For me, she was simply LA REGINA. Who sang a more diverse repertoire?? Who sang a more diverse repertoire for as long?? She sang Saint-Saëns’ Catherine D’Aragon at the Liceo in her 69th year! She had such a splendid success that afterwards the entire backstage crowd was in tears. She finally commented something to the effect that if her performance was so great why was everyone crying. Which of course changed all the tears to smiles. She was THE nicest diva we ever talked with after performances. And I stand by my opinion that her Norma is to this day in a class by itself. If you ever heard it “live” you could never forget it-vocally, musically, or dramatically. Her “bashers” are totally ludicrous (and pathetic to boot). She was simply one of the greatest sopranos in history.
I have not listened to all great sopranos :) (though I was raised in the backstage of the Kirov opera & have listened opera all my life, thanks to the internet on the world's map scale). Nevertheless I dare to asume she was THE GREATEST SOPRANO in history. Not only because of her absolutely divine voice, her superb musical culture but also because of her personality. Thanks God I speak languages and Spanish is my fluent favorite, so I have watched probably all videos with Monserrat (her interviews) or about her. Hard to imagine another such a triumphal Diva being such a humble, sincere and great-hearted personality. Love her forever. We are blessed to having her recordings. Ten times more blessed are those who had a chance to see and hear her live singing.

Her voice is so beautiful that it touches your soul and brings tears to your eyes. Seeing Michael Angelo's Pieta in real life, or anything of beauty created by someone who has "love" in their hearts/souls has the same effect. It's something that passes from them to you. If that makes sense.
She has always been, is and will be the best evidence of the God's divine Grace... my dream is to come one day to the place she rests in peace, kiss the ground and leave the most beautiful white roses on her eternal bed.
