We went from a RTS drought to an over saturation. Would be good to have a series about RTS releases over the last 1-2 years that are doing well. I don't have time to try or keep up with everything but would like a see a tldr of what's doing well.
Oversaturation is one thing... but there is really little meaningful innovation. It boils down to SC II, Command and Conquer, Supreme Commander/Total Annihilation copycats, with occasional Company of Heroes or Age of Empires thrown here and there. And no... Adding "deck building" or "super power to shift the balance" is no innovation, it is a single mechanic more fitting a single game mode - a gimmick. My guess is... most of those will fade into obscurity so fast we won't even notice many of their releases.
12:30 Eyes of War misses the best example of that genre, I feel. Sure you got Natural Selection/ Sillica/Tremulus/Savage, but for the more singleplayer skirmish and that historic setting I cannot recommend 'Rise & Fall: Civilisations at War' enough. It, too, had a 'control your hero' mode, and it had neat mechanics like transport ships not making your units disappear, but having them walk on top and fight during boarding actions
I was thinking of Rise and Fall as well. It was a cool idea, but unfortunately the game didn't have much of an impact at its time and is mostly forgotten today. I still have the demo CD, which was given away for free at an electronic store, lying somewhere next to my PC.
I got into Creeper World some years ago, it's a great singleplayer title that ends up being an unusual mix of RTS and tower defense, and while it's often played like a turtle there's ways to speed through missions as well. Creeper World 3 is probably the best entry points in the series, or Particle Fleet: Emergence as a spaceship spin-off. A great comfy turtling series. Somehow it's had more entries than most RTS franchises ever manage and got its start long ago as Flash games. One of the notable features of the series is the built-in map creation, sharing, and browsing tools with pretty powerful scripting. It's allowed for a wide variety of community maps that even introduce their own game modes. There's even a level generator for endless play, though it doesn't compare to the campaigns.
The custom maps people have made really keep me coming back to this series. As well as the normal tower defence maps there's puzzle games, maps where you play as the Creeper itself and paint the map, and in Creeper World 4 there's First Person Shooter maps because it finally went 3D. Definitely recommend giving the series a look if you haven't tried any of them before.
What I don't like about Dino Lords is, that it won't be a classical RTS, but you play your lord and command your troops like in the Overlord games. About Age or Respair... They are using many many many assets of existing Stronghold games, like the quarry, grannary, church and especially the mill etc.
I would definitely include Sea Power, a game that recently entered early access. It's a super realistic tactical naval simulator set in the cold war. Sure, you "only" control a carrier group, but once a big NATO carrier deploys all its full complement of aircraft, there is more than enough going on. While the game is definitely early in its early access phase, battles get very tense.
I’m still waiting for a true successor to the original Star Trek Armada, I just want a space game without the use of full 3D maps, just give me a top down view and let me smash fleets of ships into each other.
The problem with the new homeworld games that look great is customization, I mean, we don't have time for this in an RTS, I barely have time to play and don't want to spend hours is customization, I want to have cool units creates by devs like any other RTS.
I think an RTS where you could predesign ships would be amazing. Then at high skill levels you could try to make modifications on the fly to counter opponents, I like the idea.
I hope they would take a risk by making Age of Empires 5 set in the 1870s - 1970s era with the subtitle End of Empires, fulfilling the one concept art they had when the original 3 was in development. This era would demand a different gameplay from 2, 3, and 4, so it wouldn't necessarily compete with themselves.
Pretty impressive list for a genre that has been dormant for years until recently... Will any of those have enough success for the mainstream to notice though ? We'll see
What about Front Edge, you can already try it(at least demo variant) in Russian VK Games. The game is playing pretty well now, so I think a release in the Q1 2025 is quite likely
In the Tempest Rising Demo right now. It’s just not ready. There are just so many conflicting design issues right now. It needs another 6 months or a year to figure out what it wants to be.
@@commanderwookiecopc806 Interesting. So they're another human faction? Not gonna lie, I thought the 3rd Faction was going to be an alien one, like the Scrin in C&C Tiberium Wars/Kane's Wrath.
I hope some of these games have good single player/co op campaigns. I know many people like multiplayer but a good campaign is ESSENTIAL to a good RTS imo. Most recent RTS i played was Terminator Dark fate and its campaign was hella fun .
14:29 I've got a really good feeling that they will make a definitive edition of crusader too. From a pure speculative point of view, they have all the reasons to continue the trend :)
Have you seen Dawn of War 3 and Company of Heroes 3? Yikes is all I can say. I “demo”-ed CoH3 and uninstalled it after a few minutes. Had a truck with a MG like 5cm in front of infantry, the infantry took almost no damage… They should’ve just been honest and made a mobile game, like they clearly wanted to.
"If I do say so myself" is often used to mitigate sounding arrogant. You can't say that about something you had no part in. It's the same thing with people dedicating songs they haven't written or performed to others... It sounds dumb.
One I'm excited for is Kaiserpunk, coming early 2025. Looks like an ANNO style game with really in depth civilisation and economy gameplay, and the combat looks sick too
So, falling frontier kind of reminds me of Nexus: The Jupiter Incident based on the footage. Now there's a great game that I wish could have a followup. I backed the kickstarter for a sequel back in the day, but it never reached its goal.
I knew of a good few of them buts its always nice to see new ones or be reminded of the older ones on my wishlist. I always appreciate the AoE 1 music at the end it makes my memberberries happy. On a side note i would like to see a 7th Legion and Ground Control remaster some day.
Your section on Eyes of War makes me curious if you've ever covered Executive Assault 1 & 2. Perhaps not masterpieces, I nonetheless think they've both done the "commander and soldier" thing pretty well.

I already bought the remake of warcraft 1. The new character models look great but the more i looked at the models in the dungeon maps the more they looked out of place. They added QOL improvements like selecting 12 units at one and being able to use the right mouse button. But it's some little things they took away. The animations in the mission briefings, you saw the orc cleaning his blade or the wizard moving his moustache. Gone. The 3D popup maps to represent every mission. Gone. Always online connectivity to play. Sucks Sorry Zade, i just needed to rant.
I personally wouldn't buy Industrial Annihilation after the forced upgrade deal they tried on steam (Edit: with Planetary Annihilation). Nothing like a paid patch in order to continue to receive updates.
Are any of these StarCraft style RTS games other than Zerospace? I played StarCraft 2 for probably 20,000 hours, getting Master rank with Terran was probably my proudest video game achievement, and I replay the campaign once every year or so. I'm so sad that Stormgate looks like it is just going to be more soulless live service slop, especially considering how great StarCraft 2 is. I'm starved for a StarCraft style RTS that is made by people that really love the genre and that specific style of RTS, but also want to inject some new ideas and ways to have fun into the game.
i kinda like beyond all reason but theres alot of work they need to do for 1 thing the sound design isnt that good there are no unit move sounds or no unit vioceovers i feel supcom is still better

Personally I would love it to be mentioned in the video if the game is Singleplayer only. Other than that I agree with your comment
I can only agree :) some sort of grouping would also be great i.e. starting with all the C&C clones for a better overview

Isn't that what Sins of a Solar Empire 2 is? Or even Sins 1 for that matter.
