  • My company throws away a lot of these coffee cans and creamer bottles. I saw a video by Jnull0 where he did this for bird houses. I love this idea, and have to try it myself. They birds will love these little houses more I think.

      It's easy...I have plenty more cans to do now, and start hanging them up!

    I would have had the handle side as the roof or it’s going to be pretty difficult for birds to sit on any eggs and uncomfortable for any fledglings that turn up. A perch is unnecessary as it allows predators to attack the eggs of fledglings.

    Very good idea - I have some of the red Folgers plastic coffee cans that I wanna make into bird houses. I'm wondering tho if the lids should be sealed somehow with maybe E-6000 glue or something to make them predator-proof? Squirrels will go after baby birds and they can pry those lids off very easily. The lids could come off on their own possibly too in high wind or other weather elements ... However I'm not sure if the glue could be toxic to the birds..? So instead I think I'll get some thin, plastic-coated wire & make 2 holes just the size of the wire, just below the lid, one on each side of the house (and/or on the front and back) and feed it in thru one hole, along the inside of the lid & out the other hole (pressing the wire to take the form of the inside of the lid if possible to avoid birds getting caught on it) then twist the 2 wire ends together on the outside of the lid. This way the lid won't come off but can still be removed for cleaning, as opposed to glueing. However I'd only use this wire method if I planned on having the lid in the UP position (entrance hole on the side of can) - you don't want the chance of a baby bird getting caught on the wire - hense bending the wire into the lid, if possible. I'm also gonna drill more holes around the can for air circulation, it might get pretty stuffy inside on a hot day.

      I like being able to take the lid off to clean them out. No predator problems yet.

    Joe, you forgot to put the wheels on the house. Now you're going to need a building permit.

    This just showed up today in my suggested videos to watch. Did they work? Do you have birds in them? I've been wanting to make a few birdhouses. We don't usually have these cans (we use coffee beans that come in bags), but I happen to have one right now.

      +Linda Lubbesmeyer They actually do. We've found nests and eggs in them. I made the holes smaller on them though.

      @@StBernardAcres now, that makes me happy to hear! We've been on a kick lately of birdhouses and bird feeders and bird baths, and they're more entertaining than a boatload of movies. LOL

    Don't hang to many in the barn or you'll have bird shit all over the place, lol. Keep the holes a bit smaller or you'll have Crows going in those cans, haha.

      @StBernardAcres  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL....none in the barn. We already find a nest or two in there. And, yep, the whole on those two is a little bigger than I like. I grabbed the wrong hole saw when we were heading out there. But, it worked for the demo.
