    • @vogonford
      @vogonford 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Honestly, with his injury history, I want to see him as full-time DH. He's just so great with the bat that it's probably better for his health and for the Angels win record that he stays in for whole seasons without destroying his arm.

    • @noahmcdaniel4920
      @noahmcdaniel4920 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Mr Clean He doesn’t have “too many arm injuries”. Are you not familiar with the game of baseball? He’s had TJ and a grade 1 forearm strain while coming back. Any kind of setback from TJ is extremely common and this is a very minor one. Over 25% of *active MLB pitchers* have had tommy john.
      In other words, if there’s a pitcher on the mound, there’s a 25% chance he’s had TJ.

    • @RustyShakleford01
      @RustyShakleford01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That means the average triple A guy could easily hang around in Nippon ball for a career. No so in the majors. It's nowhere close to the same level of play.

    • @KnightJauneArc
      @KnightJauneArc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      @@RustyShakleford01 yes, but the scout's statement is essentially calling AAA and NPB high-school level players when that is way far from the truth.

    • @BKF0
      @BKF0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      @@davidmontgomery1442 I've heard him degrade NPB plenty of times. I think it speaks volumes to Pete's insecurity that he feels the need to defend the fact that he has more hits than Ty Cobb. Also, MLB in the 1970s versus NPB in the late 1990s are a lot more comparable than Pete would like to think.

    Being a Mariners fan, I'm still super salty about Ohtani leaving us at the altar, but I have to concede that I'm only salty because his swing is so sweet. Also, having his buddy Yusei Kikuchi finally turning a corner for us helps a little bit.

    • @tripleoo0

      It's funny to think about. Last year, he was all about being tricky to figure out because his delivery was so weird. This year, he almost looks a little like Marco Gonzales, except he throws 97, not 89. And the ball still comes out really, really late. I have to imagine that it feels as fast as Ohtani's fastball at the plate.

    So glad to see a breakdown of this, it’s incredible just to see his reception and work in the US. Love from Tokyo.
    Also fun fact, his two way play while definitely unique, it is a bit of a testament of Japanese baseball from what I see. What I mean is that in high school ball and their koshien and college baseball, the best player is arguably always the pitcher (so much so that it’s become a common saying like “of course he’s good, he is/was a pitcher”). Not sure of the complete process but at least in high school (which japan baseball is hardcore mind you), the best hitter would arguably also be trained to be the best pitcher or vice versa. Many even eventually end up as the face of the organizations such as become the team captain. After high school or college, these pitchers who go pro in Japan usually get a different fielding role or so. It’s kind of why you see some incredible throwing and batting by Ichiro especially in his prime, his original position was that of a pitcher back in the day. There are of course exceptions to this rule such as Tanaka, Darvish, and Matsui, but it’s a fun little example of how Ohtani kind of exemplifies japan baseball’s teaching tactics.

    i attended his home pitching debut. i had my feet stretched out to the empty seat in front of me for the first 6 innings and had to use the restroom.
    "you can't possibly leave," says my friend sitting next to me.
    "there's no way i can hold it," i reply.
    so i'd like to think i'm personally responsible for jinxing the perfecto.
    and the broadcast you show jinxing ohtani is the oakland broadcast; however, i do recall watching the angels' broadcast replay and they, too, had the jinx. great vid, as always

    The only reason Ohtani won't win MVP's for as long as he is a "90th percentile" player on both sides is because the league and fans won't want to see the same guy win it several years in a row. Thinking of MVP as actual Value, Ohtani is worth about 2.5 90th percentile players. Because to replace him you would need a winning pitcher, a well above average hitter, AND a late game replacement fielder (looking at the games he played on the field) AS WELL as a top 20 base stealer.
