I loved Armada 1. Did not like Armada 2 with the ships being as tough as paper, and the game being more complicated. The simplicity of the 1st game is what made it appealing. Just played through Armada 1 again now that it is on GoG, and thinking of giving A2 another chance.
To make the game more fun and realistic, what you can do in non campaign missions (personalized missions & multiplayer) is turn down weapon strength, it will make ships last longer and hence battles are more exciting and star trek like. (ships take longer to be incapacitated and destroyed). You can also increase the map depth & set the physics to 'star trek' physics. These setting really optimize and enhance your gameplay experience, a must for me. Strongly recommend it for maximum fun.
I still love this game enough to have multiple modded versions on my desktop. My favorite version is a rebalanced take on the original game, mostly with the in game ship models. It really isn't that hard to modify the odf files in order to allow the ships to be more formidable. You can also copy and rename existing ship and weapon files in order to change what they can do for specific ships. Meaning that you can take the existing Intrepid model, rename it the armored Voyager, change the textures, increase the ship's maximum level of health, change the damage value of photon torpedoes, and rename them transphasic torpedoes, and have fun blasting anything on the map. If nothing else, you can have fun making the Borg and 8472 formidable adversaries.

About stealing ships in Armada II: it's not only not worth it - as you said, it' also very difficult, because as soon as the shields are down, most ships explode almost imediately, and even if not, in most cases it has also lost his engines or life support systems... so all your crew, that you beam over, dies or something like that. Only Borg and Ferengi can steal ships. that's why I hate it, when it's a mission objective.

Borg vs dominion would be an amazing game as the dominion is closer to the Borg than the humans and it would be cool to see more aliens in the gamma quadrant but still have the four main races playable aka federation, Klingon, Romulans, and cardassians
Yeah I think the Dominion would have been a little more than the Borg could handle, if the Dominion knew what was coming. The Dominion was also great with genetics so I wonder...
I hardly ever use the different height options, except when scouting when I always send them as low as possible, as I can hardly ever get them selected if I send them high.

Getting a repair ship out there may have taken too long. If I recall correctly, they travel slowly and might not even have warp. It's been a few years since I've played this.

The hero ships really should have been like the starbases, in that the shields absorb all damage until they're gone. That was one of the mods I did to my copy.
Yeah, I hobestly thought they were but playing through later levels that is obviously not the case. You are pretty defenseless at Warp due to thd sensor blackout but it does seem shields work

The Borg "voice" is, if I recall, the same one from the original game, but it's too soft, for want of a word, as well as being a bit on the slow side. Using the same style voice from the TV would've been perfect, though the lack of a stereo effect dumbs it down somewhat.
Becasue the game is pretty rare. The print run of it was rather short and it's one of the few Star Trek games which wasn't a total abomination and it's not very hard to get to work on modern day systems. Starfleet Command III I believe also goes for a rather large amount iirc. Basically "it's rare and has Star Trek in the title"
Good to see another playthrough. I must say I usually -loathe- commentary play-throughs, but your voice is a lot more pleasant than some (especially with the accent) and you don't go off on random tangents; you tend to keep to game-play or Trek trivia not all of us might know, and you'll admit when you fuck-up a bit.
I bought Armada 1 in the used section back when you could buy used PC games, I bought it for 4 dollars, a great deal what a bargain, and I loved the game from the start, I still play it to this day a lot. I did not like Armada 2, everything is so small , I guess because of the resolution, and the ships are so fragile, I go in with a full group of Akiras, and they last a few seconds, bummer. and the feel and look is so strange, I always go back to Armada 1, and Birth of the Federation is another favorite of mine.
3D Tactical mode... I remember going through an entire mission in that because I forgot how to return to grid view. Wasn't as difficult as I expected... I never understood why people consider bombing planets to be 'un-Federation', when it's only bombing CIVILIANS that would bother them.

And it's funny you mention DS9, I find it odd that we keep having these Borg plots and whatnot, when the cannon has the perfect set up for an RTS, the Dominion war. I'd love to relive the second battle of DS9, the taking of Chin'toka, and the final push to Cardassia prime (this time without reused footage). Plus, I want a playable Dominion race.

I loved Armada 1, but didn't like Armada 2 at all. I wanted to like it so much cuz I loved Armada 1 so much, but if felt like a completely different game. They ruined the Borg IMO. Wrong voice & the bases look all wrong. Didn't like any of the changes to the Borg, (my favorite race). I also didn't like the increased complexity, but I'm generally not a RTS fan. Other than it being called "Star Trek," this really didn't feel anything like Armada 1 to me.
Gotta say the graphics do not age well the fleet ops has great graphics but the game severely lacks they took away most of the game, they gave us the dominion but sacrificed cardasians and 8472...it's also broken mostly in balance which takes away fun. I will agree never liked the steam runner being only good for artilary strikes which made no sense. Also took out warp feature another fail.

I bought it 10 years ago when it was new and still have the original CD, case and manual, same for all my games that came in DVD Cases

What I like from the Galaxy Class ship is it deals more damage than the sovereign and it can attack Nexus without taking hits from it

You can't build repair ships in this mission. They can warp, though, but it's slow.
