Cannot believe Luke Kelly is being viewed outside of Ireland. He's one of the greatest singing talents of all time. Thank you for spreading his brilliance. I believe the child here has "downs" in the 1960s / 1970s and the guilt parents felt. Thank God its changed nie

Beautiful song written by Phil Coulter who had a child with down syndrome who died aged 4 and wrote this during his grief. Luke Kelly is an astounding vocalist and this version with just a few guys hanging out in a pub is gorgeously sad.

Our beautiful Sinéad O'Connor also did a rendition of this song, so tragic considering how her precious son died in recent years RIP😢
Phil Coulter also wrote, the iconic The Town I Loved So Well, about the troubles/war in Ireland, how the Brits tried to destroy our beautiful Derry City. Poor Phil, also lost his brother & sister in separate drownings. He's an amazing man.

Long time sub here and an irishman. Wonderful to see you're reaction to one of our most beloved singers. Luke Kelly's voice is one of a kind. My all time favourite aomg by Him and his band the Dubliners, is called "The aul triangle". Its sung in an accapella style. And I do find myself becoming a stereotypical irish man when iv had a few pints and I start to sing it outloud

I am from Ireland. My brother had Downs Syndrome. I loved him dearly. He was put away in a Christian Brothers home for people like him. When he was home on "short" holidays, the door bell might ring and I would have to hide him in the bedroom. For the life of me as a young child I couldn't make out why. In those days it was a "Shame" on the family to have a child like this. When my parents passed I could finally go visit and take him out and show him off. Nobody stared at him. Times were changing and I think they are still changing for the better. I see people out with kids with all types of disabilities and I usually make a point of saying hello to them. I see mothers and fathers proudly show them off and looking after some of them is quite a job, so it must be great for them to take their kids/adults out for a break and have a coffee and have friends join them. They guy that wrote this song had a child with a disability - I'm not sure what. A beautiful man and gifted singer songwriter and performer.

Such a beautiful classic Irish ballad being sang by one of Ireland’s greatest artists.
I love seeing the reaction on your face when you tapped into the song’s message. Your face kinda lit up after the first verse. You said you live with a condition that makes communicating with other people a struggle. Talking into a camera in an empty room is easy but posting it online so the whole world can see you is one of the bravest things anyone can do. You sir are stronger and braver than most people. You have thousands of followers on TH-cam and you express yourself in an open and honest way.

Very moving song that Luke begged from Phil Coulter. Luke was so moved by this song that he insisted Phil would allow him to sing it. Back in the day children with special needs were called simple. This song brings many people to tears. Phil also lost his sister who tried to help one of her patients who suffered depression and left her daughters 12 th birthday to help him. He took her to her death with him when he took his life in the River Swilly, Sinead O Connor sang a song called “Shores of the Swilly” about this incident written by Phil another moving piece and worth a listen. He also lost his brother who drowned in the same place. Luke was a beautiful singer and also sang another one of Phil songs The Town I Loved so Well, which is a masterpiece.

    • @robertmcalpine488
      @robertmcalpine488 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You are wrong about that. Originally Phil Coulter didn't intend for anybody to record the song, and Luke had to ask several times before Coulter would give in and let it happen. If you don't believe me search on TH-cam "Luke Kelly talking about Scorn Not His Simplicity" and it will take you to an old black and white interview with Luke explaining how he heard the song for the first time and how he had to really persuade Phil to let him record it.

Thank you for bringing back a memory albeit a painful one.
I knew this song when I was a child - we used to have cassette tapes of the Dubliners of which Luke Kelly was a member and he used to sing that song.
When I was older I had forgotten about the song but I did have a disabled child.
Driving through east Cork one day with my wife and family it came on the radio and I turned it up - well we both were crying at the end - I didn't play it since and skipped through the song itself when you played it here.
My son passed away at 15 - I didn't know that Phil Coulter had a Trisomy 21 child and that he wrote this song when his child died - thanks.
“The great Gaels of Ireland are the men that God made mad,
For all their wars are merry, and all their songs are sad.”

Luke Kelly was a phenomenal artist, he sang from the heart. He loved this song so much that apparently, he refused to sing it at big or rowdy venues & would only sing it at small gatherings where the audience would listen to the words & give it the respect it deserved. Thank you for sharing it.

I am an Aspie and yet I lived in a town where there was a "mental institution" when I was growing up.
I saw very severe cases as my church would go hold services every month.
I am also much more of a social recluse though I did manage to run a business for decades, for a couple.
I was never academically inclined but was great with words (as you are) until I had a minor surgery and the drugs they used to put me to sleep wiped out the bulk of my words.
16 years later and I am still fighting to recover them.
I love my Scottish/Irish heritage and love hearing the singing of my people.

This song was written by Phil Coulter about his son with downes syndrome who died very young. But I like you can feel it’s relevance with me and my own son. Luke conveys it so well. Especially if you study all their history, Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Barney McKenna and John Sheahan* (the only living original "Dubliners")

Please review “The town that I loved so well”. by Phil Coulter -same writer that wrote “scorn not his simplicity.” Another gem if you know the history of the troubles in Ireland and beautiful even if you don’t.

Phil Coulter who wrote this song is a good family friend. This is my dads favourite song and he remembers knowing Phils son. Amazing song and amazing writing from Phil as per usual. And of course amazing performance from the legendary Luke Kelly.

You should also try Raglan Road. It was written by an Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh and he personally gave it to Luke Kelly to sing. It's a lyrically stunning love song.

This song brings me to tears, all that potential gone with the child who should have had the chance to live a life like the rest of us. All the WHAT IFs his parents wondered about, she blaming herself ,for having done something during the pregnancy to cause his Down Syndrome. So hard to lose a child, and this song is their Heart Break for everyone to hear.😢

Thank you for airing this, it’s a song I played many times in my youth as I have a brother with Downs Syndrome and always felt a connection with the song. I think it was recorded in the Embankment pub up the Dublin mountains, with the Dubliners(band) having a few pints and being interviewed about their music and lives at the time. Luke Kelly sadly left us some years ago at a young(ish) age, but he is revered here in Ireland and rightly so.
Phil Coulter is a phenomenal song writer, I believe he wrote ‘My Boy’ recorded and sung by none other than the King himself Elvis, which he held close to his heart, one of his better later recordings. Lovely to see this rendition of the song be acknowledged by your good self, thank you again.
