    Great book. I was having trouble with my abstract algebra and analysis classes back when I was a junior. I took a step back and took a discrete math class with this book. Saved my math career and ended up with a master's degree later. Highly recommended.

    I am currently reading this book and it is not an "easy read"! Some of the proofs are long and reference other proofs, much of it is very abstract, often you cannot "visualize" what the explanation says, and it has fewer examples than one would like, so if you cannot follow the logic of the argument it is really hard to understand... that being said it is a very good book.. I'm not a mathematician but it feels that it doesn't skip any steps. it's just not easy... almost half way through, I just realized that if I read the examples before the proof, understanding the proof becomes easier. So that's my advice, if you get stuck in the explanations and proofs, skip to the example(s), then go back.

      @@oviphoenix5996 the table of contents he went over at the start of the video show what exactly is in this book. It seems it has fundamental concepts of formal logic at the beginning, the basis for arithmetic operations, some basic number theory such as sequences and the binomial theorem, and then it transitions down-the-line into logic structures, summarily ending the discussion at logic trees.
      If you want information on vectors and matrices, calculus-related concepts, and statistics, I would recommend books pertaining directly to those subjects. Discrete Mathematics is simply the logical foundation of mathematics, not a reformatting of all of mathematics from the standpoint of the logic of discrete mathematics.

    I'm a legal translator and had confrontational, if not hostile, relations with my both math teachers in secondary school. They were verbally abusive, always pressurizing you into solving equations and problems with the speed of light. Although my average grade in math was the equivalent of the American "B," that was my most hated subject. Back then, I thought mathematicians were all neurotic and emotionally unbalanced. (A wrongful induction based on two instances only. But those were all the mathematicians known to me at the time.) After school, I got acquainted with a good, sensible person; what stroke me most was that he was a math teacher. Then, I learned there did exist normal people among mathematicians. Later, I came to the conclusion that the two teachers of mine had been exceptions to the rule.
    After watching some of your videos on math books, I took up a new hobby. In my leisure time, I now solve math problems-it is a rewarding change of activity for my brain. Its linguistic area is partying and chilling out while the mathematical one is being given some job to do.
    A great job you do and a true teacher you are. My respect and best wishes!!!

Another similarly overpriced book to avoid for the same reason is Morris, Quantitative Approaches for Business studies; in my experience of Morris's book, the promise of extra resources is ONLY accessible if you have your tutor sign up. There is no mention of this in the book. 🤷‍♀️ Buy second-hand, or find another book.

I would like more explanations of sets can be organized and more explanations in appendix V, more proofs. I’ll keep studying it and hopefully this will prepare me when I get into more complicated stuff like calculus. You mentioned in your learn math from start to finish video that people pick up Stewart or spivak and can’t understand it because they don’t have a solid grounding in proofs so I’m hoping I’ll get that here with this book and the one by chartrand, polimeni, and zhang.

      It is true that you need proof writing experience for Spivak's Book but thats because Spivaks calc book is more of a preparation book for real analysis. For stewards or Larsons books you don't really need proof writing experience. For Calculus trigonomery is the most important but starting with discrete math will make the transition into higher math easier beyond calculus. but for calc trig is the most important.

    IMO, "discrete math" is one of those subjects that, unfortunately, can't be learned from books in quite the same way as more "theoretical" branches like algebra, analysis, or topology. Probably the best advice for the youngster who dreams of achieving greatness as a combinatorist is to work nonstop on contest math problems all throughout high school, while your teachers babble on about history, literature, physics, calculus, or why they're concerned that you're a lazy, isolated underachiever who's in danger of repeating their BS class, yet again.

    • @defunct1373
      @defunct1373 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      OMG THAT IS SO TRUE. Combinatorics is 99% just intuition and educated guesses, which can only come by doing a _shit_ ton of problems.

    Hi professor, do you suggest taking discrete math before advanced calculus (as I'm finishing your Cal 3 course on Udemy very soon)?
    It's always a high priority for me to make the learning curve gentle and soft even though I'm confident in combating difficult problems.
    Thank you!

    There is a differential equations book called "Differential Equations and Linear Algebra" by Furlow. I get as excited about Furlow as he does when he presents this book. It covers differential equations and systems of differential equations organized into matrices. Its very easy to read and excellent for learning differential equations. If you are trying to review good books for students being introduced to DE, it's and excellent book. He has reviewed so many excellent DE books so he may not review it. Furlow has better topics then Zill and is a better read then Boyce/Diprima.

    Currently working through the 5th Ed. Almost one third into it. Very good. My only slight criticism is some parts do so much hand holding that they are slightly redundant/repetitive. Book of Proof by Hammcok offers many of the same topics, but I found it more concise. This book covers a lot of additional material though. However, it’s definitely better to err on the side of overexplaining rather than under-explaining, so not a big drawback.

    Can anyone recommend a solid online Course for Discrete Math? For some reason the Discrete Math courses are being broken apart into smaller courses. I really like this book. I wish I had started with this book. IMO this class should be mandatory course for everyone starting college.

    What are some pre-req's you recommend before jumping into Discrete Math? Was looking into going back to school soon and have been out of Math for 5-8+ years depending on the course, and looking to re-learn things I need to as I see Discrete Math is one of the first courses in the curriculum.

      I think most schools require like calculus 2 as a prereq but honestly it's completely unrelated to this. I think you could just jump into it

      Especially with a book like this. Susanna is really good, I can't believe how much easier this is compared to the others. It's still really tough but in comparison to most other books this is perfect for beginners.

      Ya try to get it used it's cheap if it's older and used, for example on bookfinder.com it's less than 10 dollars probably. Worst case scenario you have a book that is a bit too difficult but still worth owning for later. It starts from the beginning of math too with logic. This is maybe something you have never seen and it's really cool and different.

      @wizard7314 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Linear Algebra, matrices, Taylor approximations, Fourier Transformation, Linear Analysis, Calculus, Variational Calculus, Classical Physics, Lagrangian Mechanics, Hamiltonian Mechanics, Quantum mechanics. For QFT also need classical field theory, special relativity and intro to General Relativity. I may have missed some.

    I'm completing a Bachelor of IT [IS Major] but I'm a masochist I guess so I'm going to give the main discrete math unit a go next semester and see how I do lmao [despite it not even being required for my major]. I did have one unit with graph theory and I actually enjoyed it so wonder how the rest will be.
    If I do pass most likely will switch my major to CS/and or keep my major as IS and then go and get a master of computer science or master of cyber security after my undergad.

    Greetings Dear Warlock of Maths,
