My moms family is from lincolnwood, north of Chicago. She has some funny words. My dad is from Minnesota so i have a mix between the two accents. People think im Canadian
I grew up speaking AAVE (here, the “black accent”) and general midwestern, and didn’t really realize my mom and her side of the family spoke with a Chicagoan accent. I only noticed once I moved out to Cali and visited where some friends would say my mom, grandma, uncle, and cousins would speak “weird.” Only then did I listen, and noticed that they did-it’s just that they wouldn’t emphasize certain words like “the” in “da bears” like the SNL super fans. My general midwestern accent picked up the articulation of some of the words here and there (e.g., for “pop,” “ma,” and “Chicago”) but I’m not exactly sure why I didn’t pick up the entire thing. Probably because that’s not how ppl spoke at school. Anyways, sometimes I play around and go into the full Chicago accent for fun just to mess with ppl. As the content creator says, black ppl from Chicago don’t speak like that so it’s good for a laugh. I don’t really know the reason for it, but his general explanation sounds plausible from what I’ve read about the development of the real estate market and neighborhoods in Chicago (which has a very eye-opening history, and is interesting even before the demographic influxes to the city. Chicago’s role in the development of rail and real estate speculation is worth a casual read. Crazy to think that a mixed French Canadian founded the city).
Never heard "wear the jacket." "Gym shoes" were the cheap black & white ones, like Keds, or P F Flyers. For a movie you go to "The Show," and play in the "Prairie"---any open lot or field. Daley knew how to pronounce the name of his town. (He'd cry or have a stroke , if he saw what happened to his beloved city).
There's a huge pronunciation difference between Chicago (as in 'cheap') versus Chicago (as in 'ship') on another level. I feel our language has become lazy.

I always used :gym shoes" and it stands out and sounds so strange even to me on the east coast.
