Plastic really is...all around us. From our phones to our clothes to the shoes on our feet-plastic is tough to avoid. And for good reason! Plastic is a great invention that is flexible, durable, tunable, and, perhaps most importantly, super cheap.
But plastic also has a massive carbon footprint and wreaks havoc on our natural ecosystems. And while some think it is time we ditch the material all together, what if we came up with a more environmentally friendly upgrade instead?
Both options are easier said than done, one of the major challenges of reinventing plastic is finding a sustainable replacement that can successfully do all the things that plastic can do all while being both bio-based and biodegradable.
Luckily, there are teams of people working hard to discover and create this miracle material.

Hey Seekers! In the video, we mention the "smell" of methane-but as some of you have aptly pointed out, methane itself is odorless (and colorless, for that matter). The smell, traditionally associated with sewer gas, actually arises from methane mixing with hydrogen sulfide, a gas that commonly comes from decaying organic matter, or tert-butylthiol, an additive that is often added to natural gas for safety. Thanks for making sure our science is up to 'sniff!'

What complete patronising corporatist nonsense! They don't choose what's best, they choose what makes the most profit or what's convenient. Built in obsolescence is not what's best. It's what ensures they can resell you the same item every few years. Bags that kill half the planet are not best, they're convenient. Plastic is not what's best - not my a long shot. There are millions of situations where plastic could be replaced by something less harmful, but it would cost more or be harder to make.
Yes, the cost of getting rid of plastic may be taking a reusable bag to the supermarket, or using glass bottles, or making your electronic goods out of something a little harder to work with. So what?

Methane doesn't have smell, it is artificially added for safety reasons.

ive seen countless new plastic replacements on the internet, only problem is they are usually expensive af for "no reason" which is why you only ever see them on facebook videos
Would love for this to become mainstream in the next couple of years! But we really need to find a way to break down what we already have floating around (literally) I know we are working on 2 different types of bacteria that produce enzymes which are capable of breaking down certain types of plastic, but I’m worried we will achieve a way of breaking down plastics and then just keep using them...

*Seeker:* can i ask something please? you didnt cover the degradable aspect of this new material. Does the plastic degrade and thus we are left with polymer chains in the environment? at the moment the sea is chugging with tiny micro beads. Or does the plastic when it degrades somehow turn into something else?
Whatever breaks down bacteria can probably break down PHA. I'm unsure beyond that. EDIT: *anaerobic bacteria
well i was working in a plastic manufacturing company before.. we had a product development department and experimented a little with bio plastics.. the thing is that the source shouldn't be petrol but wood or plant based and then those bio plastics usually don't leave microplastic.. they can be broken down into nothing by bacteria, fungi and so on.. i mean we have found certain bacteria and fungi that can basically eat certain types of plastics.. the problem with it is that great now we have a way to get rid of polyurethane for example.. but that's only a fraction of the used styrene polymeres we produce.. it doesn't help with polystyrene, abs, polyethylene, etc. etc.. well polyethylene COULD be burned.. when you burn pe it's breaking down into water and co2.. however this is the worst you could do in terms of energy and carbon footprint because producing it in the first place needs lots of energy.. so recycling the plastics is always the way better option..
but recycling plastics isn't all to easy really.. the company that i worked for had a bunch of grinders and bought lots of scrap plastics back from customers, leftovers from deep drawing or just failed attempts that didn't work etc.. however the problem about it is that it's not so easy to distinguish one plastic from the other just by looking at it and if you for example mix abs and ps the plastic is ruined.. it will shatter like glass..
that's why the seperation is really important but that's the hardest part.. and this is the reason we have so much waste instead of companies that bother to recycle..
once we had a customer that send us abs but there was pvc mixed in.. now the problem is that for pvc extrusion you use different machines and that you run them way colder for pvc than abs so the machine blew up and we had a ginormous damage.. it gave a huge fight with this customer and we didn't trade with them for a long time anymore..
so really plastic would not be so bad if it would be handled better so it can be reused as you can basically recycle it indefinitely if you keep it clean and mix a little fresh and new plastic within from time to time.. just that it isn't handled well, gets mixed up or formed into products where it's not really seperateable from other things anymore..
DiyEcoProjects be great if plastic is seed based or some sort of food based for animals or plants when thrown out

We can actually use sugarcane and have a higher production value than what we can get from hemp now. Sugar cane is more efficient than Hemp for production of Biofuels and is currently used in over 20% of the fuel used to power vehicles in Brazil

@@TheFalseShepphard My guess would be to compete with countries like Saudi Arabia and the OPEC, who can basically lower the price of oil at will by flooding the market with it. But that just protects our oil companies. If we want to be independent from the OPEC, then I think renewables are definitely the way to go.

Great idea. One question though. Can the alternate plastic compete with the shelf life that current plastics provide if it can be degraded easily in a home compost?.. mean, does a microbial contamination render all such packaged products useless then?
I worked as a buyer for a plastics company, spending about $10mil per year on our raw materials. Not a single one of my vendors referred to the resin as “Nurdles.” I see that term when googling it, but when working in the industry, we definitely did not use that term. I’ve never heard them called that before. We always referred to them as resin collectively, or resin pellet individually.
Brazil have technology to produce bioplastic from sugar cane since 1995!
Side effects include razing the Amazon rainforest to grow said sugar cane. Try again Brazil.

You know I'm watching this now, summer 2020, where the world is facing a pandemic and the fuzzy cloud that is politics.
I feel like politics are literally just lead by a bunch of people with strong opinions who do nothing but argue with each other. I support some politicians, who really serve to represent the people, but certainly not the system as a whole. THESE are the people who should possess the most power in the world-the scientists & the engineers. They have the potential to end hunger through regenerative agriculture, they have the power to end poverty through smart urban planning & infrastructure, they have the power to create a healthy planet that doesn't kill itself in an unsustainable loop. You can transform plastic into oil again, and the best thing is that you do not have to separate the plastic, making the process cheaper, the bad thing is that it would not reduce emissions, but at least it would be an incentive to clean the seas and land, and stop extracting oil from the ground

There's nothing magic about hemp, it's just a good source of cellulose.
The most common cellulose-based bioplastic, cellulose acetate, is really slow to biodegrade unassisted.

Would be a massive step for humanity and all if we went cold turkey with plastic and started to share and exchange with echother also connecting with stores better bringing in your own bags and bottles etc, but as humans we need to replace what is taken out..
In Denmark we have something called "pant" it's where they will add 14 cents in cost to all glass bottles/cans, 22 cents for half liter bottle and 44 cents for anything bigger, we then have these bottle machines we can return our bottles in to get that extra cost back in store credit or cash, so there is almost never any bottles in bins or thrown on the street, because if someone throws a bottle a homeless person or a student on low cash will pick it up and recycle it for cash, as an example sometimes there are huge parties in parks in the summer, and there are thousands of cans and bottles floating around, but there will be atleast 20 people picking the empty cans up and easily earning $100 + each, this is very effective, also we have been using milk cartons made out of paper for centuries, i don't understand why some countries still use plastic containers for something like milk.

A company called avani eco has bioplastics that would easily replace single use and packaging plastics, other types of plastics don't necessarily need to be replaced by a plastic like product, some can be replaced with metal or glass and while you pay more, they last longer
