Beatles records were done before recordings had a click track to record in time . Ringo didn't need click tracks and loops to play to. His timing was impeccable on these recordings. Unless a track called for apeeding up or slowing down Ringo was right there on the money. A human metronome. A metronome with soul.

Ringo's "less is more" approach is basically why he was the perfect human drum machine for this band and I believe a major contributing factor to their unprecedented success. Plus he is Ringo. It is not possible to imagine The Beatles without him. His personality, his presence, his beats, his songs... to me a very integral part of the overall "magic".
There's a belief by some in the comments that Paul came up with the drum pattern because of what John said in a 1980 interview but George disputes this. According to Wikipedia he said it was Ringo's idea based on George's riff which in turn was based on the way John strummed the chord when introducing the song to the others. I think John didn't want to admit Paul wrote at least a third of the song so that's why he said his only contribution was the way Ringo played the drums.
Absolutely true. Ringo spent decades being an under-rated drummer. but more recently he started getting much-deserved recognition and appreciation. I have seen many interviews and clips by other drummers who all say that Ringo is simply THE MAN when it comes to drumming, in a million different ways. His playing definitely contributed to Beatles magic. No Ringo, no Beatles. Of course the same is true of all four of them.
AMAZING song! It's almost impossible to describe how good/important the Beatles were/are. SO GLAD I got to be alive during this musical period. I was fortunate to hear every one of these songs the day they came out....what a thrill that was....waiting for the 'next' song/release to see what that would be like. Wow. What a musical explosion.

So many things happening in this song on all different levels: the "falling-down-the-stairs" drum pattern, the 12-string arpeggio, the lead guitar pedal point on A, and of course Lennon's incredible vocal. Thanks to you we can really hear all of it ! I do wish they would have ended it like this rather than the fade-out.
I'm willing to speculate (57 yrs later) that the off-beat drum part demands itself, and Paul said "I like it, do that!'. Paul is indeed a great multi-instrumental talent, writer, and singer. Let's not go overboard with the praise as a drummer. He learnt a LOT from Ringo, believe it.

I had not noticed for years. I wonder if 1. This was a mistake. 2. This was intentional. 3. They chose a take where it was not noticed. 4. It was noticed however fit perfectly anyway and as it was a great take they kept it. In any case it makes it that little bit tricky and I love Ringo’s drumming on everything. There is a magic to the Beatles and what each member contributed. They are a puzzle of four pieces that could not be replaced.

“Ticket To Ride” is definitely in my Top Ten Beatles’ songs list. It’s the one Lennon-penned song that I equate to McCartney’s “Penny Lane” in that it’s a pop tune that I could listen to a thousand times in a week. And by the end of that week, if I only had two choices given to me to either listen to it a thousand more times the following week, or to be given a pill that I was told would “un-alive” myself in the most painless and peaceful way possible, I’d choose to listen to the song a thousand times more by the end of the following week.

As always, Ringo's drumming makes the song swing and rock. He changes the basic skip beat to a straight 4/4 in the bridges and slightly alters it in the second half of the song, which I never noticed before. What a genius! Paul's bass sounds under-recorded, which surprises me. They got much better bass sounds on other recording on this album. It really sounds muffled, unless his is not the actual track but a leaked track, which is what it sounds like. The guitars are played a little simpler than I thought, particularly the dual strummed Gmaj7 chord in the chorus that we could never figure out back in the day. Such is the illusion of these recordings. Nothing compares to Lennon's vocals, and along with Phil Everly, David Crosby and Graham Nash, McCartney is one of the best top voice harmony rock singers of all time.
On this album the volume was turned up on the drums, which I like compared to previous albums that left the drums very low in the mix. In addition, this song already shows what would come later in their music and in pop and rock music. There seems to be some discussion lately on what exactly John was playing during the verses, was it just a plain A major chord (as seen during TV appearances), or alternating between the A major and D major chords, or playing A major with Asus2 chord? I've had a good listen to the audio of this video. By looping the audio for one measure of the A chord on the program Transcribe, between time points 9:50.00 to 9:51.84, and applying EQ, boosting the 700-800 Hz frequencies to +7 to 8dB, cutting the frequencies below 640k and cutting the frequencies above 1250Hz as much as possible, you can get a relatively good isolation of the rhythm guitar part by John without the 12 string part getting in the way. You can slow down the audio as well. By way of repeated listening of the loop, I swear I get the strong impression that either John was playing the A major chord alternating to the Asus2 chord on the 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings or he could have been barring the A major chord on the second fret and alternating to the B minor chord on the 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings.
On same page with you more or less. I've never in depth deconstructed nor the ability to isolate tho one day I should, but I've just gone superficially by my ear and video. I've never thought John does this A -> Bm thing. I've recorded it pumping through A -> D, and even that sounds excessive. Maybe they're right but my (now 64ish y/o) ear doesn't hear it. Through my lifetime of playing Beatles I've always stressed that they do hidden things (chords/inversions/fretboard positions) that make their special tone but here I just don't hear John's supposed hidden guitar part. I think he just blends. OTOH, I've also read that George overdubbed the droning A string. If so, where is John then? On "she;s got a ticket to ride...." the riff stops and and I can hear both the 12 string softly and 6 string strongly.

You can hear Paul very faintly fiddling around on his guitar if you listen close enough. In the verse “the girls that driving me mad is going away” and right after that. It’s easier to here in the full track

Volume pedal on the "drone" Strat track George plays. He could also being using the Strat volume control on that part, but he used the volume pedal on the HELP album a lot ("I Need You" ) and "Ticket to Ride" b Side "Yes it Is," as well as "Wait," which was recorded for "Help" but left off....

There seems to be some discussion lately on what exactly John was playing during the verses, was it just a plain A major chord (as seen during TV appearances), or alternating between the A major and D major chords, or playing A major with Asus2 chord? I've had a good listen to the audio of this video. By looping the audio for one measure of the A chord on the program Transcribe, between time points 9:50.00 to 9:51.84, and applying EQ, boosting the 700-800 Hz frequencies to +7 to 8dB, cutting the frequencies below 640k and cutting the frequencies above 1250Hz as much as possible, you can get a relatively good isolation of the rhythm guitar part by John without the 12 string part getting in the way. You can slow down the audio as well. By way of repeated listening of the loop, I swear I get the strong impression that either John was playing the A major chord alternating to the Asus2 chord on the 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings or he could have been barring the A major chord on the second fret and alternating to the B minor chord on the 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings.

On same page with you more or less. I've never in depth deconstructed nor the ability to isolate tho one day I should, but I've just gone superficially by my ear and video. I've never thought John does this A -> Bm thing. I've recorded it pumping through A -> D, and even that sounds excessive. Maybe they're right but my (now 64ish y/o) ear doesn't hear it. Through my lifetime of playing Beatles I've always stressed that they do hidden things (chords/inversions/fretboard positions) that make their special tone but here I just don't hear John's supposed hidden guitar part. I think he just blends. OTOH, I've also read that George overdubbed the droning A string. If so, where is John then? On "she;s got a ticket to ride...." the riff stops and and I can hear both the 12 string softly and 6 string strongly.

There’s a tone pedal guitar that appears every time John sings r-i-ide that’s not in the isolated guitar section. Is it possible there are FOUR guitars on this track??
Volume pedal on the "drone" Strat track George plays. He could also being using the Strat volume control on that part, but he used the volume pedal on the HELP album a lot ("I Need You" ) and "Ticket to Ride" b Side "Yes it Is," as well as "Wait," which was recorded for "Help" but left off....
Always wondered why Ringo switched away from the syncopated pattern after the bridge. Didn't realize he does it in the second chorus, too.

You know on the BBC version of this when they're singing the "I don't know why she's riding so high" part Ringo keeps with that drum pattern he doesn't switch to the high hat and it sounds so damn funky!!!

George never owned a 335 during the Beatles years. He had 345 which he seemed to have ditched very quickly as it’s only seen a couple of times and it was definitely not used in this recording.
Wow that's a lot of rhythm guitars LOL.... there is only John' Strat, a Strat overdub by George, and George's 12 string. Paul overdubs the fills on the Casino. No Rickenbackers on the track.
With the Beatles, nothing was "boring". You listen to every detail, even the 40 second note at the end of A Day in the Life. If any other band originally did this song, it would have been boring.
