James had essentially outshined Ken during his briefer appearance on the show and you could tell that this tournament meant a LOT to Ken. And in the end Ken deserved to win; although he humbly and correctly stated that with just a different question here, or a contrasting category there, the outcome could easily have been different. And Brad's style of buzzing in just didn't work versus James and Ken; it wasn't that he missed that many answers (although a couple Double Jeopardy moments definitely set him back).

Then EP Mike Richards said in an interview he called Alex the day before what ended up being his last taping day to check up on him knowing he had just had surgery about 2 weeks earlier to see if he was going to be able to host to which Alex said "Well, I was able to eat solid food for the first time in a few days so yeah I'm good to go." To which Mike said "That's great but it doesn't mean you can handle a full day's taping, we can easily postpone...." But Alex insisted on going ahead as scheduled.
He has also said going into those last months they could tell he wouldn't be able to go on much longer but knew Alex would keep going until he couldn't physically do it anymore and didn't think it was appropriate to look for a new host while he was still going.

it's a shame. In his prime he was the winningest Jeopardy contestant (in terms of tournament wins) in history. He essentially retired from the game for years, only to return for this tournament due to Trebek's bout with Cancer. But after so many years (where the game changed a LOT, especially due to James' shift in strategy), he was so out of practice he couldn't remain competitive. He absolutely deserved to be in the GOAT tournament, but had no real chance of winning. It's like if Babe Ruth facing off against the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff. It's not that he's talented, it's just the game has moved on so drastically.
