Kingdom Hearts III - Insomnia Mod, Versus XIII Tribute Trailer

- Hello! It's been a while since the last trailer, but I can finally show you what I've been working on in the past few months!
As you can see... Night time is here! I really wasn't sure if I'd be able to do this as most people in the modding community expected it to not be possible, but I'm pretty happy with what I managed to do, and I hope you will find it good too.
I started trying to set up a night scene because I really wanted to see the Versus XIII tower at night, and I managed to do the whole city like this, which was quite the challenge, but got us closer to that VS XIII vibe. I know a lot of people wanted night time.
Talking about the Versus XIII Tower, Caelum Via is indeed part of the mod! I already did show some of this when I was modeling it, but you can now see more of it in gameplay. It was really important for me to have this iconic location to be playable, and I am quite happy with the result.
There are also expanded areas so you can go from the citadel to Caelum Via without any loading transition.
If you can spot some frame drops in the trailer, it's related to my GPU (GTX 1080) struggling to keep up with the resolution for this trailer, but I have a steady 60fps in 1080p.
Now, I know that you might ask me how far along I am, if it's going to be finished soon etc, so I'll try to answer that:
- If we're only talking about the map itself (the 3D scene, in Blender), I would say that I am at maybe... 85% done? It depends on what I keep adding / expanding, but I think I'm kind of reaching my limit now and will most likely settle with the areas I set up so far, but improving their details, especially the borders of the map which still contain too much low res out of bounds details that I want to make look better for my expanded areas.
- This is actually a "test" scene in Unreal Engine, not the final one, and once I will have completely finished the city in Blender, I will make a new scene to re import everything from scratch into a new clean project. This might sound hardcore but it's the best way for optimizing the process. A lot of the work will be much faster when doing this though now that I know how I did all these things. Figuring out obstacles is really time consuming.
- After the final version of the map is finished and set up properly in Unreal Engine for the game, the map itself will be finished. If we're "only" talking about this, then I think I might be at around 80% completion. However, there are still a few things I would like to figure out, like how to implement the map directly into the game (like through gummi ship) without having to use a console command, have proper save points, set up combat encounters, better NPC behaviors, etc... Things to make the map feel more legit, but this might take a lot of time, depending if someone in the community is able to tell me how to do such things or not.

I'm not gonna lie, this is the coolest thing that I've ever seen. This rules. Thank you. I can't even imagine how much work has gone into it, I know making it work at night was a huge undertaking on its own, let alone everything else you showed off. This is so good.

Making the night version was indeed quite the task, and there are still several things I need to improve / tweak, lot of obstacles everywhere that get me stuck because of how modding works on KH3 (like we can't use our own custom materials, we can only make material instances of dummied materials that already exists inside the game, which makes things really complicated, like even just transparency or emissive materials is a challenge in itself), so with all this, you can imagine how a night time, with so many lights and effects, is even more complicated that it should be 😵
One issue I still have for example is that there are several transparent buildings for the background in Insomnia, flat transparent meshes, and I haven't found an existing material that allow me to have both transparency and emissive at the same time, so for now they aren't lighted up, it's little dumb issues like this all the time lol And the struggle it was to get the aquarium in the middle of the VS XIII tower to be lighted up, transparent and in the right color, ugh, took me days.

I’m not a Kingdom Hearts fan, but as a fan of FF15 I got recommended this video and I’m just blown away! At first it reminded me how much we lost but it’s a sign of how much we still have, and with enough love we can restore some of what we lost from this game. Amazing mod!

Kh4 is gonna take versus 13 and remix it
Insomnia map is a HUGE waste of assets. You can tell it's a massive model made with a huge budget and detail for the game plus the King's Glaive movie it came with. Final Fantasy 15 should've gotten us to access and explore insomnia and Tenebrae with rooftop jumping like in the Ardyn DLC before leaving it. Not some cutscene bullcrap, to add insult to injury they did the same thing with FF Origin where talking to civilians needs to be through afucking menu. This ain't a Neptunia Game. Hopefully in the future where devs aren't lazy they'll reboot and remake FF15 like what they did to FF7.
it wasn’t laziness on 15s part. the final version of 15 was developed in an insanely short amount of time for a game of its volume (around 2 years)
To be honest Cornelia did not need to be fully explorable in Stranger of Paradise. I prefer how they did it because it means less time is wasted.
No matter how many times I look at it, Insomnia always gives me a unique feelings. Somehow it feels like a real city unlike any other city design in other games.

It was so much struggle to make my custom sky spheres, but I'm pretty happy with it now, at least for day time, I think night time still needs some tweaks but it's getting there.

I've always considered olympus coliseum mod as the most amazing creation the community made, but this is delightful man, I think is fair to say the title is already yours now, you even added npcs... Just wow 🤩
Thank you! However the coliseum mod is very impressive on other aspects, how it's coded, the new features it's provide etc... This is stuff that I personally don't know how to do and that's extremely complicated, so I think the olympus coliseum mod will remain the best one if we're talking about new interactive content with progression etc... But if you're only talking about a new map to play in, then I'll take the compliment 🥰 My mod will have some fights and maybe a few secrets if I can put some here and there, but for many people it probably won't be as engaging as the coliseum mod, because it's essentially a new world to have your own fun in. I would do a full story progression if I could, I even wrote all of the events that would happened, how it would happen etc if I'd ever be able to do that, but it's too complicated and something that doesn't seem very doable for one person through KH modding with all its limitations and complications.
@@Larxia Is good to know how much dedication and love you're pouring into this mod, and yup in terms of exploration and visuals I think this will be the best, the night time version looks beautiful! 🌙 I'm not too much into modding, only did a few swaps here and there, but I imagine the limitations through modding without source code indeed, but I think this makes a good standard of what we would probably see inside quadratum when KH4 releases in terms of full explorable city, well done!
The Kingdom Hearts modder community might not be the biggest one ive seen so far, but the community is full of GENIUS PEOPLE! AMAZING!!! I Love FF15 aswell, and this is so great!!! Dont overwork yourself!! THANKS FOR YOUR WORK! This mod and the young xehanorth by Kurasanick are the ones i will play at day 1!

This is really something special, VS XIII / XV / Insomnia is something that many of us have a very particular affection to, so reading messages from people who really like my work on this is heart warming, I'm glad you like my vision of it and that I can somehow help people who are like me sad about the cancellation of VS XIII.
Our hearts won't let go! I hope so too that Nomura can do this one day. The ending of KH3 got me super excited, felt like living a dream.
I hope he will realise this wish through Verum Rex. It's clear he has a great attachment to Versus even now. And the fans do as well.

This is beautiful work! Ive always wanted to explore insomnia with actual pedestrians present and with all the building lights on. And the fact that we’re able to go inside the citadel. 🔥🔥beautiful work

I have also always wanted to explore Insomnia in its glory, before the war, with life in it. Sadly for me making the night version wasn't as easy as just turning on the lights😅
The NPCs are however very limited so far, they just stay in idle pose, I try to pose them in ways that look kind of natural enough, but I haven't managed to get them to have a more complex behavior, I'm not sure if I'll be able to improve it, not without help.

this is absolutely amazing. im replaying ffxv for the first time since royal release, but first time playing on steam where ive modded the city to be more vibrant. but its still nothing like this. the thought of fighting yozora in insomnia would be a dream

@@RewindGPs It depends what you mean by "improved a lot", I'm still really proud of what I did in thug pro, and I don't think I could do much better than what I did back then, especially on Baltimore. You probably might be more impressed by the visuals here, but here I'm also modding a game from 2019, while in thug pro I was modding a game with a PS2 engine, so the possibilities for graphics weren't the same ^^ I'm not sure if I "improved", it's a different thing here.
I have something in the work for THUG but kind of on hold for now.

This is so beautiful. Really congratulations, I like everything about this video. Every time I read written Versus XIII, a tear falls. Yeah honestly even other people in the KH modding community told me it wasn't possible and I should give up on that, but I managed to do it with some tricks and I think the result is quite decent, but it was really a LOT of work lol

Seriously, you're amazing, this is looking sooo good, and all of this with a 1080
Ahah, well it was a lot of work and I wasn't sure it would be possible, didn't seem like it from my first attempts and people in the kh modding community told me it wouldn't be possible, but after lot of experimentation, various tricks etc, I managed to get a result that I think starts to be decent.
The GTX 1080 can still handle lot of games in 1080p, but here in higher resolution for the trailer it was a lot more complicated, it also gives me issues when working on the scene because of the 8gb of vram, I got a BSOD not long ago because of vram overload. Better gpu would be good but the current price of gpus, especially with high vram, is insane and I can't afford that, so I'm staying with the 1080 as long as I can.
@@Larxia And here i am with a 4070 doing nothing, so i was wondering, is there anything i can do to help? Like, some "easier" or rather, fast to grasp understand and work on, tasks? Or maybe, a fast way to learn how to model and start working on the gummiship world model, or if not, a way to offer you a coffe at least
@@GuitarGamerRPG That's nice of you 🙂 Thank you. However there isn't much I can think of, the most demanding tasks are when working on the whole main scene, modifying the materials and such, so it's not really something I can let someone else do without knowledge of the whole project and also working on the main project files (which is like 40gb of lot of files that would take forever to transfer), so I don't really think someone can help me performance wise.
If you were good with character modeling / modding, or programing in unreal engine to help me creates specific scripted sequences etc, I'd take the help, but that's not related to performance, more like someone else helping on tasks that I'm not good with.
For the gummiship world icon, I haven't even managed to get to that point yet, so I don't think it's worth working on it as long as I don't have it working, I hope I'll get that, but for now it's not something done.
About the "way to offer a coffe", if you mean a donation, I'm not against it as I could use the help, but only if you're comfortable with it and can afford it, it's always a bit uncomfortable talking about money like this 😅 If you really want to, you can send me anything you want at:

@@Larxia The problem is time, i like to do a lot of things, and i'd love to do more, but all i end up to do is sit and play videogames when i'm not working, wish i can get back all the time i wasted doing nothing during the pandemic, i could have spent those 2 years learning japanese, or 3d modeling, but, i wouldn't say i was depressed but near there, not having a job was devastating, and overall, had the time but not the money or will to do things and now, the situation is reversed ahah

A Fullmetal Alchemist (2003 and Brotherhood) Mod would be neat. I always wanted Sora to team up with Edward and Alphonse against Lyra/Dante, Father, and their Homunculi. The location could be Central City, where Dante's Underground City could be explored as well.

What? What do you mean base of san fransokyo? There's nothing from San Fransokyo in this map aside from the placeholder NPCs. There's nothing from the Yozora Fight / quadratum either 😅 This is all from either FF XV or added by me to expand it, like the district around the VS XIII tower and the tower itself.

Ignis was an absolute savage in that trailer. Really wanted to see him concoct a plan to destroy the empire based on this early version of him, but Ardyn got there ahead of him
@@Larxia Yeah. There's a part in one of the Versus trailers were Noctis jumps into a Magitek. Basically the same thing.

So is your Project XIV mod! I got so excited seeing Xion, Roxas, and Axel's idle animations in the camp menu. You've got to love Donald and Goofy but there's something really special about having a party consisting of 3 keyblade wielders.

Holly.... I really wish we got Versus XIII. Dont get me wrong I like 15. But the original art design and tone was something else with Versus XIII. I never really had any interest with kingdom hearts before I saw Verum rex and found out that the series was directed by tetsuya nomura. I've been meaning to play it. If I do I for sure would be downloading this mod. Its amazing on another level.

This is what FF15 should’ve been. I need this. Not sure if it’s possible but it would be cool if you could change the weapon animations/effects or whatever its called. Feels sort of weird seeing noctis have like star effects and stuff. Other than that looks absolutely stunning

Hello, why you don't try to do the same thing in Final Fantasy XV main game? To play this in Insomnia?
We can't mod maps into Final Fantasy XV sadly, modding is very limited there. You can only do things like, changing weapons / character models, some scripts, things like this, but you can't mod environments.

Imagine using AI Voice acting, add Custom Cutscenes, and using chatGPT to make a custom Kingdom Hearts Story and DAMN Square would shit there pants
You don't need ChaptGPT to make up a story though lol I actually wrote what the events / story would be for that world if I was able to make such thing, but sadly it's not really possible (without a full team and full time months of work).

This is about as close to Kingdom Hearts 4 as we can get. This is basically what Verum Rex will look like in a nut shell! I can’t wait to run around as Yozora killing enemies in Quadratum! Makes me sad we will never get Final Fantasy Versus 13! Noctis got done dirty! Hopefully Verum Rex can be the versus 13 game we never got. Or something at least close to it! Thank you so much for making something like this! All the Versus Fans out there will surely appreciate this mod! My ❤ Won’t Let Go!

this looks very fucking impressive. FFXV is literally a fallen angel tht had so much potential. nd to think it had several more dlcs planned if it wasnt for dragging a corpse into the light to be burned on once more. Love the level of detail, nd especially tht building w the stairs in it from when we first saw Noctis nd Stella from FFVSXIII. who's the protagonist of this trailer? Obv Riku model slapped on Sora but wuts ur explanation.
There's not really any explanation so far lol If I could have I would have used Noctis, but there's no good mod for playable Noctis out there, so I'm just using this noctis themed Riku to fit the trailer atmosphere.

@@Larxia I think they mean the fact that v13 was like... edgy-er in its looks (maybe)? Granted we only saw insomnia at night in the v13 trailers.
But it's fine, tbh the best look at insomnia we have is through the media of ffxv which had a different atmosphere to versus 13 you did a great job man.

@@Larxia Ah right, I always forget Twilight Town exists as a level in KH3. Are they just placeholders until you bring in FF15 models, or are they there to stay?
@@vadandrumist1670 Not sure yet... But character modding is not something I have experience with in KH3, and we're talking about dozens and dozens of character if I were to bring custom NPCs from FF XV, at this point honestly it's too much for one person.
Working with NPC is already incredibly complicated, it was a big struggle to get these to load, and their "AI" / script is extremely limited so far, I'm not sure what I'll be able to do with it, but it's a complicated subject that no one in the community really know how to improve either.

It's just one of the ad posters that's in FF XV, she does really look like Stella yes, probably intentionnal.
I actually wanted to have Stella somewhere in this trailer but I'm not experienced with character modeling / modding so I haven't been able to make her for the trailer.
@@Larxiato be honest I think Stella looks better than the redesign which is Luna. And I also think Stella looks better than the nameless star. I’m so sad her character design got put to waste! They never used Stella and probably never will! I also prefer noctis’s final fantasy versus 13 design over his final fantasy 15 design! Everyone looked better in their versus 13 design!
Nomura said he wanted to make Stella look pretty and he succeeded! I’m sad all their versus 13 designs never got used! I’m sad their story never got told! Hope Verum Rex does final fantasy versus 13 justice.
