    People complain about Grunty Industries but having recently gone through it again on Switch, I think it's genius! It's this incredible puzzlebox of a world that feels so satisfying to complete.
    To offer a comparison, I'd put Grunty Industries up there alongside some of Zelda's finest dungeons. It's that intricate, that well-crafted and that satisfying to explore/solve.

    I wouldn't say people "hate it" as much as people are reasonably critical about some of the design decisions for the game, but it's still a very solid game, arguably better than Kazooie in more ways than worse. Though I think what's probably happening is like Mario Sunshine and NUMEROUS Sonic games, a lot of the "hate" comes from people who didn't grow up with these games and saw the negative reviews and based their opinions on that to cash in on making a popular blog/video using points regurgitated from people who never were fans of the game. (based on the AVGN era where a lot of people felt it was popular to bash games unapologetically, not realizing the humor from James Rolfe was that he was making fun of GAMERS who overreact to bad games and most of the actual flaws of the games were genuine, James said himself he doesn't actually hate the games he plays for the most part, he's just pretending to be a terrible gamer who gets angry too easily for fun and to revisit the old games he played as a kid.).
    That said though I think as adults we can accept some of the critical flaws of these games a lot more than we used to as we dive into retrospectives and remember frustrating points and also even change our minds about certain things (like I used to HATE Grunty Industries cause it was a hard and confusing level, but as an adult I kind of appreciate more what they were trying to do with the level and it's one of the more interesting ones. I'd kind of argue Terrydactyland is the worst, but I wouldn't say I dislike the level at all, just the least appealing due to the vertical design and you don't really use the dinosaur transformation for much except an annoying memory puzzle and scaring ONE NPC which is disappointing. and unlike other levels, there isn't much to do as far as puzzles go beyond fetch quests, which most of the jiggies are in this stage.
    Still rare did admit that they focused too much on scaling up stages because "bigger is better" but it did lead to a lot of traversing around to find everything. I personally found the backtracking to be fine though, since you usually had multiple reasons to return to older stages as you learn new moves all the way up to CloudCookoo Land (being the only stage you can 100% in one go and fittingly, the final normal stage in the game) so they had the right idea from a progress perspective, but this game could've benefitted a lot more from the "note score" concept of having 100 of them scattered all over the level, rather than doing the note nests purely for currency for new moves. THey give a lot of reason to explore, but finding all the notes to help lead to secrets and such may have gone a longer way towards justifying the larger level design. Akin to DK64 and it's 500 regular bananas helping justify the larger stages in that game. But at least they do give you a lot to look forward to.

      @GamewithAndy  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is a great take (especially on people who took AVGN seriously, I point I often return to on this kind of subject). I do have to say though, that Super Mario Sunshine did deserve a lot of the negativity. It's not a bad game, but it's so creatively restrained compared to... basically every other Mario game (oh boy, another red coin mission. That's the fifth one on this level alone). That game had a rushed production, and it shows. Again, not bad, but you can tell a lot of the retroactive love we're now seeing for Sunshine is simply due to the people who were little kids at the time having grown up and now have nostalgia for it. But as someone who loved it in the day, I don't think Sunshine holds up, objectively speaking. It's better than the NSMB games and maybe 3D Land, but that's about it.
      Sorry for being sidetracked.

    Tooie has always been my go-to game in the series. I really had fun with this game as a kid. The music is as always excellent, I'm glad Banjo and Kazooie have way more moves (including the essential Grip-Grab and Egg Aim) that makes the experience a lot more fun to play, and I loved exploring most of the worlds the Isle of Hags has to offer. Canary Mary I could understand, but I never really got the retrospective hate over the game. I could personally take the mechanics in this game over the first and I think the game, as you said, is pretty much on-par with the first. I guess if you're more into Mario 64, you would enjoy Kazooie more, while if you were an Ocarina of Time fan, you would enjoy Tooie more. Banjo-Tooie would be my all time favorite game if not for the fatal flaws it has. Banjo-Kazooie is my favorite game of all time instead. I really hoped -Tooie will be better, especially because I love backtracking, I love big worlds. But they overdid it, they did it wrong. It's like having a castle and building new rooms in that castle by attaching the new parts to the building. It ended up being too chaotic. They tried something very ambitious and failed at the improvements of the first game. But I totally understand that design choice. The choice wasn't bad per se. If they polished it better, it would actually be an amazing game. It still is amazing game, but unfortunately had the big flaws.

      @@GamewithAndy Banjo was never met to continue. The original intention for Rare is to create an adventure game called Project Dream on the SNES, but it was moved to the N 64, it wasn't working for some reason. Mostly like because realistic games can be difficult to work on N 64, such as Golden Eye. So Project Dream became Banjo Kazooie.
      However now that the N 64 era has ended, Rare no longer needs the Banjo and Kazooie. Why, DK 64. People did not like the backtracking of that game, and while Banjo Tooie's backtracking isn't as bad. Rare might be worried that another Banjo game would suffer the same problems as DK 64 if not worse. It's sad but it's true, some of the greatest games exists because of hardware limitations.

I think their project Dream philosophy of figuring out a way to add "DLC" to N64 games WAY ahead of it's time showed how many layers they planned for the games to have, and even though they couldn't physically pull it off, they still managed to put in a ton of fun secrets including the codes to find all the big eggs and ice key (even though they do nothing in the first game) and allowing you to do as many of the secret codes you wanted without deleting your game in Tooie, as well as having several codes Cheato doesn't tell you about but you learn about by typing "Cheato" and some phrase. I hate that when someone has any constructive criticism about anything, people call it a hate, because of how fanatical and delusional they are. NOBODY. I repeat. NOBODY hate Banjo-Tooie. But it's the absolute fact that the game overdid a lot of things. And I don't care if it's your favorite game or if you blindly think it has no issues. IT DOES HAVE PLENTY OF ISSUES, that's simply a fact. Game should have a clear objective that you are about to figure out and solve yourself. Either by having enough knowledge or deducing the solution. Banjo-Tooie fails at this principle. It is convoluted and chaotic to the point that you have to *guess* what to do. I love puzzles in games. I love backtracking. I love when world is more alive. And sure, Banjo-Tooie fits this. But it fails to guide a player at what they are even supposed to do. You are left alone in in vast world that you have to backtrack in, but there are no pointers, signposts to tell you how. I 100% every metroidvania with ease. And it's not about having a minimap or navigation. It's about giving player a clear hints at how to get back to the point they want to be in. Or how to potentially achieve a goal. Tooie FAILS to do so. It's amazing game and does a great job at many things. But major flaw of it is not telling player how to play the game. And again, it's not about solving the puzzle. It's about giving player tools so they can solve the puzzle themselves. Tooie doesn't do that. I play games without guides. Hollow Knight or Genshin Impact. I 100% everything myself. Dark Souls. Darksiders. Any game I play I finish with maximum score myself. Tooie was painful to even just play through it, let alone get 100%. I 100% Banjo-Tooie with ease, found every secret myself. I figured it out, because game gave me hints. A hole with toll? Oh yes, it's obvious to use eggs here. Because game taught you to use eggs in places that can "eat them up". The Cheato pages? You know that Banjo is too big to enter the small passages. And so on. Hollow Knight too. I only failed to find one boss myself, but that's exactly for the same reason why Banjo-Tooie is flawed. There was no hint whatsoever that I can do what I was supposed to do and enter secret area. I am talking about White Defender if anyone is curious. Anything else? Walk in the park. I even did a all items run in Dark Souls once. No need for that, really, I just wanted to. And Dark Souls doesn't have any kind of map either. So you either find the secrets yourself or not. When I see an item in a game that is unobtainable I either mark the place in my memory to go back it later with a new ability or examine the surrounding and find a way to it. Tooie never gave me any tools so player could find a solution. It had amazing idea. A world interconnected like that? I always wanted game to be like this and always praise games that does that. "WAIT, I WENT BACK TO THIS PLACE!?". That's why I love Hollow Knight, because the game has a big interconnected map. But Hollow Knight gave me hints of how to get there. All I needed was either observation or memory. Or just using brain to find a solution knowing my arsenal. Banjo-Tooie is great game and everyone says so. But it does have a fatal flaw. That's the only reason why it's worse than Kazooie. If Banjo-Tooie weren't bigger than it can handle, it would be far better than Banjo-Kazooie. If you like Tooie more, I don't mind. Your opinion. It's a great game after all. But don't deny the fact that the game is fatally flawed. And I'm not saying it to author of the video or anyone in particular. I'm just saying it in general. Tooie had potential to me the best game of all time. But it screwed up the first principle. Player should know how to solve the puzzles, find the solution and so on, by giving them enough hints so they can figure it out.

      @@GamewithAndy Yes, you are right. But there is a small little tiny difference between minor or even major flaws and the fatal flaw that Tooie has. Every game has flaws. But Tooie, despite being so great, has a big fatal flaw that I mentioned. It's breaking the first principle of making the game. Player is supposed to understand the gameplay. The quest. The whatever they are supposed to do. If they can't find the solution by playing the game, it's same as fake difficulty. If player has to guess the solution, instead of deducing it, it's a fatal flaw. And that's what happens in Tooie. It doesn't require perception, it doesn't require skill, it doesn't require human level memory. Tooie often expect player to know something beyond what the game is telling or having a robot level memory to remember every single room and how to find it back. There is no points of interest that will guide player, so you can know where you are. You just have to guess the solution. And it's not like the solution to a problem is necessarily in the same level. Because of how the interconnectivity works, the solution to a problem from one level may be ANWYHERE in the game. That's the problem with Tooie. Game is amazing. But has that one enormous fatal flaw. As I mentioned, it's still great game. But let's not pretend that it doesn't have that fatal flaw. It's not just some minor thing. It's literally core of the gameplay that is the problem.

    It baffles me that people who like Banjo Kazooie even think for a moment that this game is bad. Sure it has some unconventional mechanics, some backtracking, but thats not bad in my opinion. Banjo Tooie is a shining example of how to make a proper game sequel.
