It's truly something important, not just to me personally, but to the survival of our species and to hundreds if not thousands of other species. It's not a toilet, it's not a dump, it has the potential to sustainably feed our entire population if handled properly. It has the potential to power our city's and homes with free, clean electricity and not to mention, the most fun I ever have is playing in the water, surfing, kayaking, boats, swimming and fishing. I just love the water.

A couple of years ago I witnessed a police officer pulling over a man for throwing a handful of plastic trash out his car window! I am so glad to see more and more people start to care. This was in California. Thank you for being on the frontlines of this massive issue! God bless you all!

Good question! For future systems, the answer is no - we aim to have a system that can autonomously capture plastic. That means a vessel will only return when the plastic needs to be collected. The plastic in this video was caught by System 001/B - our system developed for iterative testing. In order to monitor this testing we had a vessel stationed nearby during this time
@@theoceancleanup It strikes me that, if you have 50 or so of these systems to juggle they will very soon fill with plastic and need emptying. You will surely need a vessel constantly on hand?
For System 001/B - as it was a system developed for testing - there was a vessel stationed nearby. However, for future systems we will conduct Environmental Impact Assessments to ensure the system can remain autonomous and marine life is safe! That way vessels only have to return for the plastic when needed.

While that sounds like a great idea, unfortunately metal is not the ideal material for this system. Our ocean Systems consist of a long floater that sits at the surface of the water and a skirt that hangs beneath it. A cork line above the skirt prevents debris from escaping underneath. Every Nation in the world could supply one vessel at no cost to assist these people in their research and cleanup activities. I wouldn't cost that much but would be a great help to bring the oceans back to their full clean and pristine condition condition. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK The Ocean Cleanup!
While we would appreciate all the help, that would make for a lot of boats - and quite a carbon footprint! This is why we have designed our ocean system to work autonomously, using the natural currents of the ocean to capture and retain plastic.
