Cool video. Just rebuilt my NP271F -- if gets unhappy, I'll do the main shaft upgrade on the next rebuild -- which probably won't happen for a long long time.
@Backwoods0182 cool. Building a tandem axle truck and using a case as kind of a power divider on the front axle. It would have to run in reverse. Have a np 205 and haven't decided which to use. My 273 is electric shift and lighter weight.
So I have a 273 in my truck. I want to switch to a 271. I found someone with a 271 from a 6.0 which means it has a 34 spline output and main shaft. I have to swap my shafts from my 273 to his 271.. will this work from your knowledge??
Could you do a step by step on dismantling a 271F transfer case. We have one and cannot see any snap rings holding the tail section yet it won't budge wacking it with a rubber mallet or prying on the reinforced ears. Please show how you go about taking them apart if possible.
I have a 2000 NP273F . Is the main shaft in there drilled with the holes ? Can i use that main shaft to swap in to a 271F i picked up and just buy the updated range fork and hub ? Also … hows your synchro’d build worked out for you .. any probs ??
Great video and explanation. One question - did you only switch the input shaft so you could use the planetary set with lower miles? As long as the old planetary is in good shape, is it interchangeable with the newer main shaft?
Hey DIY. I changed the main shaft out for a newer style that has drilled holes for lubrication. 99-2000 had no drilling for lube and would wear the tabs on the shift fork prematurely. It’s been a while but I believe the planetary is the same.
@@Backwoods0182 Thanks! I am swapping the NV273 in my 99 to an NV271 (I want manual shift). The NV271 I picked up has 400k miles on it, so I found your video when looking for rebuild info. Now I plan to do this main shaft upgrade as well. Thanks for making more work for me :)
Thanks for getting a 271 video on TH-cam

great video, truly appreciated !!!
What does the pump actually do?
Provides pressurized oil to all your rotating parts.
Can I convert a np273 to manual shift or do I need to crack it open to remove something else ??
This is the video to do just that. You will need a 271 case half. And all the associated parts included in this video.
So does it matter which direction the transfer case runs for the pump to work. Does it still pump in reverse?
Yes it will pump in reverse.

Yes they are interchangeable. Use the fork selector from the 271. Also check the fork tang bushings for wear.
It's the seal for the input shaft the same even if it's different splines.
Yes it is the same seal used.
@@Backwoods0182 it's the same for Dodge?
I cannot confirm for the Dodge. I would assume it is the same however.
Can I take the input shaft from my zf6 mounted np273f and put it into my 4r100 np271f so I can have a manual shift?
No you cannot. The input shaft for the manual ZF6 has a different spline count.

Hey Hoserfish. Sorry for the late reply. Were you able to get the tail section off?
@@Backwoods0182 yeah pried the main case apart and then got it that way.

You’ll have to disassemble to se if the main shaft is drilled. All the parts will swap over if you buy the range fork and hub
Thanks for sharing. Great fyi.
can i drill holes in my np271 f to get better liubrication?
If you are referring to the main shaft I would say no. Better off to buy the updated shaft

Part number on updated range fork ? Thank you

Is this an NP271 or an NP241?
Ken MacMillan NP271F. Out of Superduty
@@Backwoods0182 The first time I watched this TH-cam played a different video. I don't know how it happened, maybe a bandwidth issue or something.
