Great review. Commutative enthusiasm, beautiful landscape, excellent editing and, of course, a car that looks and sounds amazing. I was looking forward to watching this review. It was even better than I thought it would.
Guys, please don't take this the wrong way and maybe you're not reaching out to my demographic, either way, please show some excitement in your delivery. Watching you two is like watching paint dry. I'm not trying to start an argument, just stating my opinion. After a few minutes of watching, I scrubbed through and it was like I hadn't started scrubbing at all, as the whole video is just you two talking about options (or so it seems). You don't need elocution lessons, as you delivery of your script is fine, but so so boring to watch. Very monotone and dare I say it, even the car looked bored. Hope you're both well, onwards and upwards :)
Thanks guys, massive compliment from you channel 👌 Your 8 series video is one of my favourite new car vids on the internet right now, great fee days away with you 👊👊
I will be patient and wait for the Gran Coupe, and I reckon it will be enough of a step up from my current 6 series gran coupe and agree about the seats. they are super comfy!!
Excellent video, as always. BMW seem to do well in this segment, might we see an 8GC soon (what would an 8GC rival? Too big for an A7 or CLS, perhaps the AMG GT?)? Looking forward to a longterm test of an 840d, in UK conditions!
For a road car, weight isn't such a bad thing when the car is well set up. I've driven almost 6000 miles in a 6 series GT and it's stability and handling are great. I can well imagine what this 8 series is like. It's interesting that when the Nissan GTR was designed, there was a minimum weight required.
I think gesture control was an attempt to answer all the issues with finger marks all over the touch screens. But right now it does not work. Also sub level controls within the touch screens are worse than having an old fashioned switches on the dash somewhere, because you can't find it while driving and its more than one click/swipe away. Also should they fail, then it's the whole unit that stops working, not one switch, so generally speaking, I am not a lover of modern touch screens, as you can probably tell. Not everything new is necessarily better. It's just bundled marketing to keep up prices, half of it you will never use after 3 months of ownership. I won't mention the aesthetics of glued on tablets to dashboards and the glare they suffer. Thank you Joe for the megamounts I bought two.. :-)
The 840D makes a lot of sense for company directors and the like - for me the m850i is a tuned down M8 less hardcore and raw but also not a significant improvement over the 840D to justify the price hike, you mentioned the noise and drivability... I reckon buy the 840D to go long distance in a motorway or wait for the M8 for the drivers car. Or just wait 9 months and it will be dirt cheap thanks to depreciation lol
I've seen a couple of your videos, great stuff as usual and it's about time I subscribed which I just did. I'm very impressed with the exhaust note. I can't wait for your video on the GC version. That should solve the rear seat problems.
It’s an interesting car. I want to really love it. From some angles I do, head on it’s a handsome car. I can’t quite get over the rear - it’s far too fussy, way too much going on. It looks like it’s from another car compared to the front - or like two separate teams designed them apart! The interior looks OK. I sat in one recently, it’s nice enough. But it isn’t interesting enough for a car at this price point for me. Compared to an S Class Coupe it’s lacking in drama. Engine on the 850 sounds nice, I’m sure it drives well. A lot of reviews have noted that it doesn’t ride particularly well, which surely is the most basic requirement of a GT car. Combined with that shocking rear leg/head room I can’t see what you are gaining over the previous 6 series. By all accounts they’ve replaced the 6 series with this, raised the price and compromised on a few areas. I’m with you on gesture control - awful system. Give me nicely weighted buttons any day. As you can tell I haven’t made my mind up about the car...at £110k that’s knocking on the door of some serious cars. Considering it offers no rear leg room I would have to take the brand new 911...
Josh! Firstly I want to congratulate you on winning my M2 milliage competition, I have tried contacting you via Instagram, but might have the wrong Josh Charlie 😂 Drop me an email mate joe@joeachilles.com You make some really valid points, for me the £72k 840D makes a far stronger case for itself. I think the overall ride quality for both cars is great, but.... We were on beautiful Spanish roads, not buggered UK ones 🤣 Cheers man and look forward to hearing from you 👌
Joe Achilles mate you legend yes it’s me, I accepted your friend request but I rarely log on to Instagram over the past few months been so busy with other things - must have missed your message!!! Can’t believe I won haha thanks man, will send an email right over 🙏🙏 agree regards the 840d, the price difference to the 850 is vast. Surely the 840 is 9/10ths of the same experience. Thanks again Joe and absolutely loving all your videos. One of the very few I actively watch now on TH-cam 👍👍
Well said! I agree; Not enough interesting interior and the gesture control (and touch buttons) is such a gimmick, real quality buttons is where it’s at.
Question for you Joe - when you got in the back was the drivers seat in the right place for you in order for you to get in the back? I have 2 small kids and thinking about an M850i but concerned about space
I dont want to sound boring or like a psychofan / fanboy again.... But Im waiting for Alpina version (B8 probably) :) I think 650-700hp, ~900Nm, over 200-210mph is possible. I wish they make something special, even above their current models. The 8 badge and the history of that model just require such move.
BMW is still the true drivers car. They are razor focused on performance. New gesture controls have worked perfectly. It’s the operators not knowing how to work it so blaming the feature is unprofessional.
Thank you, many of these launches you don't get a choice and have to share. But saying that Stef is a good friend of mine and I love his stuff, so we figured why not make the most of the situation... Cheers Joe
My 440i, black with full M performance kit, black alloys, black kidney grills and icon headlights looks 90% the same as this and cost less than half...
stubones friend uses it in his g30 all the time lol and its not sloppy at all considering what it is. Even gets the hands when itd dark out. Impressive tech. Planning on ordering f90 comp in springish time and ill have that on the car.
I really want to like it....I do in some respects but......why so big? Just make it a two seater so it can be smaller because the back seat is useless and between the 7 and the 6 series....they can swing a 2 seater flagship. Also, it looks like a stretched out 4 series a bit...which isn't a bad thing but for that kind of money I wish they put more effort into making it look more special.
Its a sick car but i still dont trust the n63 in this thing. Give it a few years similar issues as the old 650i and 550i will pop up on these. Sick car but if youre spending that kind of money you might aswell buy the m8. You wont have reliability issues and will have a much faster car.
@@JoeAchilles1 i personally would never get the 911. It just looks so dated imo and doesnt have a V8. Don't like the front at all. But I bet It drives great.
Im trying to get a feel for what BMW was conveying with the design of this M850i interior. To purposely go for an understated look well that I can see!
I thought i’d never say this about a BMW engine: finally a BMW that sounds meaner than AMG!
Looking forward to the M8 CS! I'm sure it's coming.
Yeah potentially, M8 is on its way very soon, would be cool to see something more extreme after that 👌
@@JoeAchilles1 Bit of a shame the M8 doesn't look like the concept we all saw though!
@@JoeAchilles1 reveal is coming soon
Ace vid as always. Sounds like an AMG which is no bad thing at all!
Thank you, yeah soundtrack is decent with this one 👌
Great review. Commutative enthusiasm, beautiful landscape, excellent editing and, of course, a car that looks and sounds amazing.

Joe I love your videos man, straight up no nonsense honest real reviews, love it man. I don't usually Subscribe to anyone but you just got a new sub
Thank you buddy, I try to be as "me" and honest as possible. Cheers for the sub, appreciate it 👌
Saw the 840d in the flesh today at Sytner in Sheffield. Beautiful car.
I saw it on Thursday at my local Sytner in Essex. 100% agree with you. Can't imagine how good an M850i would look in the flesh!
You’ve got a brilliant way of getting good, honest feedback across of what a car’s actually like. Another great video
Thanks guys, massive compliment from you channel 👌 Your 8 series video is one of my favourite new car vids on the internet right now, great fee days away with you 👊👊
Everything thing about this new 8 I love it’s gorgeous. I’ve seen pictures of the new M8. It’s not a super car but it still looks mean af.
Good to hear, it really is stunning from some angles in real life 👌
Yes Joe, great video thought Stef was Louis Suarez
Sat in an M850 recently. Very comfortable and yes, my first response was “Ooo! shiny.” Also coming from an M2 Comp owner.
Great stuff, was waiting for a proper drivers vid on the 8series. Well done!
congratulations on 40k, Joe👍...great collab with Stef👊...love the 8 series, looks awesome👌

Wife and I love the gesture control in her G01 X3 M40i.
You should do a BMW Classic review with an 850 CSi.
The digital cockpit isn’t as good as Audi or Mercedes offering but overall the interior is a great step up. Looking forward to the M8.
Very nice review Joe, I enjoyed watching that.
Absolute beauty
I recently purchased this car in convertible and I Love the shifter!!!
Great vid. Loving the roads and location 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Thank you, yeah location was on point 👌
Spain???
You two work together very well! It must be said.😊
The go pro on the front, from the view inside the car out, looks like an old Cadillac bonnet badge sticking up.
Haha it does too!
Really great job again mate, really loving the 8 series 👌🏻

I can't wait for mine to arrive in februari 2019!!
Same specs, only with the personalized black leather interior for me.

Christopher Bell i just changed my 6GT for an M850i. There is a huge difference, 8 is so much sportier. And its sound is amazing.
@@csongordudas8745 Enjoy your car - I'm sure you will :)
top vid again. can't wait for the new x5 vid that car looks mad
If I was buying this I wouldn’t want 4 adults or kids in the back. Me and the open road to enjoy.

Very unfortunate that M8 engine will have different firing order like M5....this sounds like a proper V8!
Sounds like a very well engineered car, I can't wait to see what Alpina do with it 😍

Really like that deep grumble, mirrors look a bit boring and uninteresting. Nice video Joe
The gear shift is beautiful but too luxurius for an 8 series. Something suitable for the 7 series and Mercedes benz.
