How Amazon Returns Work

  • Returns take a major toll on retailers' bottom line and on the planet, but Amazon is taking big steps to change that. Free returns are now offered on almost all Amazon orders, with a new option to bring unboxed items in-person to any Kohl's store. The majority of returned Amazon items are resold to other consumers or liquidators, returned to suppliers, or donated through a new program Amazon hopes will cut down on waste.

There's an amazon store in my town. Whenever I need to make a return I literally just walk in and put my package in a drop box. In and out in 15 seconds, barely enough time to say have a nice day to the person working there.

When working in retail, one really begins to understand just how disgusting, rude and trashy people truly are. When I worked at Gucci, people would buy a shirt on Friday, wear it for the weekend and return it on Monday smelling of cigarettes, alcohol and sweat. One lady wanted to return a headband she purchased 15 years ago, so we had to get out the archives because it was no longer in the system. The worst is a woman who defecated all over a fitting room after we refused to return a shirt. I don’t work in retail now, but when I did, I really began to wonder how the hell we’ve made it this far as a species. There’s just so many idiots out there.

As a heavy Amazon user, I avoided purchasing clothes just out of concern of returns being too much effort. Now that they have the Kohls return option I notice that I don’t hesitate to purchase clothing since they have removed that perception of difficulty returning small items. I also like that Kohls offers a coupon with all returns and I find myself picking up additional items while there. Before Amazon partnered with Kohls, I had not been to a Kohls since the late 90s. It truly is a win win for both Amazon and Kohls.

Depends on how you look at it. You got dressed, got in a car and drove dealing with traffic/stoplights etc, walked around a store finding what you want, spent time in dressing rooms, the list goes on. I use Amazon wardrobe. I get to try it on before I buy it and what I don't like goes back in the bag with a provided return sticker and gets tossed in a mail box. It's way less of a hassle than going to the store and trying stuff on. Plus I get to use the availability of the internet with vast options opposed to a single stores stock and I get to do it naked. Capitalism for the win.

My best two Amazon issues I’ve dealt with was,
Once I bought my $250 gaming desk, once I opened the box I was in shock that the back lady corner was damaged like it was dropped on that corner during shipping, so I called and complained to Amazon,
Well they didn’t wanna bother having me return the entire desk so they just refunded me my total $250 and I got to keep the desk anyway, then I used the $250 refund to buy my ultrawide gaming monitor so essentially got the desk and the monitor for that $250
Then more recently, we moved into our trailer house back in May, then we bought a crib guard on Amazon for our now 1yr old daughter and they delivered it to the wrong trailer house in our park,
We had to walk around the park trying to find the house that matched the picture of the house Amazon actually delivered it to, we found the house but the package was gone and no one answered the door, so we went home and called and complained to Amazon, we ended up getting over $200 gifted to us to cover the loss from not getting the item we bought plus extra for having such a difficult experience, then like two days later the neighbor who got our package came walking around the block and found us and we finally got the item after we had already got the free $200 from Amazon lol

I am a very long term Amazon customer. Overall I am very happy with the service and I think the company is superb. My one gripe are the reviews. I always write a review, especially if the product is good. But on the rare occasion that I buy a product through Amazon and it is poor or the seller customer after sales service is bad - then I write a one star review. Time and again I am told my review is not acceptable and cannot be published. I never use bad language or unacceptable commets. But the bad reviews stay hidden.
I wonder how many other Amazon customers have found this "selective" review policy. Not a good reputation for Amazon to have after all their years of hard work creating the best on-line company in history.

And the Amazon return desk at my local Kohl's just happens to be next to the graphic tee's section so i have literally grabbed a couple shirts that i liked and turned around and used that coupon to buy them. 2 possibilities for returns "Wall of Shame". 1) Resell and ship it direct from the local "store" or warehouse. People buying on Amazon don't know or care where it came from. If the return was catalogued correctly eg. "Women's blue blouse size 7" and someone orders a 7 blue blouse, repackage and ship it from the return location. Or 2) set up a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly sale at the warehouse where customers can browse and buy the returned items at a discounted price. Everyone loves a deal. It's not really rocket science. When companies become so large, they tend to forget the HUGE problems are really just a whole bunch of small problems that appear to be much larger than they really are. Simple solutions work for all sizes of problems.

They just push the Costs and Losses to the sellers for any mistake and still keeps their cuts. They don't have to pay much.
Returnless Refund/replacement is the best option for you when they're gonna throw away that product. They've shown incorrect statistics about Damaging products have highest return rates, actually items not delivered on time have the highest return rates.

Returning Amazon purchases at UPS store has been the easiest return process I've ever done. In and out in literally less than a minute.

I know people at small 3D printing companies who have had to deal with people scamming the returns system from returning machines after it goes on sale > not sending the right machine back in the first place. No returns system is perfect but there is some work that has to be done to make it better for everyone all around. That said, an easy return policy is very helpful when purchasing items, especially if you are not sure about something.

Why can't they resell returned items? I always thought that when I returned an item they simply put it back on the shelf...

I buy stuff off Amazon so often they would probably do a wellness check on me if I went a week without buying something. The few times I have had to return something it is usually easy to do. There have been a couple of times that the cost of returning something made it impractical to do so. I am more careful now and I buy stuff in stores that have a higher chance of needing to be returned.

Returning items that Amazon has sent erroneously has been down right horrible in my experience. It’s nice to see the positive spin that this video puts on the measures online retailers are taking to address this growing issue, but it may be time to regulate the industry.

It takes Fed-Ex 5 days to get a package from Texas to me in San Diego. I sometimes get an item from China in 7. Fed-Ex is a joke.🔺

I buy online because I don't want to leave my home to go shopping. Same should apply for returns, the last thing I want is to commute to any store to return an item I'm not happy with.

I like my job as a clothing and shoes return processor at the Amazon Warehouse. Some of the things we see are interesting for sure! Most things come back in great sellable shape. We repack the items, must do 25 an hour! It's not horrible. I'll be grabbing extra shifts during the upcoming holidays

Yeah, I returned a bad fitting item at Kohls and got a Kohl's 25% off anything coupon (only good for 7 days), so as it's designed, I spent a portion of my effective return in the store.
I call that a three way win with how busy my schedule.

The worst is having to deal with doing online returns as a commissioned sales associate at a store. Losing a sale on the floor because said customer “doesn’t have the order number”, “just has the card they ordered it with”, or neither takes up a salesperson’s time. They give you a free return label for a reason. It’s really not that difficult.
    It’s pathetic.
On that note, certain people shouldn’t really need to wonder why they can’t get any help in a store. It’s because every single salesperson knows what a waste of time they are.

I often order items labeled as used-good or used-very good from Amazon Warehouse Deals and the item arrives clearly not used, perhaps with just a less than perfect original manufacturer’s factory packaging.
It’s a great way to find a good deal.

Many products don't actually get returned, Amazon will tell you to keep it and you get a refund anyway. Its the sellers who lose on returns.

Why does Amazon not include an Invoice or Packing slip with their deliveries? The only time you get an Invoice is when your make a purchase from a Marketplace vendor.

Amazon is a powerful enough force, that they could require manufacturers who want to sell their products on Amazon, handle any of their returned products. This just may result in less "junk" being sold in the first place!
