Scrap metal prices were very low in the decades following WWII. The military was modernizing rapidly and scraping ships and other military equipment. When the value of scrap metal jumped in the 1990s. Old cars and other large scrap sitting out in fields was carted off the yards. It is amazing as this turned into an unmentioned national clean up. But up until then, it just wasn't worth saving metal (from a small business point of value).
