    I'd just like to point out that Chad Kroeger is probably more of a baritone, so his voice is naturally a bit burlier than mine. He also harnesses his Canadian powers to get that extra burly-ness.

      Andrew Southworth from what I’ve seen on your vids, your voice is best suited for:
      - Chester Bennington (Linkin Park)
      - Jeff Gutt (Dry Cell, Stone Temple Pilots)
      - Wayne Static (Static X)

      @AndrewSouthworth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I get the Linkin Park comments all the time haha. Realized this one a lot when I did the full band Faint cover on one of my other channels. I've never actually listened to Static X, although checking them out now some of the songs sound familiar, and I totally get what you mean haha. If I was born 10 years earlier I could have probably jumped on the Nu-Metal scene 0_0 (although on that note i'm working on some songs with a band from across the country where i'm doing this kind of vocal style, but a little less metal-ey).

      Andrew Southworth yeah, the linkin Park was obvious. You could be the “Andrew and Mike” show with Shinoda lol.
      You do a good Dry Cell though too. I personally love dry cell (it brought me to your channel) but they’re not well known lol.
      Static X I can definitely see. If you can Listen to “The Only” (From Need for Speed Underground 1) I feel like that song most closely matches your voice haha

    Your raspy voice honestly reminds me of the singer from Sum41 more than anyone else, though you sound much more in control of your voice.

    you need a low pitch rasp not high pitch for that song but his songs are high and low pitched rasp

    why can chad use his raps a whole 2 hrs show and dont lose his voice? whats the key? pls

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Its mainly just years of practice and refining your technique. Its also important to stay well hydrated (~1 gallon of water per day or more), and not do things that are bad for your voice like smoking.

    • @neilfraser3091
      @neilfraser3091 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      chad Kroeger did bad things to his vocal cords for years and he never lost his voice as he used to it I guess ,as well as a hoarse voice which shows in too bad live in Seattle its more like he had a sore throat but doing His technique causes nodules or benign non cancerous growths such as cyst which he he had for years maybe over the years he lost his voice before he came famous and got used to it and now he never gets it but yes stay hydrated, if you want to sound exactly like him you are going to have to destroy your vocal cords to peaces and to get that rasp he adds breath with slamming his vocal chords slightly with your normal voice

  • @mpekim
    @mpekim 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    1. I’ve tried this technique before. Unfortunately I believe that I wasn’t doing it right and I may have hurt my vocal chords. Tbh until I really get singing down I kind have just shyed away from rasp and fry.
    2. Nickelback is okay. Really don’t understand the meme-level of hate they get. Their biggest criticism is that they haven’t really done much original since their first few albums (it actually gets so bad that “Someday” sounds like a remix of “How Your Remind Me”). However, by this logic, Rise Against is essentially “Nickelback for Whiny Liberals”, AC/DC is “Nickelback for Older People (The OG Nickelback), and Assembly-Line POP Music is Nickelback en masse.
    3. Chad Kroger is similar (though not equal) to Axl Rose. Both of them were great singers but douchebags off stage.
    Good video bruh. XD

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah its definitely best to learn to sing first. Without having full control over your voice its hard to know exactly what you should and should not be activating to do the rasp; for example, you wouldn't know how to imagine a more head resonance sound or keep your diaphragm tight, or what using your vocal cords feels like so that you don't try to use the vocal cords themselves to make the rasp.
      Yeah Nickelback really gets shit on for just doing what every other huge artist does nowadays. They found their sound that sells and rolled with it, just like the Foo Fighters, Rise Against, Justin Bieber, and Metallica. Its pretty rare to find any bands after 5+ albums that are still being original, even most of my favorite bands. A lot of it comes down to how you define originality. I think Tool and Tesseract are pretty original (and are two of my favorites), but someone else might just hear a never ending sea of chugging guitars/bass with polyrhythmic grooves and vocals that are all over the place.

    • @mpekim
      @mpekim 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andrew Southworth I fucking love Tool dude. 46 and 2’s intro is practically an auditory drug. Sober is also a huge inspiration for “Becoming I” by Unloco (a song from a smaller band I like).
      Thanks for the advice btw. :)

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I saw them live this year for the first time and it was AMAZING. There really isn't another band like them live - the visuals really take it to the next level, and they're essentially flawless live.

      I always keep hearing how Chad Kroeger is a 'douchebag' but I see no evidence whatsoever. I really don't understand it. He's a douchebag for sticking up for his band?

  • @neilfraser3091
    @neilfraser3091 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    you need to damage your vocal chords to do this as chad Krieger damaged his and also you might need a low voice

    • @pakoti96
      @pakoti96 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @anonnieman
      @anonnieman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not really. He just has very good technique. I have never heard someone actually achieve his sound with good technique (a.k.a without losing their voice within a minute). Kroeger can do it for a very long time without damaging his voice even the littlest bit. I think you have got your info from one of those nickelback haters.
      Also he does not have a very deep voice. He is just a baritone like most males and not even a low baritone at that. The thing which makes him sound the way he does is that he is a baritone who sings within the tenor range. Many metal singers do this and that is why e.g. Corey Taylor sound so warm while singing fairly high.
      The bloke in the video is a natural tenor, as is Chester Bennington. They don't have the same warmth in the same octaves but have a lot more flexibility within the same range.

    Bro, I've been trying a lot and I have not been able to find the right technique to add rasp... but I think I finally got it, the thing is that I was doing the "buzzer sound" wrong. I recently understood that maybe feels more like singing like Louis Armstrong, right? I would like to send you and audio to know if now I'm doing it right... but TH-cam doesn't allow to put links in the comments, can I send it to an e-mail? or what can I do?

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah if you can make a Louis Armstrong sound comfortably thats the right feeling. You'll just have to transform it to the sound you want. Check the description of this video, it has my email contact - andrew@generastudios.com
