One of my favorite performances by Regine and one of my favorite songs. You don't need to speak the language to enjoy the performance. Thanks for this reaction! Regine deserves the title Queen Regine.
Another one of my favorite Filipina singers is Lea Salonga. Very different vocally from Regine, but they are contemporaries. (Regine is less than a year older than Lea. They are both in their early 50s now.) Lea started performing in musical theater at age 7 and did musicals, albums, concerts, TV and film from 7-17 in the Philippines. Her international big break came when she got the lead role in MISS SAIGON. She premiered the show in London at 18, won the Olivier at 19, premiered the show on Broadway at 20 and won every major theater award including the Tony Award. Lea is also the singing voice for 2 Disney princesses: Jasmine ("A Whole New World") and Mulan ("Reflection").
And here are two connections between Lea and Regine:
--They were both guests of Sarah Geronimo (another great Filipino singer) in one of her concerts in 2013. The three of them did a Streisand medley! (Note: I didn't like the video of this performance with the highest number of views because the video and sound are not in sync in that video!)
--Regine did an online birthday concert fundraiser for one of her favorite charities in April 2020. She and Lea did a musical medley for the concert. They sound great together. FYI: They are not singing live nor did they record their parts together. Lea mentioned in an interview that she was sent the track, recorded her part, then sent it to Regine.

Loved your reaction! Yes, Barbra is one of her biggest musical influences. In the Philippines, we call her the “Asia’s Songbird”. She’s like the fusion of Mariah + Whitney + Celine in terms of vocal process and influence to the new gen.

Yes Barbra Streisand is her Idol and may have influence on her. She di a cover of Papa Can You Hear Me from the movie Yentl in one of her concerts. She was young then and it is a must watch.

Regine is a big inspiration to many of the younger up and coming Filipina singers, especially Katrina Velarde. Kat recently did a live performance of this song with Troy Larretta that is incredible. Honoring the Queen but adding that “Katrina” flair. It’s really impressive stuff. Here’s a link

Just got to this…okay…another story: At Katrina’s first solo concert 2019, she was about to launch into ARAW GABI and her microphone cut off…and her idol Regine appears from the back of the stage singing the song. Katrina just lost it…totally dumbfounded and could hardly sing the song with her. She counseled her, “Don’t be afraid of success, Kat…” Was lovely moment.
Also, years later Kat stepped up her game and did a Troy Laureta arrangement that takes this song to a whole new level. Regine tweeted her approval once she heard it. Studio session of it is good, she does it live but I swear there is some effect added to the microphone that…well…is irritating IMHO. Anyway, gone on for a while again with my little stories. 😊 Thanks for covering Pinoy singers!
