Every year, Hollywood producers ask the Pentagon for help in making films, seeking everything from locations and technical advice to Blackhawk helicopters and nuclear-powered submarines. The military will happily oblige, it says in an army handbook, so long as the movie "aid[s] in the recruiting and retention of personnel."
The producers want to make money; the Defense Department wants to make propaganda. Former Hollywood Reporter staffer Robb explores the conflicts resulting from these negotiations in this illuminating though sometimes tedious study of the military-entertainment complex over the last 50 years. Robb shows how, in the Nicholas Cage film Windtalkers, the Marine Corps strong-armed producers into deleting a scene where a Marine pries gold teeth from a dead Japanese soldier (a historically accurate detail).
At its worst, the author argues, the Pentagon unscrupulously targets children; Robb reveals how the Defense Department helped insert military story lines into the Mickey Mouse Club. To help, Robb suggests a schedule of uniform fees by which producers could rent aircraft carriers, F-16s & the like. It's an intriguing idea, though producers can go it alone: as Robb points out, blockbusters Forrest Gump, An Officer & a Gentleman & Platoon were all made without military assistance.

I only found out months back but Full Metal Jacket was actually a British film It could be ignorance on my part but from what I see British films don't tend to gloss over things they tell it how it is.

HBO's the Pacific thankfully did not hide the fact that Marines stole gold teeth. In the Thin Red Line it's also shown (more suggested) when you see a marine holding pliers while he's taunting a wounded Japanese officer.
Pearl Harbour was ridiculous, purely pretentious militaristic pride, which is a shame considering the large budget and lavish set design/cinematography. Why can't we have more films in the same style as Tora Tora Tora or A Bridge too Far, where facts WEREN'T pushed aside for stupid love triangles!

Just 3 quick points. #1, *"The Land Of The Free & Home Of The Brave"* that was literally founded on the rotting corpses of the 70,000,000 Native Americans genocided out of the way has incomprehensible Reality issues. #2, Coppola's remastered and at last restored full-length *APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX* on DVD puts the theatrical release cut-down totally in the shade. #3, I'm 95% sure that's actor George Takei standing plenty close enough to John Wayne; the irony is monumental.

I only liked First Blood but got it completely wrong, had always thought it was an anti Establishment movie, (the Army will use you and dump you, the police brutality etc), but Stallone said it was specifically about the "heroes" coming back from Vietnam and being treated, unfairly, like criminals and murderers by the American people.

War is definitely complicated mostly due to the death factor of course. I think you and I are on the same page. Obviously our military cannot overthrow every dictatorship. I see four or five documentaries on TH-cam about the relationship between the United States Armed Forces and American cinema. We need to remember that everyone in the United States has freedom of expression, including filmmakers and the military. The pentagon has every right to control who they want (or don't want) to lend their equipment to. If a filmmaker is denied access to military equipment for their films I do not see how that is a problem. With CGI there is no real need for them.

TheBiddofslayer58 Not a conspiracy. Just the military having an vested interest in a positive portrayal, and of course they will try to sway movie makers in this pursuit. It is just basic PR, not a conspiracy. Now, one can agree or disagree that it is something the military should do, but it really isn't a conspiracy theory.
