A similar thing happen to me me back in the early 1980's. I was on a 747 Pan Am flight from JFK to Heathrow when we got diverted to Shannon in Ireland because Heathrow had 2" of snow while we were en-route. What a joke 2" of snow is nothing but UK airports just can't handle snow like North America / Canada can. I've taken off from Buffalo NY in a snow storm when the plane followed 4 snow ploughs down the runway, no problem. Anyhow I digress. We landed in Shannon & got bussed off to a local hotel where we were all given rooms but we had no luggage which was still on the plane. There was nothing to do but head for the bar (surprise surprise) where a group who were travelling on the plane pulled out the hotel piano & found a few other instruments & struck up some tunes. They played non-stop for 4-5hrs by which time we were all plastered on free booze & fell back onto the plane for the short flight over to Heathrow after an 18hr delay. Different times.

This is not an entirely unusual situation. I've been in airports and on planes home to Ireland on countless occasions when an impromptu session has started up. And even if there's no music, there's still a party atmosphere. Flying from California to New York, then onward to Ireland, it always felt that I was home once I reached the gate for the Irish flight at Newark airport. Strangers talking to strangers as if they were life-long friends. But then, we do have a saying in Ireland, 'A stranger is just a friend you have never met.' (W.B. Yeats) How true that is!
