,...band members are out there also. I use to DREAD the beginning of band season. One good thing for me I was on the flag line so I didnt have to memorize music and steps,.....
Where's the marching? Do all college bands play standing still for 90% of their shows? possibly i'm ignorant but I'd rather watch a DCI show ANY day of the week
For some reason people are assuming that JSU is incapable of performing corp style. The student is trained into corp style first of all and 2nd of all it is a CHOICE. The have chosen to entertain and they are excellent at it. if they were not they would not be know across the world as they are, yes across the world. If they choose to do corp style they can do it because they are trained into it. Also, the band directors wouldn't be hired if they didn't have PHds into music and any idiot
In all actuality those bigger schools are grand stage for many sport recruiters. Because the bigger schools actually recruit for that and get good picks... Not saying that lower division schools don't but remember larger division schools have greater fundings to do bigger scouting. So they get good picks. But lower division do put out some good athletes.
Restored the Tiger Run-On? They never stopped doing. They did seem to do an older version of it at this game. I'm sure they'll bring back the strut and the longer run in later shows. Overall the band was good. There needs to be a little more drive, but other than that they looked good. They need more energy as well. And as for the DCI guy. Do DCI bands march without playing for 80% of thier shows cause I seem them doing it a lot in-between formations.
i need to clear this up.. MSU did not play their halftime show during this game..they had a famous country group come play for the remaining time where the band just pitched in on the music.. JSU's band was a good different taste of flavor in starkville.. but the day was meant for football..and JSU didnt stand a chance after the coin flip.. sonic boom did rock tho..lol
see when HBCU bands get on the field people sit and enjoy the show but when the corp style bands get on the field them consession stands are makin MONEY!!! lmao i bet when JSU got on the field the consession stand workers were like "please JSU stay on the field" lol
@uppychuck of course you have a different style, but please understand JSU can sit upright in the stands and play marches as well as other technical pieces of music right along with MSU. As far as you calling it noise, well.......YOUR FANS WOULD RATHER LISTEN TO THAT NOISE THAN THAT BS MSU DID!!! You can take that to the bank BUDDY!
What has to be established is that this was a game to build money..... we all know how recruitment goes at those bigger schools. What is funny is that some ppl from MSU look at this game as if it is going to count towards them being SEC Champions... Sorry Ya'll it don't even count.... LOL Just know that we do what we do in the SWAC and that is Show up and give good entertainment! JSU knows this game don't even matter 4 da SWAC Championship, So y cry over something that don't matter.
Why oh why!!! When the dancers perform the camera starts to shoot things that don't matter at that time. I wanted to see more of the J-settes. Dang!!!!
The person filming this had seats at the goal line, and a cell phone, not a boom mic... You're not going to get studio quality if you expected this to be louder. The Sonic Boom of the South lives up to its name.
The big difference is Show band vs Competition band. While show bands are great for colleges to get the home crowd riled up, a band like JSU Sonic Boom wouldnt stand for 5 seconds against even competitive high school marching bands. Competition marching is about formation, style, control, technical difficulty, and sound. You cannot just go out there blasting away as loud as you want and facing whatever direction you are moving in. A competition band will rarely if never face away from the crowd.
07BlackCobaltLS they're called corp style bands and all bands corp or show style in the end are there to entertain. Therefore in the end it's really up to taste and opinion. However it seems like you're trying to suggest show style is easier which I really doubt. Both have their difficulties but I'm sure it's at least more physically taxing to lift your legs to a 90 degree angle on tempo while also playing playing as loud as most show bands play vs essentially just knowing where your supposed to go on the field and being able to play your music for corp styles
Try playing and dance jumping into a split at the same time also playing loud during every movement. If u look at a person that marched in show style there legs are in prime shape. My high school band was Grambling marching style and we had a month to get ready for the season and it was running 4 miles a day and marching.
ok love it, i played tenor for BTW in shreveport, now i play for churches on side, i will be posting easy drumming videos next month, please subscribe yall, one love to all
Depaul is another one. JSU has beat plenty of D2 and D3 schools. Every one knows that for the last 6 or 7 season JSU has started the season off slowly and not played well in the first 1 to 3 games at times. That's what happened against DSU. Plus, they were probably overlooking them looking ahead to TnSU
The same Tavaris Jackson that lost his spot to a 39 year old with injury problems after barely beating out Sage Rosenfels? That's something to proud of there.
extremegun94 sounds mad..where's a VIOLIN?? lol. Just like MSU places "emphasis" on its football team, JSU places our emphasis on the band. ALWAYS have had a KILLER BAND and ALWAYS WILL have one.
@2244242 reading some of the other comments, i'm kinda surprised someone who makes as much sense as you receives the ratings you do. hopefully, most of the ridiculous statements here weren't made by actual band members. game recognize game. appreciating corp style, luv da Boom!
Whoo!! Dat damn BOOM!! How is the stadium filled with MSU fans and they cheered louder for the Boom than their own band?! Guess country music's not for everybody...lol
I MUST SAY , JSU shocked me for sounding this good!!!! Last year, yall sounded like garbage. It may be the new band director and better musicians ( get scared upper classmen ) !!!!!!!!!!
hahahaha I am over here cracking up because they D-Boed them off of their own field....They should have known to move anyway so they could come off the field but we're taught to move forward no matter who is in our way when performing, as you can see those Settes doing lmao!! Just like the army in battle...
No Mississippi State didn't feel bad after that.. obviously... football is what we are all about, not bands... only when JSU came was when the attention turned of course. The game was already one after 1st quarter.. so we sat back and enjoyed the sounds of music... Oh yeah.. fuck that blue-grass country shit MSU tried to put on while JSU was there... im a MSU fan but damn... you can't do that shit with a band like that...
wow JSU band wouldnt even claim you fans cause 85% of the band enjoyed MSU show that year and MSU enjoyed their music cause its the best of both worlds..... tragic when blacks want to down bands just cause they played bluegrass.... and yes i'm black
The fact that the SWAC produced a small number of NFl stars years ago does not change the fact that it is a garbage conference filled with third rate crap teams. I don;t blame you for living in the past though, I would too if my team was as shitty as JSU.
EITHER DO I have prove im a jstate fan I post to bash any hbcu band but if you can't tel from the clip the boom need some serious work then either u haven't play in the band are you being Naive.
lol bigsexy thats my nick name and that doesnt mean that im FAT lol ya'll so mad at the truth. IM SO damn confident in myself that why I use bigsexy oh and bout me played for grade school to undergraduate studies lol AND CAN READ MUSIC
MSU likes its SEC welfare check too much to switch conferences. I don't agree with losing just so I can get a cut of the BCS, but it's not my place to complain as I'm not a MSU fan. However, even a SEC whipping boy is light years ahead of the SWAC "champion". The entire conference is nothing but crap.
I here all the talk about the boom and I don't see all the good things folk see, im a huge fan. all I can see is that they're much bigger then recent yrs, but from this show NO ENGERGY,TERRIBLE DRILLING. LAWD the jsettes rountine was the WORST in yrs not trying to be negative but you have to call a spade a spade DAMN.
My J-State dont play wit nobody at all...LOVE da SONIC BOOM OF THE SOUTH.....dey b killn it.....

MSU looking like wow- good stuff!
we'll c yall in montgomery al at da bowl november 6th.and yall bring yall band
LOL its funny how ppl on here bashing MSU or JSU. Both bands are capable of performing excellent. The ones speaking negatively probably hasn't been to anybody,s University before.
I must comment that JSU makes awesome formations also--they are not only a show band. Did you not notice their formations?
@Camera man, why arent u filming the Jsettes doing their featire? Pitiful as hell.
Ohhhhh Weeeeeee.......yall didn't have to do MSU like that!!!! LOVE DA BOOM!!!

I wish they would've played each other for 2010.
Our time was limited, MSU is only one to perform at they home games. I guess they let JSU go on and perform
So good
