  • PART 2: "2003: Redesigned for a Global Market"
Although Trinidad had been initially released publicly in 1998, there was still only one size available: the Fundadores. All this would change, however, in November 2003, when, in a truly pivotal moment for the brand, a spectacular re-launch took place at London's Hilton Park Lane Hotel, hosted by Hunters and Frankau, the UK's Exclusive Distributor of Habanos cigars.
The blend that Master Blender Raul Valladares had created back in 1998 for the launch of the Trinidad Fundadores was now ready to showcase its range. And three new sizes - the Coloniales, the Reyes, and the Robusto Extra - would be unveiled. The traditional gold Trinidad band was also beautifully reimagined, creating what is now the iconic so closely associated with the quality, craftsmanship, and tradition to beautifully represented by Trinidad.
In Episode 2 of our series, The Legacy of Trinidad, we explore this next chapter of the brand's history. We sit down with Jemma Freeman, Chairman of Hunters & Frankau, to learn about the 2003 expansion of Trinidad, visit the new factory in Pinar del Rio that was selected to produce all of Trinidad Cigars, and, finally, learn about the new 2024 Limited Edition Cabildos that has been meticulously designed to celebrate the 55th Anniversary of the brand.
    ABOUT THE LEGACY OF TRINIDAD

You are right, this beats anything on Netflix. But my fear is that the more Cuban cigars are publicised, the more rare and hard to find they will become. Cuba cannot just double production overnight. What a conundrum!

Watching the videos of Kirby in Cuba is a bittersweet sentiment. I was born and raised in Cuba under a brutal dictatorship. I’m now an American citizen. I do like the videos but watching the Cuban people in these videos I can’t stop thinking that they are all currently starving due to the government that is as brutal as an axe. Much of my family is in Cuba still, so this is not just hearsay. Make no mistake, every Cuban you see in this videos is cursing the day they were born on that island, and yet we have Kirby unintentionally romanticizing their poverty.
Cubans were able to smoke their Cuban cigars until a handful of years ago, now they smoke none of the ones they used to like.

    • @nikolanikolov4287
      @nikolanikolov4287 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

That is true. From Kirby's videos, I still see Cubans driving Russian LADA car from 80's. Cuba, similar to North Korea, is like frozen time capsule before the Perestroika.

Kirby! I'm not sure what you and your team did in terms of the recording and translating process of the interviews for this series so far, but it was done wonderfully! Great job to you and your team; the quality continues to rise!

Kirby, I must say congratulations on the exceptional work you have done with these two captivating documentaries. Your commitment to shedding light on the lesser-known aspects of the cigar world is truly commendable. The Cuban cigar series was a remarkable exploration, and now with the well-documented history of Trinidad cigars, you have once again showcased your dedication to delivering authentic and insightful content. The depth of research and attention to detail in your films is truly impressive. I was blown away on the last scene, taking a puff of the Trinidad, savor it, pause, smile, put your fedora and then walk away from the camera, perfect. it made me imagine to go and walk with you and talk about life. Your ability to educate, entertain, and captivate audiences is a testament to your talent as a filmmaker. Keep up the fantastic work, Kirby! Greetings from Australia.

The production level put on these videos are simply the best on TH-cam, it's BBC+ level reportage. It's a shame the views are so low, but I get it, since the algorithm doesn't reward tobacco/nicotine videos and unfortunately probably puts in a 18+ category. God bless you Kirby for keep doing it, and providing the best cigar content on YT, the community salute you.

From an interview with Marvin Shanken and Fidel Castro...this is all a false lore:
Shanken: Trinidad. We understand that it is a brand of cigar that is your own personal brand, which you give to diplomats and friends as presents.
Castro: No. I principally give Cohibas for presents.
    Shanken: You don't give Trinidads?
Castro: No. I don't give Trinidads. I give Cohibas. [clipped discussion of new brands]
Shanken: The El Laguito factory has a brand called Trinidad, which they say is for you to give as personal gifts. It has become a legend.
Castro: I am not fully aware of that brand, but I assume it is like the Lancero in size from Cohiba.
Shanken: It is the same size, but with a little darker wrapper. Are you going to allow Cubatabaco to sell it?
Castro: I don't know about that cigar.

Yes! It is an interesting point to make that new world cigars, at least those I saw in the Dominican Republic, are not completely handrolled. A small machine is used to roll the filler and wrap it in the binder. Whereas with Cuban cigars, everything is done by hand... as it has been done since the beginning.

Wow! Another classic from the Kirbster. Thank you so much for this gem. If I understood correctly, that's only 30 rollers for the entire brand production. If so, that explains why Trinidads are so hard to find. I assume you will be at the Habanos Days in London Kirby? Be sure to bring your production team along, it will make a great video or two.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes, only 30 rollers in total rolling Trinidad... and 20 of them are the highest Level 9 category. Quite impressive when you think about it. Trinidad has really maintained it's original exclusivity since it's escaped the heavy commercialization that Cohiba and many of the other brands have undergone...

@kirbyallison true, I just hate how big and intrusive those labels are 🙄

would if pain you to pronounce fundadores less like a Texan? I feel like you’re of a caliber or content producer, and expert, where respecting the pronunciation will help create a more polished product overall. Keep up the great work regardless

You can take the Texan out of Texas, but not the Texas out of the Texan...

LOL "what makes your cigars able to be aged for so long and come out so well?" real answer is they dont age them themselves so they are very green when you as the consumer receive them vs the cigars coming out of "new world" brands.

Habanos just launched an aged program this year, with the inaugural vitola the Fundadores.
And new world cigars are quite green themselves when they hit the shelves…

@@kirbyallison I may be spoiled as I tend to only buy and smoke perdermo and dunbarton manufactured cigars and they are all aged and ready to smoke after the normal week of getting use to their new home in my humidor. Also as a fellow American I’m sure you’re like me and when we have Cubans in our home humidors they tend to sit a lot longer than the new worlds just due to us not being able to bring them into the country anymore. I know I have some that have crested the 10 year mark now….

The Communists sold the tobacco business to the Brits and now nobody can buy a dam cigar not even in Cuba due to the price hikes.
The monthly salary of a regular worker on the island is not even close to the retail sale price of a single cigar.
Everybody, even poor people in Cuba could enjoy their own cigars before Communism, not anymore.

I love watching the rolling process. However, anyone can learn to roll a great cigar with the right leaves. I don’t think the rollers deserve celebrity like status

To this day, the Cubans are the only ones that still roll their cigars "totally by hand." All new world production utilizes a Lieberman bunching device. If it were that easy, everyone would do it...

This is where you have it wrong. I’m supporting the Cuban people, their spirit, and their legacy.
