I start with 58 chains for a child but the best thing to do is to measure the head size and then work a chain that is 1” less than the head size 😊

i've tried to make this twice now and each time the starting edge is much tighter than the final edge. Do I just need to start with a looser starting chain?

Yes! Make sure your starting chain and first row are loose. If you’re struggling still you could size up your hook for the first row 😊
