    Pat, I rarely comment but want you to know I watch you every day. I love your videos. They’re always entertaining and I usually learn something. I take care of my mom who has dementia so I need my quilting outlet. Your aqua colored quilt is stunning! Thank you for posting every day. I know it can’t be easy, but it is always enjoyed! 💕

      I didn't start quilting till after my mom past away, she also had dementia, and I so wish I had started quilting sooner it would have been a wonderful stress outlet for me. Bless you for caring for your mom it is in no way an easy task. Some where inside your mom she is grateful for your care she just may not be able to express it. You are an angle

    My mother-in-law's sister made her and my father-in-law a quilt as a wedding present in 1953. She let us use it for years. The fabrics in the blocks gave out, and my sister patched in another piece of fabric in different places when this happened. But over the years, it really started to fall apart, so I quit using it and just stored it. In 2016, our house flooded and in the clean up, i found the quilt and returned it to her. She was happy to get it back, no matter the condition, as her sister had passed away years ago. My first large bed quilt was a replica of the pattern of that quilt, except I put sashing between the blocks. I still use it on my bed as it reminds me of the original.

    My grandfather had 6 sisters and they all quilted. When they would visit I would watch them try to teach my mom to quilt. But she never did make one. So quilting skipped a couple of generations until it landed on me. Lol. I would give anything to have one of their quilts. They hand pieced and hand quilted. I have made it a point to give my grandchildren a quilt made by me with the hope they get to pass it on. None of my daughters have taken up quilting either.

      Blues and rock'n roll for me, with a side of new Americana, when I'm working in my quilt studio. Even sing along, but only when alone, because my singing voice sounds EXACTLY like my younger sister's, who was unceremoniously asked to not return to our First Methodist Church choir practice one evening: (choir leader's insistent rapping on the music stand with her conductor's wand-- "Somebody's off! Somebody's off! Then proceded to go down the rows, one at a time, to discover the guilty party. No amount of cringing behind her hymnal could save her.) Doesn't seem quite religious, does it? Our voices are like North Carolina mountain singers, and half a tone flat. Sorta like Gillian Welch, if you're familiar with her... ha When the going gets intricate, I can just focus on the work at hand and block out any noise in the area. Especially useful as an avid reader who doesn't like to be interrupted.

    My Grandma made a quilt out of clothing and my Grandpa's socks. It was an awesome quilt and it was heavy. I don't know what ever happened to it. I have about 4 other quilts that she made. I also have quilts my mom made when I was little. One of them I helped with hand quilting it. Dad made a quilting frame for my mom and I still have it.

    There are/were no other quilters in my family. My Nanny (paternal grandmother) was an amazing seamstress, but no quilting (she also did other needlework/tapestry/cross-stitch). I fell in love with quilts as a child... probably from my love of reading (Little House on the Prairie?) and the books I read mentioning Quilts. Anyhow, I decided to learn, and I love it. I'm not great at it, but I think the people I have made quilts for have loved them (4 of my 5 kids and 1 grandchild). Thank you for continually putting out materials that helps people like my feel confident enough to keep moving forward!

    Watching Angela Walter's quilting videos really inspired and gave me the courage to attempt free motion machine quilting. I was so nervous to attempt it before, afraid it would look terrible. She says "A finished quilt is better than a perfect pieced top." Once I tryed it, I loved it. I don't have a stitch regulator on my machine, so sometimes my stitches are uneven. If you look so are Angela's. And she's a professional quilter. She quilts Tula Pink's quilts. Overall it looks great. Now I have fun quilting clouds, swirls, stars, hearts and whatever else I think up. Always doodling designs on paper to learn muscle memory.

    I am blessed to have two quilts made by aunts, my dad’s sisters, given to me as wedding gifts; that will soon be 56 years. I also have two make by older sisters. One from my sister has many repairs because it has been much used.
    In regard to music while sewing, my friend and I sew on Wednesday at our senior center. When we have been working a long day, a group of line dancers come in across the hall with some peppy music. When they ask if we’re bothered by their music. We say oh wow it gets us going again😊.

    Sadly my daughter’s mom-in-law, Branka Beslic, and I are the quilters in the family. And we both subscribe to Pat Sloan. 😊. No one seems to have sewn quilts. My mom-in-law crocheted an afghan as did my cousin (hers was a granny square one, plus one she got from her dad’s mom). So no quilts in my family. However, I made sure all 5 grandkids had quilts plus the ex of my daughter’s kids and step kids (3 step and 2 half to my one grandkid) had quilts toddler-sized quilts. I also sent queen-sized to the 3 adult kids. And my spouse has one. So I guess I am the grandma doing quilts. Ha ha.

    Perfect timing for the info on FMQ. I have FINALLY stopped being afraid of it. And I've completed three quilts in the last couple of weeks...one for my grandson with clouds, mountains, water, and dinosaur feet, the Boo Crew with spider webs, and then the Spooky Box with pumpkins and leaves. Each one has been easier, and better, than what I used to do. Just doing it is definitely the key. Thanks again for the encouragement.

    I purchased a hoop frame for FMQ. You can put your domestic machine on it or a Longarm up to 19 inches. I also use stencils, I found that it helps me control my speed. There are also tear Aways or Pantographs that you put on the back of the frame and use a laser light with it.

Regarding quilts made by family members - I'm so blessed. I have one only my mom made which is a tied flannel very heavy utilitarian quilt. She was not a quilter. I have quilts made by a lady who was like a mother to me, and a piece of the only quilt my mother-in-law made which was a sunbonnet sue, and quilts made by my husbands grandmother. One of hers is an album quilt and I got to meet the ladies whose names are on it over 50 years ago. I have other quilts too...one my neighbor gave me made by his grandmother and he is now 89 yrs old. I am blessed!

    In regard to your lovely aqua squares blocks, I had a log cabin quilt that was a wedding present. It was made to fit a queen-size bed. The Amish ladies who made it added a really wide border to get the length needed. Maybe you could add some more blocks and then put a wide border on it to get it to the right size. That way you wouldn't have to make so many more blocks. They used a coordinating solid so the border wouldn't detract from the log cabin blocks. I would say that border was probably about twelve inches wide on three sides.

    I taught myself to quilt from a book when I was a teenager. I had no money so my fabric was old clothes. I do notice that quilts I bound with bias binding have no problems but the ones with bias have the problem you describe, binding split on one thread. If the quilt were wall hangings probably would be no problem. But most of quilts were well used.

    Love your idea of getting panels to practice quilting around. I use to quilt my quilts but only really did straight lines or stippling.. I haven't done it now in years so I'll have to learn again. But with MG i will have to keep my quilt size small (childs, lap, wall or table runners) for example.. But i'm looking forward to my fall projects and I think panels would be great for child's quilts, and wall hangings to practice on. : )

    To check the backing size fold the top and back in fourths. Lay them with two edges aligned. The margin is easily shown.

    I’m the first and only quilter in my family. I’m 61. None of my daughters have shown interest in following me.

      I couldn't interest my daughter in sewing at all - she preferred sports. I am the only sewist in my family - Mom COULD but didn't love it - neither sister is interested. I made garments mostly until I was in my forties - it's been quilts ever since - I'm 72 now. Maybe we're the unicorns Pat spoke of. LOL

      I'm calling it a radish, the designer doesn't tell you what she drew it's just a vegetable

      Seeing the fabric piece, it looks like what my grandmother called Rutabaga.
      I like the flavor of radishes better than Rutabaga.

    how does single fold binding hold up to self binding my rolling over the backing?

    • @PatSloan
      @PatSloan  ปีที่แล้ว

      a separate binding, of any kind, is preferred. Once you binding wears out when you pull to the front from the back, you have a mess to fix it.

    Pat, what type of washer do you use to wash a quilt? A front load? I feel front load is not enough water to really wash a quilt.

    • @PatSloan
      @PatSloan  ปีที่แล้ว

      i have never owned a front loader so no clue about how they work

    • @pamthomas4639
      @pamthomas4639 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PatSloan thank you for the answer. I have a front load and for 30 yreas had a Maytag. I don't like my front load. They are "water savers" but you can't wash large things as they barely get wet. My Maytag was working fine when my husband thought I needed an upgrade.
      So I hardly ever wash a quilt. Just baby quilts I am gifting.
