I tried before this video came out to do the same paint job and made the same basecoat mistake, i actually used the new runelord brass as i thought all the new colours went together which was WAAY too dark. You are right you definitely need a light silver base. Good video looked awesome in the end

Great tutorial ! I was looking for a tutorial to have the same "Copper" color result on those spooky bois, and also I've seen that you precised their dynasty, are you gonna do more Necron ? :D
I just want to say, You've probably saved my army from looking like an oily mess. I SUCK at using the Cryptek Armourshade Gloss, and it often pools and dries before I realize it and it looks terrible when I do it. So I tried the Guilliman Flesh method, but instead I did it over Runelord Brass and damn did it actually look really good. Then I just glazed Runelord Brass over it then highlighted with Canoptek Alloy and It actually looks like I knew what I was doing.
Uff, I've now painted 5 Necrons according to these instructions, first of all, these are my best painted Necrons so far ... But my eyes, such hardcore concentration is really not good for my eyes ... Respect that you can do it so easily ...
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures In the grooves of the gun and on the barrel I carefully let a little Tamyia Black Panelliner run into it, now it looks even more extreme because the knobs are now really sticking out and the glowing effect on the edges is stronger. But I still need a lot of practice, I can't get it that clean with the highlighting yet, but the necrons I've painted so far look really good. Thanks for the many tips here :)
Amazing work! I truly love watching your videos and trying to incorporate your techniques in my own models! Any plans on painting a Tyranid model? I'm currently building that army and would love to see how you would do some "eavy contrated space bugs!
I'm a serial try hard who has a hard time spending less then 10 hours on a model. I have an army project that's taken me literally about 12 years from now in is about 3000 points. I'm forcing myself to speed paint the necrons from Indomitus to have an away team for teaching folks how to play. This video is threatening to push me off the wagon.
Incredible! You really encouraged me to finally continue working on my necrons! I love your scheme / recipe and how you make these colors pop! Left you a thumb and subscribed, too. Can't wait to give it a try myself, however I gotta wait for contrasts being available at my retailer again... Please do me a favor and clear one thing up: did you really just used leadbelcher as a primer? A forum suggests to spray a thin grey plus a top and front white shot, followed by a brighter metallic. And, as you stated, Leadbelcher isn't a very bright color, although I used to apply abb black as a basecoat so far... Long story short; can you tell us what you think about grey plus white and what metallic primer color you'd recommend? Rly want to make these guys pop as much as possible :) Keep up the great work!
As I say in the video, I I where to start again, I would do them in Mechanicus Standard Grey and Basecoat the metallics by hand after doing all the black skeleton with a bright metallic, I like Ironbreaker myself, buy something like Vallejo Metal Color Silver or Duraluminium can also work very well. I personally don't like zenithal priming, I prefer to create that contrast myself so I can put it where I want.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Zenithal priming, that was the term! True expert here, appreciate the fast answer very much and'll do so, as it also comes in cheaper this way (in terms of avoiding additional colors)! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
I’m a little confused on how you get the affect with the gulliman like how do you do that fade from light bronze to heavy Bronze, thank you for reading and I love you content
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures alright, I think I get it now, thank you so much! Side note are you going to do more Necron stuff in the future cuz you are very good at it!
Mmmm Red glow is complicated, probably the hardest one to do. I would start from pure black and make the brightest tone a pure red, but it has to be a really intense and pure red pigment to work, something like Kimera The Red or a Heavy Body Acrylic Cadmium Red (that is toxic so be careful with it though) Sorry I can't help you with that more
Chief just called. This channel is still it, its fantastic. As a side note for 'haters of the blue' will you ever be tackling Thousand Sons? I understand that you may wish to do things other than contrast marines and thats cool, just thought I would ask 😀
Hello Juan! Very inspiring work. I am wondering if you thin the Ironbreaker anything before putting it on the model. It looks so smooth and covers very well. I've not had that experience with citadel metallics before
Hey, Juan, do you happen to be able to suggest a NMM recipe to match the szarekhan dynasty copper tones? From what I could tell cryptek alloy is close to rakarth flesh, but I have no good idea how to go about the body copper-like metal here. Seen your copper tutorial and, while beautiful, I feel it doesn’t quite match. Thanks and have a lovely evening!
I tried this out on a couple warriors and have been testing several methods and the closest to your video I found is flesh with a little bit of water. Did you do the same or straight from the pot?
I just removed all the mid-roll adds that TH-cam had added without me knowing! That is from ALL my videos!! Thank you for letting me know, I hate those.
I saw a Reddit post where the user had talked with an actual 'Eavy Metal painter who did some of the Necrons and this is basically the paint process they used (and is wildly inefficient for actually painting an army): (Brass parts) -Base Runelord Brass, -Shade with Cryptek Armourshade Gloss all over, -Reikland Fleshshade and Drucii 1:1 mix in cracks, -Lighter parts repainted with Runelord Brass -(when needed) further highlight with Canoptek Alloy and Stormhost Silver (Silver Parts) -Base Canoptek Alloy -Glaze Runelord Brass -Shade dark areas with Reikland -Shade Cracks with Reikland+Wyldwood 1:1 mix -Optional Glaze with Stormhost if too dark (Black Metal Joints) -Base Iron Warrior+Abaddon Black 1:1 mix -'Eavy Shade of Nuln Oil -Thick Highlight Iron Warrior+Administratum Grey 2:1 mix -Spot Highlight white scar (Normal Metal) -Base Iron Warrior -Shade Agrax+Abaddon 2:1 mix -Highlight Iron Warrior+Stormhost 1:1 mix -Highlight just Stormhost (Sharp blades) -Base Iron Warrior+Stormhost 1:1 -Shade Agrax -Highlight Iron Warrior+Stormhost 1:1 -Highlight Stormhost (Green Orbs) -Base Corax -Layer Moot Green+Flashgits Yellow+White Scar 1:1:1 mix -Glaze moot -Deep Recess shade Caliban Green (Black on the guns) -Base Corvus black -Shade Nuln Oil -Highlight Incubi darkness -Highlight Eshin grey -Highlight Fenrisian+Eshin 1:1 -Spot Fenrisian (Cables) -Base Moot+Waaagh! Flesh 1:1 -Shade Caliban -Highlight Moot -Highlight Moot+Flashgits+White Scar 1:1:1 -Spot White Scar (Dark Metal) -Base Iron Warriors -Shade Bascillicanum grey -Optional spots of Iron Warrior and stormhost. (Gold if you're doing the Royal Warden) -Base Retributor Armour -Shade Reikland -Highlight Liberator Gold -Highlight Stormhost+Liberator 1:1 -Spot highlight Stormhost
Thanks for the insight, that is priceless information. Yeah the Eavy Metal recipes are always ridiculously inefficient for army painting but of course that's not why they are developed in the first place.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I think the most surprising thing to me is that they've actually painted the Box models with all citadel paints (as it was theorized the team would use a ton of non citadel paints) I think I'm definitely just going to use your method because it looks fantastic and will probably take a fraction of the time (while still looking just as good, imo)
That's just false assumptions, the Eavy Metal exclusively uses Citadel Paints as it would only be logical as one of the objectives is to actually sell the paints as well as the models. All those rumors are just started by paint snobbists that like to think Citadel is so bad not even the official GW painting team likes to use them when it's very much the opposite, Citadel Paints are outstanding.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures My thoughts exactly, It wouldn't make sense for the in-house GW team to not use GW paints, especially since it's been proven by many others (and you in this very video!) That it can be done using only GW paints. (And with multiple methods to achieve the same result). One I've seen people say is that they actually use Vallejo chrome for Silver/Gold highlights, even though Stormhost achieves the same effect (or the fact that the team mixes paints and shades to achieve colors/effects that aren't individually sold) Myself being somewhat new to the hobby, I initially believed it to be true, but after reading the post I shared here, I just figured that the team is *actually* just really really good with Citadel paints.
Oh sometimes the DO mix colours, it's very common, in fact some of the new paints like Orruk Flesh are developed to COPY the mixes that the Eavy Metal team develop for their paintjobs (mix of Averland Sunset and Skarshnik Green in this case) But yeah mixing is just part of normal painting so it's a given but not using in house paints it's idiotic.
Really enjoying your videos having binge-watched a bunch this week. With the citadel sprays sold out pretty much everywhere at the mo, my priming options are army painter matt black or citadel grey seer. Would one work better? thanks
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures finished one warrior and enjoyed both the techniques and your style and clarity of instruction so thank you. I did have a doh moment - having primed in grey seer, joints in Mechanicus, I then managed to copy you and armour plate first in leadbelcher. Doh!
The lighting/exposure in the video is pretty high and kinda throws off how this recipe actually looks when you try it.* Once I hit that Fyreslayer flesh step, I was sold. Its pretty easy to control, or if you have to, block out one panel and fix pretty quick. The most important part... it's also consistent, especially important with an army like Necrons. I haven't tried what selectively applied varnishes might look on the armor plates yet, but I am gonna. *Perhaps Juan could do an updated video with his newer studio setup. 😉
Amazing as always ! Not a fan of Necron but damn this look so good ! Are we gonna see bigger models in the future ? Like Abbadon or Great Unclean One ?
Hi! Incredible work! Definitely using your tutorial for my shiny necrons. As it's the first time i try glazing, is it mandatory to use the contrast medium? Would water do the same? What about the vallejo glaze medium (cheaper option)? Thanks!
I highly recommend you use Contrast Medium for the mixes. Water completely mess up the chemistry of Contrast Paints and can lead to severe coffee staining. As for Vallejo Glaze Medium, I personally don't like it so I don't know. You can test it and see, I personally prefer to not mix chemistries and use each paint with each own proprietary medium.
Nice tutorial! I'm trying it by myself currently and while I'm painting, I have 2 questions: 1. Do you use your best Kolinsky brushes when you paint metalics? 2. Do you do something with your brushes, that the tip is stiff? It is looking like you have a pencil instead of a brush. When i get in contact with my mini, the tip is bending all the time. I'm using Raphael 8404.
Yes I use the same brushes for everything. I don't do anything to my brushes the tips will always bend when contact with the mini it's hair, that's normal, mine might appear not to bend because I have a very light touch, it's all about brush control.
Absolutely epic! Glad I've discovered you. But I must ask. How the sam hell is your paint not immediately drying during your white highlights? For the life of me, I can't do the thin highlight in the middle of the blade. My tip dries out almost immediately. I've even tried a retarder, but that removed the purity of the whiteness. I'm in the UK as well, so not exactly hot here either.
You are probably using a very small brush. The larger the brush the more paint it holds and the longer it stays fresh. I use Rosemary and Co Series 33 size 3 and 4 for all my painting. Try a larger brush with a good tip, it will help for sure. Also you can try to use White Ink instead of paint, that can also help. Something like Liquitex White or FW Daler Rowney White.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures ahhh great advice! I am indeed using a small layer GW brush as its got a nice tip still. I'll try a bigger one. Once again, thanks for being so awesome and letting me know 👍🏻
Hi Juan. What brushes are you using? I assume some rather high quality. I also see a fairly large brush but with a sharp tip. Is that a 1 or 2 round? I see your supply list are Raphael 8404 brushes. Just curious on the sizes that are most typical for you. I really enjoy your style and approach. Plus my wife thinks you are pretty cool being a Spaniard. She studied abroad in Grenada and is bilingual.

I tried before this video came out to do the same paint job and made the same basecoat mistake, i actually used the new runelord brass as i thought all the new colours went together which was WAAY too dark. You are right you definitely need a light silver base. Good video looked awesome in the end
Thanks! Yeah, for this method the brightest silver you use the better
this is a great video and super helpfull, its a shame there is non video for flayed ones. I would be super curious to see how you paint them.
Like this plus you can use the recipe I used for the skin cape on my Chaos Warrior

Lol, yeah. That happened
Great tutorial ! I was looking for a tutorial to have the same "Copper" color result on those spooky bois, and also I've seen that you precised their dynasty, are you gonna do more Necron ? :D
Yes, I will do more dynasties in the future
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Yes ! Can't wait to see that ;)
I just want to say, You've probably saved my army from looking like an oily mess.
Awesome! Glad I could help you
Uff, I've now painted 5 Necrons according to these instructions, first of all, these are my best painted Necrons so far ... But my eyes, such hardcore concentration is really not good for my eyes ... Respect that you can do it so easily ...
Try using magnification glasses, your eyes will certainly be better
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures In the grooves of the gun and on the barrel I carefully let a little Tamyia Black Panelliner run into it, now it looks even more extreme because the knobs are now really sticking out and the glowing effect on the edges is stronger.
But I still need a lot of practice, I can't get it that clean with the highlighting yet, but the necrons I've painted so far look really good. Thanks for the many tips here :)
Nice, happy to help
Amazing work! I truly love watching your videos and trying to incorporate your techniques in my own models!
Any plans on painting a Tyranid model? I'm currently building that army and would love to see how you would do some "eavy contrated space bugs!
Yes, I already have the models bought. I don't know when I will be able to tackle them but they are coming
JuanHidalgo Miniatures wow, that’s awesome! I look forward to watching! Thanks for the reply!
Always happy to help!
Makes me want to breakout my Necrons. Thanks a lot Juan.......as if my ADHD wasn’t bad enough. I’ll never get through these models.😫😫😫
It happens to all of us
Brilliant video! Love it :D
Will you be doing more necrons in different schemes, by any chance? :)
Maybe, I have a couple of videos before I get to that
Thank you for this video. I've been looking for the right colors for this dynasty for so long. “Like” is yours ;)
Glad you liked it 😘
I'm a serial try hard who has a hard time spending less then 10 hours on a model. I have an army project that's taken me literally about 12 years from now in is about 3000 points. I'm forcing myself to speed paint the necrons from Indomitus to have an away team for teaching folks how to play. This video is threatening to push me off the wagon.
Well, this was faster than 10 hours so.... 😂
great job as always! could you do Tsarakura dynasty necrons next?
Maybe at some point in the future.
More than happy to help. Thanks for watching 😘
This is such an amazing guide but what is the medium he is referring to or using during the gulliman flesh plus medium step?
Contrast Medium
I’m a little confused on how you get the affect with the gulliman like how do you do that fade from light bronze to heavy Bronze, thank you for reading and I love you content
I just apply it that's all. The paint pooling makes for that effect. You just have to make sure it pools in the right places
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures alright, I think I get it now, thank you so much! Side note are you going to do more Necron stuff in the future cuz you are very good at it!
Maybe but not sure. I have lots of things to in the painting queue
Hey Juan
What if I wanted to do this but have the gauss red instead? what paints should i use instead?
Love your videos!
Mmmm
Red glow is complicated, probably the hardest one to do. I would start from pure black and make the brightest tone a pure red, but it has to be a really intense and pure red pigment to work, something like Kimera The Red or a Heavy Body Acrylic Cadmium Red (that is toxic so be careful with it though)
Sorry I can't help you with that more
Amazing job! Congratulations! How would you paint turquoise pannels instead of the cooper ones?
If you want them metallic check the Alpha Legion video, if you don't check the Thousand Sons one.
Hope that helps!
Chief just called. This channel is still it, its fantastic. As a side note for 'haters of the blue' will you ever be tackling Thousand Sons? I understand that you may wish to do things other than contrast marines and thats cool, just thought I would ask 😀
Yes, the original plan was to do the 18 original legions and that plan is still standing
Wouldn't have thought guilliman flesh would look so good!
How do you advise using the purpose made cryptek armour shade?
You can use it as a recess shade, it actually works very well for that
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures once again, thanks for actually replying! But you wouldn't recommend using it as you have here with the guilliman flesh?
No, never. It's 1: too dark and 2: not the correct hue at all
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I shall purchase some immediately then! Don't suppose you have any affiliated links for the brushes you use?
No sorry, we are working on it but things go slow nowadays
Hello Juan! Very inspiring work. I am wondering if you thin the Ironbreaker anything before putting it on the model. It looks so smooth and covers very well. I've not had that experience with citadel metallics before
Of course, you should ALWAYS thin your paints before applying them as a rule of thumb
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you. How much do you usually thin the metal paints?
As much as I need to. If you are looking for a ratio, that doesn't exist sorry, you need to learn that by feel, each paint is different
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you, Wise one🙏
Hey, Juan, do you happen to be able to suggest a NMM recipe to match the szarekhan dynasty copper tones? From what I could tell cryptek alloy is close to rakarth flesh, but I have no good idea how to go about the body copper-like metal here. Seen your copper tutorial and, while beautiful, I feel it doesn’t quite match. Thanks and have a lovely evening!
I tried this out on a couple warriors and have been testing several methods and the closest to your video I found is flesh with a little bit of water. Did you do the same or straight from the pot?
As always, an extremely helpfull video! Only downside is TH-cam decided to stuff more than 10 commercial breaks into it...
No way!!! I will immediately check that out!
Thanks for letting me know
I just removed all the mid-roll adds that TH-cam had added without me knowing!
That is from ALL my videos!! Thank you for letting me know, I hate those.
Sweet
I saw a Reddit post where the user had talked with an actual 'Eavy Metal painter who did some of the Necrons and this is basically the paint process they used (and is wildly inefficient for actually painting an army):
(Brass parts)
-Base Runelord Brass,
-Shade with Cryptek Armourshade Gloss all over,
-Reikland Fleshshade and Drucii 1:1 mix in cracks,
-Lighter parts repainted with Runelord Brass
-(when needed) further highlight with Canoptek Alloy and Stormhost Silver
(Silver Parts)
-Base Canoptek Alloy
-Glaze Runelord Brass
-Shade dark areas with Reikland
-Shade Cracks with Reikland+Wyldwood 1:1 mix
-Optional Glaze with Stormhost if too dark
(Black Metal Joints)
-Base Iron Warrior+Abaddon Black 1:1 mix
-'Eavy Shade of Nuln Oil
-Thick Highlight Iron Warrior+Administratum Grey 2:1 mix
-Spot Highlight white scar
(Normal Metal)
-Base Iron Warrior
-Shade Agrax+Abaddon 2:1 mix
-Highlight Iron Warrior+Stormhost 1:1 mix
-Highlight just Stormhost
(Sharp blades)
-Base Iron Warrior+Stormhost 1:1
-Shade Agrax
-Highlight Iron Warrior+Stormhost 1:1
-Highlight Stormhost
(Green Orbs)
-Base Corax
-Layer Moot Green+Flashgits Yellow+White Scar 1:1:1 mix
-Glaze moot
-Deep Recess shade Caliban Green
(Black on the guns)
-Base Corvus black
-Shade Nuln Oil
-Highlight Incubi darkness
-Highlight Eshin grey
-Highlight Fenrisian+Eshin 1:1
-Spot Fenrisian
(Cables)
-Base Moot+Waaagh! Flesh 1:1
-Shade Caliban
-Highlight Moot
-Highlight Moot+Flashgits+White Scar 1:1:1
-Spot White Scar
(Dark Metal)
-Base Iron Warriors
-Shade Bascillicanum grey
-Optional spots of Iron Warrior and stormhost.
(Gold if you're doing the Royal Warden)
-Base Retributor Armour
-Shade Reikland
-Highlight Liberator Gold
-Highlight Stormhost+Liberator 1:1
-Spot highlight Stormhost
Thanks for the insight, that is priceless information.
Yeah the Eavy Metal recipes are always ridiculously inefficient for army painting but of course that's not why they are developed in the first place.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I think the most surprising thing to me is that they've actually painted the Box models with all citadel paints (as it was theorized the team would use a ton of non citadel paints)
I think I'm definitely just going to use your method because it looks fantastic and will probably take a fraction of the time (while still looking just as good, imo)
Oh sometimes the DO mix colours, it's very common, in fact some of the new paints like Orruk Flesh are developed to COPY the mixes that the Eavy Metal team develop for their paintjobs (mix of Averland Sunset and Skarshnik Green in this case)
But yeah mixing is just part of normal painting so it's a given but not using in house paints it's idiotic.
Really enjoying your videos having binge-watched a bunch this week. With the citadel sprays sold out pretty much everywhere at the mo, my priming options are army painter matt black or citadel grey seer. Would one work better? thanks
I would do Grey Seer and apply the correct Basecoats over that
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures fab, thanks for the reply! Especially as it's late.
Happy to help 😘
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures finished one warrior and enjoyed both the techniques and your style and clarity of instruction so thank you. I did have a doh moment - having primed in grey seer, joints in Mechanicus, I then managed to copy you and armour plate first in leadbelcher. Doh!
Im happy my videos were helpful, keep on painting
Fantastic video! I just have one question, why don't you use the new armour shade made for the necrons?
Because it doesn't look like the boxart when you do
The lighting/exposure in the video is pretty high and kinda throws off how this recipe actually looks when you try it.* Once I hit that Fyreslayer flesh step, I was sold.
Thanks!
I really dislike painting large models so no, I doubt it.
Any thoughts on what one might use for a similar glow, but red?
No sorry, red Glow is complicated but get the brightest red you can and use that thinned down as a glaze
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures no worries, thanks for the reply.
Once again, thanks for being so awesome and letting me know 👍🏻
Happy to help!
Do you thin contrast paints like normal paint? Or only when you use the medium to thin them?
Only when I clearly say I used medium
Hi!
First of all thanks for watching! And if you ever come near Bilbao let me know! Secondly I use Rosemary and Co Series 33 size 3 and 4 now. I love those brushes
Now my wife wants to go to Spain... again. She has wanted to spend more time in the North. (sorry, bad spelling on Granada) Maybe once the world stops coming apart at the seams. Thanks for the info.
