All started from some jackass making up a story about daycares practicing satanic cult worship and using the children in there practices and even indoctronating them... all made up but presented as nonfiction when published. It started the satanic scare in the US and led to many established crazies. Such as the people putting things into your candy at halloween so check your candy (despite it not ever being a thing) and of course the famous D&D is devil worship. Which led to mass banning and bookburnings. Good times.

At risk of ruining a joke, iirc it did have similar origins but I believe the original goal was to make a smaller scale fantasy war game, something you can see in the OD&D rules, but became more about roleplaying with Advanced D&D, although this is more speculation on my part based on a few tidbits and looking at OD&D rules

In 30 years of running and playing in a wide variety of TTRPG I have never once had a group that gave themselves a name, or even breached the idea in the first place. That feels like such a modern trend born from Critical Role. Not a bad trend, mind you, just not something the older crowds really every did.
I've been running games since '95. My groups didn't start coming up with party names until I started running multiple campaigns. Naming the groups just tends to come up naturally when you need to differentiate them.
I think it has to do with permanence of the group. Back in "The Day", we knew that we were always one bad decision away from at the very least a dead character, or for really dumb decisions a TPK. You wouldn't want to be some silly fools that named your group "The four Amigos" only to have to trade out amigo's every couple of sessions. because one of them can't help themself from saying "I sprint down this hallway screeming 'nothing can kill me'"
2nd edition character sheets literally had a line for the name of the adventuring party. It was popular back then because the novels gave names to the various hero parties. I've been playing since 1996 - believe me, it's not a new thing. It's just been revived.
I mean dnd was made after chainmail which was the first dark ages wargame so dnd´s invention was kinda an extension of wargaming but I like your version more
Ironically enough, a Warlock is the closest thing to what a Christian or J ewish relationship with God is really like. Paladins serve ideals, like an atheist or a political idealogue might, but Warlocks serve a being they know who guides them and offers them rewards for faithfulness. It's all about who or what you are serving, and that's why Warlock is also the most offensive class.
There is a really good graphic novel about gaigex and the roots of DND. Basically child of wargaming. And wargaming starts cause hg wells and his buds wanted rules to the bed they played with his son's toys. It's a fun background graphic novel

Everyone that I play with says the same thing that when they where young it was drilled into them it was devil warship . I can't wait till next session !
My Roman Catholic raised Father and Presbyterian raised Mother that took me to church every Sunday also taught me D&D when I was 7 or 8 back in the late 70s. They thought those that equated D&D to devil worship were silly and would debate the differences between Christian beliefs, theater, and literature with them.
My PCs have two main campaign directions to go, with lots of options for side quests available for them But no They’ve split into three groups and deciding to go off in random directions 🤦
Well for anyone mildly interested in what really happened the short form is some dudes playing miniature war game rules started working on mods for playing individual knights over a squadron or four or whatever, then thought what if trolls, wizards and dragons and stuff from the old tales was all real and part of medieval armies, and from there a guy jumped to lets take our individual warriors and run through a classic dungeon rather than around a battle field. And things mushroomed. Gygax, Arneson and their group would be the "guys".

I have an idea for a character. The character is a warlock, but thinks he's a wizard. He gets spellbooks and wizard gear from his friend whose secretly a really weird God (who mainly doesn't like being treated as a god). And that's their pact. Character keeps getting confused why his abilities work differently from other wizards.
There is 5 editions. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3.5 and that basic one that everyone jumped on the band wagon for and now likes it cause they get a much more basic version of the awesomeness that is 3.5
As veteran from the days of the great and powerful THAC0, I've played many versions of D&D (and its D20 spin-offs). I agree that 3.5 is a fine system, but it is far from perfect. In particular, 5th edition has managed to rewrite the magic system in a way that feels much more natural and does a better job of scaling the power of spells as characters advance in levels. It incorporates the best feature from the many iterations of the psionics system (power scaling) while removing the rigidity carried over from one of Gygax's favorite novels (one-to-one slot memorization). You should give it a try and see if there is anything you want to add to your house rules or home brew. Check out Pathfinder's (1st ed.) combat mechanics while you are at it: combat maneuvers are over-powered, but the rest of combat received a lot of beneficial tweaks.
There will always be stupid people who will hate what they are told to hate instead of taking the time to learn whether or not a thing should be hated. The Satanic Panic started with a corrupt preacher that started vilifying DnD to put himself in the spotlight. The nonsense went viral when the major media networks joined the bandwagon. This all happened in the 80's: when broadcast news was still trusted (a reputation earned in previous decades). Suddenly every conservative preacher in the nation was telling his flock that DnD was a tool of Satan. The entire thing was debunked when the media outlets were caught spreading a false story, but by then it was too late to change the prejudice that had been instilled in millions.
The argument these idiots use is that the characters worship fake gods... I know it's stupid. Warlocks didn't even exist back then. Also, you could just make a homebrew world with God as the only god, if you really wanted to.
The inspiration to do this came from Arneson, who adapted Chainmail into something recognizable as D&D, and then presented it to Gygax, with them working together to develop the actual rules of D&D.
It evolved more from wargames where minis represented armies or groups of soldiers. Gygax came up with the idea of making each mini representing one person with specific skills.

I have an idea for a character. The character is a warlock, but thinks he's a wizard. He gets spellbooks and wizard gear from his friend whose secretly a really weird God (who mainly doesn't like being treated as a god). And that's their pact. Character keeps getting confused why his abilities work differently from other wizards.

There is 5 editions. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3.5 and that basic one that everyone jumped on the band wagon for and now likes it cause they get a much more basic version of the awesomeness that is 3.5
As veteran from the days of the great and powerful THAC0, I've played many versions of D&D (and its D20 spin-offs). I agree that 3.5 is a fine system, but it is far from perfect. In particular, 5th edition has managed to rewrite the magic system in a way that feels much more natural and does a better job of scaling the power of spells as characters advance in levels. It incorporates the best feature from the many iterations of the psionics system (power scaling) while removing the rigidity carried over from one of Gygax's favorite novels (one-to-one slot memorization). You should give it a try and see if there is anything you want to add to your house rules or home brew. Check out Pathfinder's (1st ed.) combat mechanics while you are at it: combat maneuvers are over-powered, but the rest of combat received a lot of beneficial tweaks.
As a Christian I don’t get how DnD can be seen as “Devil worship” and the game was taught to me by my Christian father
There will always be stupid people who will hate what they are told to hate instead of taking the time to learn whether or not a thing should be hated. The Satanic Panic started with a corrupt preacher that started vilifying DnD to put himself in the spotlight. The nonsense went viral when the major media networks joined the bandwagon. This all happened in the 80's: when broadcast news was still trusted (a reputation earned in previous decades). Suddenly every conservative preacher in the nation was telling his flock that DnD was a tool of Satan. The entire thing was debunked when the media outlets were caught spreading a false story, but by then it was too late to change the prejudice that had been instilled in millions.
The argument these idiots use is that the characters worship fake gods... I know it's stupid. Warlocks didn't even exist back then. Also, you could just make a homebrew world with God as the only god, if you really wanted to.

I bet gary gygax was just like what if I take chainmail but only control one character! I shall call it dungeons and dragons.
The inspiration to do this came from Arneson, who adapted Chainmail into something recognizable as D&D, and then presented it to Gygax, with them working together to develop the actual rules of D&D.
Not just devil worship, when I was a kid I was always told that it would warp your mind and make it so you forget what’s reality and what’s role play.

It evolved more from wargames where minis represented armies or groups of soldiers. Gygax came up with the idea of making each mini representing one person with specific skills.
