- This is a detailed video explaining the function of the Bosch fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure damper in the D Jetronic and K Jetronic fuel systems. The video shows how to test both items and highlights the symptoms of a faulty fuel pressure regulator and damper. Having the correct fuel pressure is absolutely critical to the efficient running of your older mercedes with D Jetronic and K Jetronic fuel systems.
Nice video, Mike. When I did my fuel system, I installed a new pres reg and new Damper (from various global locations in eBay). I paid someone to clean and flow test all 7 Injectors and I bought new rubber seals for them which were hard to find. I disassembled and cleaned my old fuel pump. The only issues I had were a few fuel leaks from a few of the 100 or so hose clamps and one bad injector. Fuel pressure was good out of the box. Can't wait for yours to get running!
Thanks for your comment...I feel we are getting closer to starting the old girl. Funny you should mention the fuel clips, because every time I buy a bag of 10 horribly expensive stainless steel fuel clamps....I always discover more jubilee clips that I need to replace! Mike
Another excellent and highly informative post Mike. Thank you
Thanks! Mike
Excellent information and presentation Mike! Thanks so much!
Thanks for your kind comment! Cant wait to get the car running like she should. Mike
Excellent useful and clear information.
Thanks - that is very kind if you to say so. Mike
If the fuel pressure damper fails could it cause a misfire?
Unlikely. What make model and year is your car. Misfire is generally related to fuel injectors, trigger points or ignition leads. Mike
Very interesting video ! Do you think these fuel pressure regulator could be replaced by modern unit found on eBay for very cheap ? On latest Kjetronic the fuel pressure regulator is more than 400€ from Bosch, where a standard fuel regulator (you can set the pressure) is less than 40€.
Impatient to see your car running !
Hi - Good to hear from you. I have wondered the same, and have been exploring alternatives to the Bosch. For me, it has been a matter of getting one small enough not to look out of place. One day, I'll actually get round to paying some attention to my silver K Jetronic 280SL...Mike
I understand the regulator, but now I don't know how to set the fuel damper
Hi - Good question.
Bosch fuel dampers are generally set at the factory and shouldn't really need to be adjusted. I'll see if anyone out there has ever adjusted (or tested!) one and how you measure the effectiveness of any changes you make,
Mike
Excellent as usual. Would you please update us with restore/repair of the bad pressure regulator and maybe the fuel vent valve under the rear left axle (the excessive pressure buildup in the fuel tank). Thanks
Thanks for your comment...and yes, I plan to do a follow up on whether I can bring my fuel pressure regulator back to life....and if not, whether a modern alternative can be used.
What car do you have (make model and year)
...and why are you getting excessive pressure build up in the tank?
Mike
I have a 1973 450SL D-Jetronic US model. After many years sitting in about 5-7 years ago I replaced fuel pump , all the soft hoses and fuel injectors. Fuel tank was removed and cleaned professionally. Car runs good yet does not take it out for driving till other issues and registration is taken care of. However many leaks started to occur around soft hose connection near pump when car starts after few days not running. It is possible hoses are deteriorating again due to ethanol. Leaks will stop after turning off the car. I get the famous whooshing sound when fuel cap removed. After what you said about newer pumps have more pressure made me thinking that maybe leaks are occurring due to that. I have not checked the pressure regulator nor the vent valve under left rear axle, nor the vent line for the blockage. I read some recommend to use high pressure hoses. But I think the hose clamps still will be the weak links. Sorry for the long reply.@@MikesMercsandothercars
Hi - the D Jetronic fuel pumps are very distinctive. Have a look under your car and see if your pump looks like the one pictured in the video below:
th-cam.com/video/srvBSoYbUK8/w-d-xo.html
The outlet pipe is at a right angle to the pump - on later pumps, the outlet comes straight out the back of the pump.
If you have a later pump working at 5-6 bar instead of 2-3 bar, that could account for fuel leaks and pressurising your tank.
If it was me, I would also consider adding a small fuel pressure gauge just before the cold start injector. They don't cost much and you will instantly be able to see whether your car is running at the correct fuel pressure of 2.1 bar.
Mike
Thanks for the link. Oh boy, I may be out of luck. I did the pump about 3-5 years ago. initially tried to make it work but was not running but after few hit on the body did worked but was leaking from the seam lower than the top you took off on yours. I may have saved the pump. Not sure. Try to find it tomorrow. I have seen after marked fuel pump regulator that some use on VW and smaller cars. would you recommend such devices or better start hunting for a used pump. Car does runs good but down the road the pump may cause other problems other than the leak. The replacement as far as I remember did not needed any modification for installation. Ports were same as the old one.@@MikesMercsandothercars
What country are you in? I may be able to point you in the right direction for a replacement pump if need be.
I have yet to try a different style of fuel pump regulator...but I will once I get this project car running properly. Mike Mike@@siamak1
